Very Good Album...only one disappointment October 7, 2004 7 out of 10 found this review helpful
Ok, so I have been a nightwish fan for some time now, and I currently own all of their albums. This one mixes both heavy(more then there other albums) with the beauty of tarja's singing. Like others have said, if you have not heard nightwish before, and are a new listener, don't get this album first. I would suggest going with Wishmaster or even Angels Fall First. Back on subject, I enjoy pretty much every song on this album, with the exception of Romanticide. Some songs that stand out are, Dark Chest of Wonders, Nemo, Planet Hell, and Ghost Love Score. I do not know where they were going with Wish I Had An Angel(the whole techno part was a little confusing), but seeing them live makes them even that much better. If you are a fan of Nightwish, I would suggest you pick up this album, and if possible, see them live, cause they are so much better live. Oh yes, my one disappointment. I am disappointed taht the US release was under Road Runner Records, because I dont think they fit in with the whole Nu Metal scene at all. But its ok, because we got the album here, and that is all that matters. Definate Solid 5 for me, along with all of there other cds :D
In America, They Would Be Saying "Grammy". January 3, 2005 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
Were this band American, people would be screaming, "Grammy!" From end to end this is THE BEST CD I HAVE EVER HEARD! The CD opens up with a heavily gothic / Operatic number called "Dark Chest Of Wonders" that will astound you the moment you hear it. Track two, "Wish I Had an Angel" continues this trend with a more intense "Rob Zombie Meets Modern Day Opera" feel. This thing could have been in Van Helsing....
Other tracks of note are "Ghost Love Score", "Kuolema Tekke Taiteilijan", and "Nemo" which is the single that reached the top of UK Charts.
Nightwish is a Powermetal act lead by a Soprano front woman who's talent can be described as unmatched in this industry. Following the band is a full Orchestra produced almost identically to the one on Metallica's "S & M" CD.
American Nu Metal fans will whine, no doubt, that Tarja Turunen sucks because she can actually sing and not scream. If you think Fred Durst is a genius, you should probably look elsewhere...
On a similar note, if you believe for one minute what All-Music Guide Said, "...Following in the footsteps of the Gathering and Lacuna Coil (goth-influenced "symphonic" metal bands with female vocalists)", you have been mis-informed... Nightiwsh has been around MUCH LONGER than Lacuna Coil, and also, contrary to the article, sound NOTHING like Lacuna.
If you like GREAT MUSIC, buy this CD... If you want to try something new, again, BUY THIS CD... However, if you think Nu Metal is innovative, than may I suggest you go worhip Mr. Durst.

A CD that goes from good to better with each listen February 10, 2005 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
This is my second purchase from the amazingly talented group Nightwish. I read the reviews to this CD that stated not to start your Nightwish collection with this CD. I listened and purchased Century Child first. Although that CD is breathtaking in its own right, Once fulfilled the expectations I began to form from reading all the highly rated reviews. From beginning to end this disc takes you on a ride that starts amazing and ends unfathomable. Any expectation somebody could form about this CD will be proven ten fold.
Songs like Nemo and Planet Hell make this a must have. But songs like Ghost Love Score and The Siren make this one of the best albums of the new millenium. This is vaguely reminescent of Century Child but is also a step in a new direction. The album starts off with Dark Chest of Wonders. A power-packed opener filled with angelic vocals and pulse pounding rhythms. Nemo is quite possibly the best song on here. It's a beautiful song that takes you on a ride you'll never want to stop. The only song that surpasses this is Ghost Love Score. This has quickly become my favorite song by Nightwish, the reason being that it contains everything you could ever want in a song. It's got some of the best vocals you'll ever hear and the way the band plays throughout is magnificent. I feel that Romanticide is unfairly judged, I find it to be a standout track on here. With just one listen-through that is the song that caught my ear the most, only with further, more detailed listens, did I find that there are other songs on here that deserve just as much attention than Romanticide. I definitely suggest people give that song more of a chance.
