Editorial Reviews:

It's impossible to hear Andrea Bocelli singing Perry Como's "It's Impossible" without being overcome by a sense of utter enchantment. As the ripe-hearted have known since 1997's Romanza, though, Bocelli's French-perfume-like appeal generally lingers well beyond a single song, suffusing entire lovestruck evenings with its richness and warmth. And so it goes with Under the Desert Sky. Recorded at a floating concert venue near Las Vegas (thus the title), Bocelli's first CD/DVD combo plays like an elaborate seduction. Cue up the DVD, and the crossover classical tenor, outfitted in black velvet, tortures the besotted with visible sincerity and knockout performances alongside David Foster and the elegant Heather Headley. Spin the CD and the songs come spilling out like elegant reminders of the swoon-worthy live performance. Several of the nine songs on the CD--"Cuando Me Enamoro," "Canzoni Stonate," and "Somos Novios (It's Impossible)" among them--are available on other Bocelli discs, but that shouldn't deter the faithful. For one thing, "Can't Help Falling in Love," a dazzling duet with American Idol's Katherine McPhee, can't be heard elsewhere. For another, outside of a few vintage Julio Iglesias albums, you just won't find this much feeling packed into a single 33-minute disc. It's impossible. --Tammy La Gorce

Album Description
UNDER THE DESERT SKY: a spectacular new CD/DVD combo package from Andrea Bocelli, featuring his first ever live pop concert performance. Performed on a specially constructed floating stage in Lake Las Vegas, a resort community 20 miles south of Las Vegas, this historic performance captures Andrea Bocelli's first ever pop concert. Under the Desert Sky, which co-stars Tony winner Heather Headley (Elton John's Aida), represents a new era for the Tuscan-born singer. Spanish guitars flourish, traditional Latin percussion seductively keeps the tempo, accordions and harmonicas provide haunting ambience. Highlights include "Somos Novios" - Perry Como had a hit with it as "It's Impossible" - and "The Prayer," a duet with Heather Headley, David Foster and Carole Bayer Sager's Oscar nominated song from Quest for Camelot. Capping the program is a new song, "Because We Believe," by David Foster with lyrics by Andrea Bocelli and Amy Foster Gillies which was written for and introduced at the 2006 Torino Winter Olympics.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful MUST HAVE DVD/CD Set.   November 12, 2006

A voice like Andrea Bocelli's only comes along every generation or so, (if that) Caruso, Lanza, Pavarotti and Now Bocelli; They are my big 4. Not only does Bocelli have wonderful opera skills, but also tremendous pop singing skills, as well. As for classical singing; Bocelli's breath control is amazing; no one holds high, mid, and low notes (sang either intensely or softly) as long as Bocelli does. His diction is excellent; His tone is wonderful; His color is right in sink to the song being performed, dark or light, and all shads around those as needed. He has that tenor ring that can rise up over an orchestra, he sings just beautifully. As for his pop singing again it's spectacular; Bocelli can sing a pop song either in a classical way, or a bluesy way or almost anyway. He has tremendous versatility, I would rank him right at the top of pop singing for all time. Bocelli can sing big, bold, intense and beautiful, or can show us a soft side it seems like he is singing in one's ear, very sweetly and beautiful.

Under The Desert Sky: Is a wonderful DVD/CD Set, . Bocelli's singing hear is Romantic, Passionate, filled with Emotion and his voice will go right into your soul and provide you with delight. Bocelli has a certain vulnerability (for lake of a better word) in his voice (when he sings pop) that can fill you with peace. He is just amazing. the DVD is wonderfully done in a beautiful setting of Lake Las Vegas in Henderson, Nevada. You will watch it over and over again. The CD is a nice bonus, it gives you songs not on the Amore cd.

hear is my song by song review.

3 out of 5 stars Longing for the original   November 29, 2006

When I first heard him sing, it was 1998 and I was moved to tears. Since then it feels like someone got hold of his career and packaged him up for the biggest mass market possible - pop music that barely displays his range and depth. It sounds like he's phoning it in ... Elvis Presley redux? I hope I'm wrong, and that this is what Mr. Bocelli has chosen for himself and if that's the case then more power to him.

4 out of 5 stars Disappointing   December 21, 2006

(Typo on the number of stars. I wanted to give it 1 star.)

Like other reviewers, I've followed Andrea Bocelli's career for a while now and have amassed a collection of his CDs. This one, in my humble opinion, is the worst one yet. The problem isn't with Andrea, rather, I suspect his handlers and agents are steering him towards more mainstream, and ultimately, English songs that highlight Andrea's shortcomings and bury his amazing talents.

I am truly shocked to even be typing this. When I compare this CD to his earlier works such as Sentimento (2003) or even Sogno (1999), it doesn't come close -- at least to my ears. Even his Arias CD is better than this one.

The CD/DVD set is nice and will probably appeal to a different set of ears -- but to this classical fan, the choice of music and lack of emotion spoiled the evening.

The one positive note is Besame Mucho -- which captivated me for 3 minutes and 58 seconds.

1 out of 5 stars WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT Don't waste your money!   December 23, 2006

The other reviewers have it right - the marvelous talent of Andrea Bocelli is being ruined by his handlers. This CD is boring, boring, boring. For some reason, Bocelli in English is just not as compelling....he sounds like a high-school kid reciting phoenetically from a cheat-sheet.

And Catherine McPhee? Give me a break! If I want to listen to the over-marketed screaming of a talent-show runner-up, I'd tune in to the lowbrow American Idol. When I buy Bocelli, I expect to hear Bocelli. If he insists on a duet, at least choose someone of his caliber.

I'm glad this was a gift, so I didn't waste any money on it. I'll be "re-gifting" it. Andrea, you've disappointed legions of fans.

It doesn't get any better, the voice, the music or the romance. Try listening to Cuando me Enamoro just once. Can't be done.
