As good as we'd hoped for! December 22, 2006 11 out of 15 found this review helpful
Months after American Idol has finished I still fail to comprehend how this guy didn't win the competition. He was head-and-shoulders above anyone on the show and has gone on to release a fantastic debut album. I'm a postman living in the UK (South Wales) and put "Daughtry" onto my MP3 player this morning as I did my round. It was minus 2 and foggy as hell but who cares when you've got Daughtry singing for his life blasting through my headphones! Maybe 1 or 2 songs I don't care so much for,but (for a debut album) it's everything we'd hoped for and more.
Nothing New January 4, 2007 11 out of 23 found this review helpful
I was impressed when Daughtry didn't jump at the chance to front Fuel, choosing to stay the course and do his own thing. But his own thing sounds like a watered down Nickleback. There are a couple of radio friendly songs that are easy to listen to because they sound like you have heard them a thousand times already. Not once does this album "Rock" like many of the previous reviews mention. The album is mid-tempo throughout and never comes alive. The guy has a good voice which we all knew anyway... but he doesn't have any writing talent. He should have hooked up with Fuel just to learn how to craft song writing.
Obviously the album will sell because he has so many fans from being on TV, but there will be no staying power with more dribble like this. Hope he socks away the money he is making now.
The heart of rock and roll returns November 21, 2006 10 out of 14 found this review helpful
Let me first say that most of today's " modern rock " leaves me pretty chilly. So many flavor of the month bands that are more about image then substance. I was hopeful that DAUGHTRY, the new band by Chris Daughtry of American Idol infamy ( perhaps the most talked about vote off in the shows history - Constantine of Idol 4 is close, but Chris was the odds on favorite for this past 5th installment ) would finally be a CD worth my time and money. I have watched all 5 seasons but never pulled the trigger as far as buying " product ".
From the first time Chris opened that golden throat I'm sure the little hairs on the back of millions of Americans necks stood on end. Here was a guy who sang from deep down. He didn't oversell with theatrics, and Simon thought he was perhaps too boring even though the voice was undeniable. But he got on the show, a memorable moment as his wife, hugged him with the force of ten hugs. Chris devoted his life to his family, helping to raise his wife's children, a sacrifice that many musicians neglect. Having a steady day job just isn't cool if you play rock and roll. But talent like this should be shared with the world and his wife understood. That's why she was so happy for him, after all he did for them ( he adopted her kids ), he was going to get his big break.
Chris ended up in 4th place, the prize in sight and then suddenly gone. The host Ryan Seacrest springing the dismissal in a lightning quick jolt, that actually seemed to floor Daughtry. He made the talk show circuit and seemed in shock. He then was offered a job to front the band Fuel. The band heard his rendition of their hit song, Hemorrhage and became a fan. But Chris decided he was going to do his own thing, and I think he just might have made a great choice.
Sorry for the set up, but for some who didn't fully watch the show I thought I would give some back story. I think he will have many new fans who might be coming to this sight. Oh, for those who have not watched the show the fans get a bit intense. Guilty as charged. You might see some 1 star ratings. Some fans whose favorite was perhaps overshadowed by Chris and his dramatic exit, might, out of spite, write some obvious tainted reviews. Just a heads up.
So, as for the record. I won't go song by song. I will just say this CD is a solid, superb and stunning debut. I first heard it on VH1 all the way through. The samples on myspace were promising and the single, It's Not Over is so catchy, powerful and professional sounding that I felt no way the entire CD could be as strong. I was wrong. There is also a great flow to the CD. It never gets to heavy or too sappy. Sure, there are a couple more tender rock ballads, but he's just not going through the motions. Home in particular, a song he wrote on his own ( all but two songs have the Daughtry personal touch ), is a real standout. His fans are dedicating that song to the troops in the middle east. He found out about this a recent concert for the media types. He was truly touched according to a fan who posts on the Idol forum.
Anyway, I never once was tempted to skip a song. Yes, Chris will be compared to many of todays lead singers, but he stands out because of his HEART. Chris appears to be a spiritual person and it shines through on this record. I am not even Christian...I'm a nice Jewish boy...but so was Jesus...anyway, he did some Christian rock, that's very good. His old band Absent Element has spiritual roots. I was thrilled that one of the songs, Breakdown, was a combination of a couple AE songs. Conviction in particular is one of the songs that showed me this guy has real depth. The man sings from his soul. He reminds me more of Paul Rogers of Bad Company in how he delivers a lyric then the other " modern " rockers that all blend into one for me. Yes, I'm in my mid 40's. I really feel this CD will appeal to the old and young, and both genders will find it appealing. I have to say Slash sounds great and I wonder if he was thinking, dang, why didn't he apply for my band Velvet Revolver!!
Bottom line, if you are a fan of Chris Daughtry you will be thrilled. If you are just finding out about Chris...shaking head... and you like Rock and Roll, but long for music that has integrity and most important HEART, then prepare to be happy.
Perfect November 21, 2006 10 out of 13 found this review helpful
Daughtry is a perfect CD, with every single song having amazing hit potential. This is the only CD in my collection of 200+ where there isn't at least one song I want to skip. It covers all the bases - catchy top 40 rock, hard rock, and rock ballads. I'm very picky when it comes to rock music, but I love all 12 songs. I've allowed friends and coworkers to listen, and they're impressed. If you're on the fence, wondering whether or not to buy it, I can assure you this is one CD you'll love. I'd rate it a 10/5 if I could, but as it stands, this is a SOLID 5 stars!
Words Can't Even Describe... November 21, 2006 10 out of 14 found this review helpful
Chris my man you've done it again..I just absolutely love ya! The Cd is phenomonal. He is the reason why I loved watching American Idol, screw all of those people on that show, this cd will blow them all out of the water!! Even though I myself am not a rock fan he MAKES me love it. He has his own style and vocals that just blow me away. Like someone else mentions, for once this a cd that I can just kick back and relax to instead of worrying about flipping to the next "cool" song. Keep up all the hard work, you're doing a fantastic job. ROCK ON!! =)