Some of the best tracks on here are Nemo, Planet Hell, Romanticide, Ghost Love Score, and Higher Than Hope. This is one of those CDs that whenever you see it you just want to pop it into the closest CD player and take a trip through heaven. Every song has something about it that gets stuck in your head. But the best thing about this release is Tarja Turunen's voice. Where others opt for hoarse yells she chooses to belt out the notes only Anneke van Giersbergen from The Gathering can contend with. This release definitely deserves your attention.
Something Different; but This Is Something Nice February 23, 2005 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
Nightwish has been around for eight years-with each album their style has changed-this is to be expected. With this album, Nightwish uses an orchestra in many of the tracks-it works out well.
1. Dark Chest of Wonders- They do something wonderful with the guitars. This song is very uplifting, the choir and orchestra are introduced, and, of course, Tarja Turunen is singing in her usual way.
2. Wish I Had An Angel-This song is very interesting to review. First, Marco Hietala sings in this song-personally, I think he has a decent voice. There is also a steady beat in this song, not unlike a techno song you might hear.
3. Nemo-In Europe, this was the first single, and this was a wise choice. This has an excellent chorus and it's also geared towards the radio.
4. Planet Hell- Another song where Marco Hietala sings. I like this song-it's very fast-paced. The lyrics are astounding, and the guitar solo is pleasant, if not rather intimidating, almost, to listen to.
5. Creek Mary's Blood- This song is tricky to review. This song is eight minutes long, and it is like getting a lesson on Native American history-in an interesting way. The song itself is very sad, the instruments give the whole song a gloomy feel, except for the choruses. Those are very lively.
6. The Siren-This is probably my favourite song on this album. It's a very catchy song, with nice violin parts. Definitely reminds me of someplace cool, like the Arctic Circle or something similar.
7. Dead Gardens- This song is rather hard to describe, too. It's based heavily on electronics, but it's still a very good song. The lyrics seemed to have been well written, as well.
8. Romanticide- This is another standout on the album. The guitars are fabulous. The lyrics and the vocals (Marco and Tarja) are absolutely gorgeous. Romanticide was an appropriate title for this song, too.
9. Ghost Love Score-Like many have said-this is like its own soundtrack. Ghost Love Score is an interesting song to listen to-it starts off rather happily, then it turns melancholy, then absolutely dismal, then hopeful, and then happy again. The orchestra and choir were vital to this song-everyone who contributed to this song did an excellent job.
10. Kouleme Tekee Taiteilijan-If you couldn't guess, this song is in Finnish. I don't know what she's saying, but the song is beautiful. It's just Tarja and a cello. It's also kind of fun to look in the CD insert and look at the Finnish words-it's something you should look at sometime.
11. Higher then Hope-This song starts off slow, but it builds up, and the chorus, though still slow, is not soft at all. It's a sad song, almost-'Higher than hope my cure lies.'
12. White Night Fantasy-When you take into consideration the fact that this is a bonus track, you stary to appreciate the song more. Tarja sounds much younger on this song, but then you realise that she's supposed to.
13. Live to Tell the Tale- A faster paced song, definitely nice.
Nightwish is a very good band, all of the members contributed something to this album. Hopefully Nightwish will become a bit more well known-they deserve it.
Thunderous, Epic, Romantic! July 25, 2005 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I first heard of Nightwish on the CD "The Celtic Circle, vol.1" which had their beautiful song "Sleeping Sun." I looked into the band, thinking that they were a Celtic-pop group. How wrong (and pleasantly surprised) I was! I grew up listening to opera, and I must say, I've been waiting a long time to hear something that can correctly synthesize rock and opera. Here it is! This album is powerful: the word EPIC comes to mind. "Dark Chest of Wonders" is a thunderous beginning, and the album doesn't let go. "Wish I had an Angel" is a great song of anger and betrayal, with the dark twist of unfulfilled desires. "Nemo" is a hauntingly beautiful piece about longing for an unfound love. Other highlights include "Creek Mary's Blood," perhaps one of the most moving songs I've heard, about the Navajo Trail of Tears. "Ghost Love Score" pulls out all the stops with a full-on orchestra and chorus, that rips right at the heart. Tarja's voice is incredible, and more than makes up for Marko Hietela's grating male vocals. Tuomas' lyric and songwriting skills are unparalleled: he truly knows how to write music which is in turn haunting, crashing, epic, and gothicly romantic.
