It is good at what it is supposed to be January 10, 2005 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
A bunch of people are upset with this release because it doesn't contain their idea of perfect tracklisting and, as just a casual fan, I can't argue that there could have been a better collection of songs. But just keep in mind that this is not a "Best of" collective, where live and album tracks would be totally appropriate. It's a "Greatest Hits" CD, where they showcase songs that have done well financially or on one chart or another. It's just a way for the record company to milk the band for ever cent their worth. If they put out a CD with songs that most people know, there is a greater likelihood that casual fans, like me, would buy it. It doesn't really matter what the diehard fans want. Either they already have all of the albums and wouldn't need to buy a collection CD, or they are such fans they would buy it no matter what's on it. As a way to keep me from having to buy entire CDs to get the handful of songs that I like, I think it's a great CD.
7 years too many December 29, 2001 5 out of 14 found this review helpful
With this Christmas cash-in greatest hits album Collective Soul prove they have never had any motiviation in songwriting other than to write top 40 pop radio hits. Not to mention that songs like Perfect Day, No More No Less, and Where the River Flows were all conveiniently left off this album so that people truly wanting all the band's hits are also going to have to fork out cash for Blender, Dosage, and the self-titled album. Also, the tracklisting blows, the songs are seemingly just randomly thrown on here, although I suppose if they had put the hits in chronological order it would make it really apparant how the band has continually gotten more overproduced and mainstream with each new release. If you want a good laugh take a hop over to their website and check out the latest pics of the band. As soon as grunge died out the band cut off their hair, dyed it blond and started dressing like Matchbox 20.Oh, and if you can't tell from the audio samples, the two new tracks are some of the worst ever. Play the sample of Energy, its hilarious, especially the turntables at the end, of all things. I wouldn't be surprised if the next piece of garbage these guys turn out has guest rappers all over it or, as if Elton John wasn't bad enough, maybe they'll get Britney Spears to do some guest vocals. Pathetic, because if these guys wanted to they could have put out at least a couple great albums in their career if they would have stuck with the World I Know/Where the River Flow vibe. Instead they never really cared about making good albums, just making money. But hey, whats new, so does almost everyone else.
4 Stars for the Casual "Soul" Fan...2 1/2 for the Rest of Us September 21, 2001 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This CD compiles Collective Soul's 11 biggest hits, and offers 2 new songs (Energy; Next Homecoming--both good tracks actually). For the casual CS fan, this offers a nice package. The set is centered around Collective Soul's peak years: 3 songs from 1995's break-through "Collective Soul" album (The World I Know; Gel; December) and 4 songs from 1997 (Precious Declaration/Listen/Forgiveness from "Disciplined Breakdown" and She Said from the "Scream 2" soundtrack). The set is mercifully short on last year's "Blender" album (only Why Pt 2).For those of use who already have all the albums, this collection is superfluous and somewhat confounding (some radio hits/key album tracks are missing, including Smashing Young Man, Breathe, Simple). I've said it before and I'll say it again: at this point, the band would have been better served with releasing a live CD, as its energy at concerts is amazing. (Ed Roland, are you listening?) Nevertheless, singer/songwriter Ed Roland has built an impressive catalogue of infectuous rock hits, and if you don't have the albums, this compliation is a great starting place. (The good news is that the set isn't entitled "Greatest Hits Volume 1" as that is the surest sign a band is about to break up!)
THIS COLLECTIVE COLLECTION BLOWS October 2, 2001 4 out of 15 found this review helpful
Now before you click "no" on wheater this review was helpful give me a chance to explain. Collective Soul are indeed, without a single doubt my favorite band to emerge from the mid-90's. I love them and have seen them many times. But why a greatest hits collection now in there career? their Blender LP was the best ever made and I truly thought they couldn't get any better than Dosage but they did! Next I ask, Ok, if you were to do a greatest hits collection, why not make it contain all you great hits. True fans will notice such gems as Untitled, Maybe, Where The River Flows, Breathe, Skin, Run, do you see where this is going? are not included. Yeah, the new songs are fantastic, and you have to get them at a hefty price (most fans have all their albums) and all the songs choosen for this collection are greatest hits indeed. But come on...this band is still at their peak! Creatively, continuously and collectively. So in conclusion, this collection kills off everyone now from buying any of Collective Souls studio CD's. All of them are masterpieces, greatest hits in their own right. This is not justice!
I've got the 7even Year Itch September 8, 2004 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
Collective Soul's Greatest Hits CD, 7even Year Itch, is an album I recommend to everyone. It is an album full of energy. The songs are packed full of guitar solos and the lyrics fit well with the music. The album includes classic songs such as, December, Gel, The World I Know, and Run. There are also a few songs that aren't on there other albums that I like as well. Why Pt. 2 is my favorite on the album, mostly because of how well the guitar is played throughout the song. Forgiveness is another great song on the album that isn't on any others and it shows a little softer side of Collective Soul's talent. I believe this album has a variety of songs, from pretty heavy rock songs to mellow-sounding ones. I suggest you check this album out. It is a great album that almost everyone is bound to love.
