5 out of 5 stars IF you like your music hard - This is THE cd to own   November 3, 2000
10 out of 10 found this review helpful

Sure, there are heavier bands out there, but STP, really kicks it hard with this amazing debut. The world of music owes alot to the talent of Scott Weiland and the boys.. (call then posers if you dare..the sheer amount of album sales of CORE would prove otherwise) - I would dare say that anyone with a love for the "grunge" sound, could not appreciate the sonic intensity at which this music personifies. Go beyond, the wall of sound demonstrated at the onset on Dead and Bloated (evokes Sabbath rifts) Sex Type Thing and Wicked Garden, and get to the heart of the musicianship demonstrated on NO Memory as the lead in to Sin. - The heavy plays out in perfect contrast to the heady - introspective sounds of Creep "I'm half the man I used to be" and Plush (an unforgettable rock anthem that gets better with each listen. Just to get you set up for the other rockers on the cd Piece of Pie and Crackerman and the masterful closer - Where the River Goes (next to Plush, my other personal fave).

- There are other excellent STP albums out there, and I can't quite place my love for this one over Purple, but CORE is the one that will stand the test of time. A masterpiece of angst at it introspective best.

An already distinctive title remixed in surround sound goodness. Although I don't have a player or system capable of advanced resolution playback, the AC-3 format is good enough until I upgrade my system. Included is the video for "Plush" in regular stereo. The difference between the two mixes is quite noticeable. Although many purists will argue against the 5.1 format for music, I found it very enjoyable. The vocals and instruments are given more space to breathe and are more distinct, given the expanded sound stage. Also in the mix are some wonderful 3-D panning effects. If you have a dvd-player and at least a dolby digital set-up, you owe it to yourself to at least check out one of these new dvd-audio titles!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent debut   January 17, 2003

Forget grunge...if you like Rock music, you will like this album. STP is a phenomenal band with loads of talent. They've managed to mix jazz and rock together in one unique sound, which is what many people don't realize.

Core has some classic Rockers on it. I can't count the number of times I've heard Plush...but ya know what? I still like it. It's a good song. There's no other way to put it. Creep is a very catchy and emotional acoustic song. Dead and Bloated, Wicked Garden, and Sex Type Thing are all fairly simple songs musically but are still great. I mean...let me just sum this up for you.

Dead and Bloated - Good song
Sex Type Thing - Good song
Wicked Garden - Good song
No Memory - Not something you want to listen to over and over, so lets just call this "Ok"
Sin - Good song
Naked Sunday - Good song
Creep - Good song
Piece of Pie - Good song
Plush - Good song
Wet My Bed - Interesting? Funny? Any way you describe it, definitely not a good song

Crackerman - Good song
Where the River Goes - Good song

So there you have it folks, you have 10 out of 12 songs that should appeal to you on some level. You may like No Memory more than I do, or even Wet My Bed. The bottom line is there are 10 good, solid rock songs on this album. Let me tell you something...I don't own many albums with 10 quality songs on them. That's why this deserves 5 stars and that's why it's a classic.

5 out of 5 stars "I AM smellin like a rose, cause I'm Dead and Bloated!"   March 16, 2005

Sorry, the whole line couldn't fit in that title lol. Here I am reviewing another classic album by Stone Temple Pilots once more! I've been listening to it more lately, and it just might be their best album, but only slightly better than "Purple". With classics like "Plush" & "Wicked Garden", 8 minute epics like "Where the River Goes", and headbangers like "Sex Type Thing", "Crackerman", & "Sin", how could you go wrong?! I dunno! Anyway, here's the SBS analysis... :D

1. Dead & Bloated: Yep. The song mentioned in my review title, and one of the hits. One of the best on the disc! (10/10)

2. Sex Type Thing: Another very huge single. Overrated, IMO, also overplayed, still nothing short of excellence with anti-rape lyrics. (8/10)

3. Wicked Garden: 3 classics in a row!!! Yippie!! Anyway, great message. Proves why Weiland is one of the best vocalists around! (9/10)

4. No Memory: Just a boring little acoustic instrumental leading in to Sin... (N/A/10)

5. Sin: Awesome song with politcal lyrics. Kinda weird though. (9/10)

6. Naked Sunday: VERY weird funk-rock type of song, with some funny vocals from Weiland. Nice solo by Dean DeLeo too. (8/10)

7. Creep: Another classic, sort of a Nirvana-type of song & lyrics. Also see my Thank You review. (10/10)

8. Piece of Pie: Yet ANOTHER classic, but not a hit, lol. Lyrics are a bit weird, still pretty well written. Scott's voice kinda overshadows what he's saying though. (10/10)

9. Plush: C-C-C-C-COMBO REVIVAL! 3 CLASSICS in A Row... AGAIN!!! YAY. Obviously the most known hit here, still the band's biggest hit. Lyrics are kinda funny, again, but I just can't see how anybody couldn't enjoy this song... (10/10 by far)

10. Wet my Bed: Eeeeewwwwww! Leave those words to yourself, Scott! Horrible skit/interlude. Disgusting. Nuff said. (N/A/10)

11. Crackerman: I don't know what else to say, catchy ass song. (9/10)

12. Where the River Goes: NO relation to the Collective Soul song "Where the River Flows". Like a said, a great 8-minute + epic, and a PERFECT closer! Probably the best written lyrics on here.

Overall: Not the best lyrics ever, still, EVERYONE should buy/bootleg it!!! By far STP'S best album, not Tiny Music! Just make sure to skip the god-=awful "Wed My Bed" on here! I bet you will get ear pollution! Lol! Seriously though...

BUY IT.

P.S., Trial and Combat, your review for here was good, but SHORTEN YOUR REVIEWS A BIT, MAN! Not really shouting or anything, but sheesh, you don't need to make your reviews over like 8 paragraphs with a lot of nonsense english dictionary words! Not that I always use informal grammar, but you don't need to put THAT much for everybody!

Peace!

5 out of 5 stars Utterly inspired rock/grunge   July 12, 2005

Brimming with energy, inspiration, and dark pathos, Core is a masterpiece from the era that spawned it. Not only does the album have a unifying feel to it, the songs stand out on their own as utterly listenable and enjoyable.

Sex Type Thing, Plush, Wicked Garden, Dead and Bloated.... the number of stellar tracks on this CD is staggering.

Scott Weiland and his band have created an album that is replayable, engaging, and definetely one of the best albums of the 90s. There's some filler in the later half, but it's surrounded by such amazing gems it really doesn't impact the album.

Grade: A-
