5 out of 5 stars Dark and Refined   March 30, 2006

I could go into a long essay about this album, but I won't. I must say that I love every song on this album, some less than others, but I do love all of them.

A great listen, and though some would say that Razorblade Romance is a better album, I'd have to disagree. Deep Shadows and Brilliant Highlights is much more refined and elegant (and underrated, if you ask me), and appealed a lot more to my tastes. I feel HIM brought their best into every song on this album, and they really take you through a range of emotions with the different sounds of each song.

If you're looking for an introduction to this wonderful group, I'd wholeheartedly recommend this album for your first.

This is one of the best album's I've ever heard. However, when I first heard it three years ago I was not expecting it to be such a mellow album. So long as you aren't expecting anything even remotely metal you'll definately dig this release.

3 out of 5 stars This again?   October 10, 2004

Okay, don't get me wrong, I'd give the songs on the album 5 stars, but I'm talking about the record company. First off, there is NOTHING new on this album. Like Universal did with Razorblade Romance, putting the digipack songs on them, they did not do it with Deep Shadows. It's just the old 10 track version, and there isn't even a video extra. I for one would have really liked to have seen at the very least, You Are The One, and In Love In Lonley from the digi on this release. Now, this is a very good album, but as I already have it, it will probably not be comming home with me.

Now for tracks:

Salt In Our Wounds: Weird intro, but it's not bad. Then the actual song is just awsome. Great lyrics on Valo's part, and a really cool guitar solo.

Heartache Every Moment: Cool keyboard intro. Again, awseome lyrics on Valo's part. Linde does a good (but short) solo. The only akward thing about it, is the second verse. It's only about two lines. It doesn't really hurt the song, but it's just a little odd.

Lose You Tonight: Probably the hardest song on the album. It stands out from the rest of the album, and I do believe Valo used some sort of effect on his vocals. Another very nice solo by Linde.

In Joy And Sorrow: Great lyrics. It has song interesting things insturmentally as well. Unlike most of the album, it's more acoustic. And it even involves some strings. The only thing I don't like about it is how it begins. Right from the start, the lyrics begin. It probably would have benefitted from a slight intro.

Pretending: It's a bit hard to describe this one. Wonderful lyrics, and very nice guitar work. But it won't appeal to everyone. I suggest you just listen to it.

Close To The Flame: Probably the softest song on the album. Very melencholic, nice makeout song if your into that. A bit boring guitar wise, but you probably won't think of that while listeing.

Please Don't Let It Go: Similar to Salt In Our Wounds. Very nice chord progression, but not much as far as a solo goes. Cool song, there is a VERY good live version of it on the Solitary Man singles.

Beautiful: One of, if not the best make out song I've ever heard. A real wooier of the ladies this track. The lyrics are a bit repeative, and there is barley any guitar, but nice synth line. There is another version of this song that was originally intended to be on the album, called Beautiful (Third Seal). It's only available on the In Joy And Sorrow single, which is in the Single Collection. Very different, a lot harder.

Don't Close Your Heart: Easily the poppiest track on the album. Somewhat of an annoying intro, but cool keyboard during the chorus. Cool track non the less.

Love You Like I Do: Not much going on as far as lyrics go, but REALLY good insturmental. An extremly melencholic song. One of my favorite songs on the album.

Now, as I mentioned before, the songs on the album get 5 stars. The only reason I gave it a three was becase of the record company. If you into softer HIM, I strongly reccomend this album.

4 out of 5 stars You know, this one isn't so bad.   January 13, 2005

It isn't nearly as cheezy as the Razorblade one or whatever. I can actually tolerate it very well. It's just really hard to get past the image that stores like hot topic place upon them...my philosophy has always been "Buy the album, not the hat" Once you listen to the music, THIS album is pretty good and at least tolerable. That Razorblade one, still sucks.

5 out of 5 stars Best H.I.M. album ever...   May 18, 2005

In my opinion this is the BEST His Infernal Majesty album out there. It's the lightest of all of them, but it has the best songs on it. It includes most of the songs from the movie "Haggard" and has my all time favorite "Beautiful". I recommend that every H.I.M. fan buy this cd. Hope you enjoy it.
