Looking For Great Metal? It's Gone Overseas........ October 25, 2004 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
This is the first Nightwish album I've bought, although I've been somewhat familar with their other stuff for a while now. I've only had it for a little over a week and all I can say is: WOW!!!!! I can't stop playing it, it is just that great! "Once" is epic, symphonic metal like no other, due in large part to Tarja's impressive vocals, (she puts any popular female singer in the US to shame!) although there's no shortage of talent in rest of the band either. The orchestral and choral arrangements are absolutely spectacular and beautiful while not detracting from the good hard edge of the rest of the music. The only tiny weak spots are two songs in the middle, "Dead Gardens" and "Romanticide", possibly making the rating closer to 4.5 stars, but the two bonus tracks more than make up for them. This is the kind of metal we should have on the radio here in the US, instead of most of the stuff you hear-made by idiots who can't play or sing! This is definitely for anyone who likes their music a little more complex and classically/operatically influenced, such as (my favorite) Queensryche, Stratovarius, Symphony X, Royal Hunt, etc.
not bad January 12, 2005 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
On first listen i thought this album was too symphonic. Being a fan of so called gothic bands like "Lacuna Coil" I expected to hear something along those lines. However, Nightwish sounded nothing like that. I first bought "Century Child" by Nightwish and loved it. "Once" is a fairly decent album, it's just alot more symphonic than metal. I wouldn't label this a metal album. If you're into symphonic/progressive dark rock music with beautiful goth lyrics, you just might enjoy this album. Tarja's vocals are extremely breathtaking. She can make even one word have a beautiful melody. There are many lovely track on "Once" "Nemo", "Siren", "Gohst Love Score", and "Higher than Hope" are among my favorites. While the vocals, pianos, and guitars are absolutely lovely, I only had one complaint. The male vocals weren't very good, and were annoying at times. The album could have done without him singing. Anyhow, if you're looking to buy an album with strong melodies accompanied by lots of orchestral background, don't hesitate to buy this album.
NIGHWISH HAS OUTDONE THEMSELVES!!!!!!!!! January 22, 2005 6 out of 9 found this review helpful
This is such an amazing work of art. Like all of the best albums, you don't always know it upon first listen...but it just keeps getting better and better every time it is played.
I've been supporting Nightwish for many years, and this is simply their strongest effort to date. Many songs use a 20-something piece orchestra and you can hear it in throughout the production.
I read that this was the same orchestra that Pip Williams used to record the Lord of the Rings soundtrack!!!
Every song has something special about it. At first listen, I noticed that the music is less keyboard driven this time around and focuses more on the guitar riffs. At first the guitars seemed a bit much, but after a few listens, the mix feels just right. Perhaps more guitar will help Nightwish grow in popularity in the US. It was great to see them on tour in fall 2004!
I cannot express how much I LOVE this album. It provides some of the heaviest and also some of the most ambient moments on a Nightwish CD. There is so much emotion. Be sure to get the US release with 2 bonus tracks and music video! Enjoy!!!
Once won me over April 8, 2005 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I'm not a Nightwish fan. At least, I wasn't until I heard Once. I saw them live at ProgPower in 2003 and had heard a few of their early albums but really wasn't that impressed. The whole opera metal style just didn't do anything for me. Then a buddy told me that their new album was incredible, so I gave it a try. This album just knocked me to the floor. It's so damn...big. I'm no stranger to symphonic metal, but I've never heard anything quite like this.
With the strength of a full orchestra behind them, Nightwish really made the most of their signature style of metal. It's heavy and lush and beautiful at the same time. There are plenty of bands who strive for that "epic" sound, but Nightwish totally nailed it with this album. For proof, check out Ghost Love Score, which is as epic as it gets. Nemo and Creek Mary's Blood are two other favorites from Once.
Once really sets the standard for symphonic metal, and should easily appeal to most metal fans. Those of you who are into bands like Therion, Symphony X, and even My Dying Bride should definitely own this album.
Brilliant October 26, 2005 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
This is one of the few albums of the last few years that really knocked me on my butt, along with Opeth and Nevermore's latest.
I always liked Nightwish, but to be honest, the slightly cheesy keyboards always kept them from really realising their potential. Where they tried to sound epic, they sometimes ended-up sounding a bit too close to Journey. Even with all the modern advancements, keyboards have their limitations when trying to sound like an orchestra. I remember listening to Century child and thinking, "Damn, imagine if they had a real orchestra". Well this time they do, and it makes a huge difference.
What used to sound a bit too poppy to me, now sounded properly epic and dark. "Once" sounds much more like the epic vampire movie soundtrack they've been trying to make, and that's a good thing. Picture the Lord Of The Rings soundtrack with Hetfield on Guitar. The guitars are chunkier and heavier as well. This is my absolute favourite, and I really hope they stay this course.
