Nice collection, but no exception January 19, 2000 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
This CD contains a nice variety of music, some of which is not recorded very often (Nos. 3, 4, 9, 14). The singing overall is pretty good considering the size of the ensemble (200 voices--none of these works were intended for a choir of this size! ). The diction is good, but the tempi are sometimes too slow and rhythmic (which is uncharacteristic of Russian Church Music). The soloists, unfortunately, need help. The liner notes, despite their brevity, are very good and informative.
Lack of Spirit & Recording August 25, 2007 Millennium was recorded at the National Cathedra in Washington D.C. by the The Cathedral Choral Society on May 1988 to celebrate the 1000 year Christian Orthodox Baptism of Rus (what is now Kiev Ukraine). The song list is good & the choir sings in tune, but something is missing. Reading the review before, he is correct; too large of choir. I also believe the choir lacks emotional or spiritual appeal because the music doesn't move you like other Russian chant CD's do. Maybe the group sounds too English or lacks the Russian style? The recording is fair because it doesn't sound like your in a Cathedral & it's not as clear as other recordings. See my other reviews on Russian chant.
Great idea but missing the mark both in style & recording.
