Over Produced... May 21, 2008 2 out of 6 found this review helpful
Having seen Jason Mraz several times live, it's disheartening to hear most of his albums sounding so...produced. So much horn and extra rhythm sections...extra jazz guitar parts, etc. His 4 song EP released months ago ("We Sing")was the quintessential soul of those songs. Only 2 people should be on stage, as well as in the recording booth...and that's Mraz and Toca Rivera.
"Live at Java Joe's," "Selection for Friends," and "We Sing" capture Mraz's vocal range, creativity, and stage presence. His major releases are overly produced, creating clutter around great songs. Who knew "Did you get my message" was such a great song, until you heard the live version on "Selection for friends?"
Another excellent Mrazish experience June 13, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have loved Jason Mraz since he began and he has never failed to please. This album is similar to Waiting for My Rocket To Come (in my view) and not quite as peppy as Mr. A-Z. I love his fast, wordy, intelligent songs. (I still have Geek in the Pink as my ringer on my phone). This album seemed a bit slower paced, but I love his voice and his jazzy twang. I never liked scat until I heard Jason do it.
He has a skill with words beyond any artist I have ever heard. Read his journal on his website and you will be amazed. I think he is one of those unassuming but highly intelligent people.
We Sing is an album I could put on while reading or entertaining guests. Not too overpowering, but not total background music either. I need to listen to it a few more times to really get the "feel" for it, but I had to do that with WFMRTC as well, and now I love every track except the last two.
I saw Jason perform at the PF Chang's Rock N Roll Marathon in Tempe, AZ just before he put out Mr A-Z and he performed a few of his new ones (though we didn't know that's what they were yet!) and he was absolutely the most entertaining concert I have ever been to. Anyone who has a chance to go see him live should! He broke into opera at our concert, like he does in one of his tracks on Mr A-Z (Mr. Curiosity, I believe - just in case you didn't think that was him -it is! I saw him do it with my own two eyes!)
I always wait in anticipation for anything new from Jason, and this album did not fail to please. Also, anyone who can get his Live from the Eagles Ballroom DVD and CD set should- it is wonderful. He does a great song called "Not So Usual" which has become my personal theme song.
Everyone, buy this album and support this unique and engaging artist!
Disappointing June 13, 2008 2 out of 10 found this review helpful
This cd to me was a disappointment! I was led to believe that cd would bring new styles and sounds to his audience, but it pretty much sounds the same as his previous albums. Don't get me wrong, his style is unique and he is great at it, however, I didn't like this album. Maybe for him this album is aesthetically the best he has done so far, perhaps because of personal journeys/growth, etc....but I didn't feel it. As a woman, I felt that some of his lyrics made women out to be objects of pleasure...very sensual inflections in his writing and music. He has the right to express whatever he feels/went through, and I'm not a feminist or anything, but to me it didn't cut it. His last albums were just plain fun and quirky, and this one wasn't.
Mraz is new to me......What a great talent June 13, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Over the years my musical interests have changed. I once was a country fan, then metal & hardrock, but as I've gotten a little older I have started to gravitate toward more melodic music. I was listening to the radio and heard "I'm Yours" and was blown away. Being a guy with a romantic streak in me this song's hopeful, uplifting look at love really raises my spirits. The song also has just a great melody and catchyness to it that will rattle around in your head for hours.
That's the song that hooked me, but "Lucky" with Colbie Caillat was the one that reeled me in. Two great voices singing a great song, that will remind many people of their feelings for their lover/spouse. "If it Kills me" rounds out the trio of romantic songs.
"Butterfly", well, the title is nodoubt a reference to an anatomical female feature. So, as you can imagine this is very sentual song. Sentual not pornograhic in nature. "Butterfly" has a definite R&B/Funk flavor to it that makes you want to dance. I've seen people mention that his song in particular objectifies females but I think it is largely done in very good taste.
The rest of the CD is filled out with songs about divorce, lost love, over analysis, and being fallible.
Great CD overall, one of the best I heard in years.
Wonderful mix of uplifting and slow and melodic July 1, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is my third Jason Marz album and he just keeps getting better and growing more in his musical style. Some of the outstanding numbers are "Details in the Fabric" and "Lucky" along with the radio playing "I'm Yours."
This album goes from slow melodic tunes, to almost boppy jazzy tunes of the 30's and back to our modern days. I love his range of styles.
Enjoy it yourself.
