Otros Rocks June 15, 2006 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
First, a caveat. I'm not a music review expert nor connoisseur (although I'm proud I was able to spell the word) - a very lay music listener so to speak. However, with that said I'm quite confident with giving this album the highest rating. It is similar in some ways to the Gotan Project--but even better. The beats and sysnthesis of old tango music with modern techno and are unique and to be cherished. The Gardel songs and referenes (particularly the line "gracias gardel" in Milonga) are soooo freaking cool--particularly the scratchy sounding vinyl sounds. Like most albums, a few songs are stronger than others with my favorites being Milonga, Sin Rumbo, and De Puro (a very haunting, deep song in both English and Spanish). In short, I was and remain very moved by this album - it is both uplifting, reflective, and truly a modern day classic. I'm not sure the tango "purists" will jump on board with this stuff - but it sure does the trick for me. Also of interest is that this album is "muy caliente" in Buenos Aires right now. I just returned from a BA trip and it is being played as the feature album at almost every music store. Enjoy. Gracias Otros y Gardel.
Great album July 8, 2006 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I was drawn to Otros Aires after hearing their version of "Milonga Sentimental", not realizing initially its connection to the classic sung by Carlos Gardel in 1933. This song alone is worth the cost of the album, but the album exceeded my curiosity and expectations. Every track mixes old tango recordings from between 1918 and 1936, mostly of Carlos Gardel, with modern electronic samplings, instrumentals and lyrics. The results are refreshing and upbeat, in sharp contrast to the darkness and melancholy of Narcotango. And throughout, one feels the artists' reverence and respect for Gardel and the old tango era.
Otros Aires March 30, 2007 The music is very good, brings a new updated kick to Tango music.
Great Tango CD January 8, 2008 This CD was given to me by my dance instructor to pick a song for a Tango routine. For the past four months this CD has been constantly playing in my car. I love the mixture of old and new in this CD. It's one of those great albums that gets better everytime you hear the music. A must have for any collection!
I love finding new music April 26, 2008 I heard this music on a miami milonga site and was instantly intrigued. They advertised the the name of the band, so I went to Amazon to find some of their other stuff and WOW! I'm looking forward to ordering some of their more recent recordings. The music simply makes me smile when I listen to it...
