Brenden or Jack White? March 27, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
When I first heard the opening riffs of "Consolers to the Lonely", I thought, "definitely a Jack White (or White Stripes with a full band) record." While this is definitely not a bad thing, I was not necessarily looking forward to another Stripes record. I'd probably consider myself more of a Brenden Benson fan, and since there's not lots of him out there, I want every bit that I can get. As a fan of either, or both, you will not be disappointed. It may not be immediately evident, but the record is a White Stripes record with the pop grandeur of Brendon Benson (circa The Alternative to Love, maybe One Mississippi), combining both in the best possible way. A true collaboration, with artists this talented (including Patrick Keeler and Jack Lawrence, of course), we are very lucky. No track to track run down, if you are a fan of any or all, get it, give it some time if you need it, you will not be disappointed.
Decent, but not great March 27, 2008 4 out of 11 found this review helpful
I'll start off by saying I'm a huge White Stripes fan and an even bigger Greenhornes fan. I think the Greenhornes trump all of the garage rock bands from the recent years. Not a huge Benson fan but he's okay. Anyway, the new Raconteurs album is decent but it's not great. It's far more ambitious and layered than Broken Boy Soldiers. They definitely sound like a more polished band and the weight of the sound seems to be more reliant on Jack White than Benson this time around, which is good or bad depending on your views. The only problem is the songs just aren't that good. I've listened to this all the way through probably around 15 times now and it just isn't growing on me. The only tracks that really strike me as outstanding are Consoler of the Lonely, Salute Your Solution and Carolina Drama. There are several okay songs: The Switch and the Spur, Five on the Five and Attention. But the rest just don't do it for me. Overall Broken Boy Soldiers is more pop and easier to listen to but Consolers is more ambitious and creative - it just isn't that good.
creative and interesting March 28, 2008 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
So many albums these days fall into the "nostalgia rock" category, and this new one by the Raconteurs is no exception, but they are much better at it than average, and they throw in enough creativity and originality to make them seem far more than another ACDC cover band. Sometimes Jack White sound more like Jack Black imitating his 70's heroes in a movie, but that's ok. It's a fun album.
Classic.....a Masterpiece April 7, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Harder than Broken Boy Soldiers and just as awesome! This album ROCKS!! After listening to it's entirely a few times it will get you and after that nothing compares to it. As usual, Jack White's the man as far as I'm concerned.
Out of Nowhere!!!! April 25, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Who would ever thought a new Racontuers album would have come out so quickly. So glad it did and enjoyed this one greatly. As a big fan of The White Stripes as well, looked forward to this one. With Consoler of The Lonely,You Don't Understand Me,Many Shades of Black,Five on The Five and Attention highlighting this strong album from start to finish. If you like The White Stripes,The Racontuers and Jack White for that matter,go get this one now.It won't disapoint at all.You will love it. It does have some different sounds, which I love. I always like to see groups grow and not stay with the same formula.Even though The Racontuers only had one other album. We can get spoiled by these fast releases.Next week maybe we'll have a new White Sripes.LOL!!!!! Anyway, check this one out .It will amaze!!!! A solid 4.7 for strong rock record!!!!!
