4 out of 5 stars It's missing songs, but...   June 3, 2001

I just saw Moulin Rouge yesterday, and after anticipating it for weeks, it went beyond my expectations. It's loaded with humor and great music.

My favorites are:"Because we can" which is exciting, full of action, and hyper--makes you want to dance. "Elephant Love Medley" is a combo of TEN songs, from Joh Lennon's "All You need is love" to "I will always love you." I love the climax with "I will always love you" and the opera singer harmonizing in the back. Very passionate. "Come What May" also has that passion, but it's the main love song. It starts off with Ewan singing kinda softly (he has a great voice) and Kidman joins, and then it builds. "El Tango de Roxanne" has the pimp singing in his really low, hoarse, rumbling voice, which really goes well with Ewan's smoother, higher harmony when they sing together towards the end. "Hindi Sad Diamonds" is the other heart-pumping, fast-paced, makes-you-wanna dance song, and like its name suggests, it has an Indian influence in its techno-like sound.

The other songs are fine, "Nature Boy" has a nice moodiness, but I didn't think the remix at the end was that great or that different from the first track. "Lady Marmalade" is SO OVER-PLAYED on the radios! Personally, I never liked the original song, so basically, I don't care for the melody. The only reason I like to listen to it is because of all the fancy vocalizations. Is it just me or does Aguilera seem like she's trying to dominate the whole song? Yes, she has a more loud, powerful, higher vocal range, but at the end, when they name each singer and each singer does a little solo, why, for example does Pink just get "uh uh uh" like grunting? But the variety of vocal styles work together.

"Complainte de la butte" is a cute little French croon. "Sparkling Diamonds" is entertaining. "Diamond Dogs" is fine. I don't care much for "Children of the Revolution" and "Rhythm of the Night" (for some reason, the latter, whenever I hear it, I kept help but hear Gloria Estefan singing it, which ruins the experience...if you don't hear it, it's a good song then...unless of course, you like Estefan).

Both Ewan and Kidman have their own solo songs, Ewan's "Your Song" is strong. His voice carries it very well. Kidman's "One Day I'll Fly Away" is a bit weaker, not because of her voice, but the melody itself...whenever she does the chorus, "One Day I'll Fly Away" and the line after that...it doesn't sound right, because it strongly reminds me of a melody that started out the same way but afterwards, different.

Overall, I like all the songs, meaning, I could listen to the CD from beginning to end without skipping tracks. The only major thing that I'm disappointed in is that it's missing songs like "Like a Virgin" with the Duke and the pimp singing it (really really funny scene!), "The hills are alive with music" with dialogue, and the song when the Bohemians, Christian, Satine, and the pimp are promoting "Spectacular Spectacular" to the Duke.

Moulin Rouge

This is an awesome cd, and I THANK Baz Luhrman for doing it and the movie. Although I have yet to see the movie, I'm anxiously wanting to.

1. Nature Boy . David Bowie - The soundtrack begins with a small haunting piece of dialogue given by Ewan MecGregor, while in the background are haunting tunes. Then David Bowie begins to sing, and the background becomes stronger. It's an awesome, haunting song, and is no doubt used in the movie in a great way.

2. Lady Marmalade . Christina, Pink, Mya, Lil' Kim - I cannot express how much I love this song. The collaboration of these beautiful ladies' voices is wonderful, and not to mention very sexy. From Mya's soft, innocent voice to Christina's loud and perfect vocals, Lady Marmalade delivers each and every music taste you could hope for. Pink has a strong and worthy voice, and Lil' Kim gives us a bit of her rapping. Again, the collaboration of these sexy ladies was the only way to go with this song.

3. Because We Can . Fatboy Slim - What do we always expect from master DJ Fatboy Slim? A fast, fun song that never slows down, and if it does, it's only to build up a great explosion in the song which gives you chills. Although the only lyrics consists of the words, Because We Can, everybody, and happy, the rhythmic beats keep the song way alive.

4. Sparkling Diamonds . Nicole Kidman - This song was the first time I ever heard Kidman sing, and I must say, I was surprised at well this lady can sing! She can go from being sexy to having a loud, strong voice. And all the time sounds like she's enjoying singing what she's singing. The song in itself is very fun, and full of girl power. It mixes songs from great legends as Marilyn Monroe and Madonna, and does it well.

5. Rhythm of the Night . Valeria - I want to hear more from this girl! She sounds like a new Gloria Estifan. The Latin beats of Rhythm of the Night will keep you moving throughout the whole song.

6. Your Song . Ewan McGregor and Alessandro Safina - The soundtrack finally slows down after the previous fast beats with this ballad sang with great ease by McGregor. The operatic backgrounds supplied by Alessandro Safina go great with the song, and makes the song more powerful. The orchestra also gives the song a great feeling.

7. Children of the Revolution . Bono, Gavin Friday and Maurice Seezer - Now we go from orchestric ballad to a hard rock song led by the great voices known for their rock. Children of the Revolution will make anyone go for something their willing to do. It's like a victory song, of sorts.

8. One Day I'll Fly Away . Nicole Kidman - Nicole shows us her sweeter, softer side in One Day I'll Fly Away. The song is soft on the ears, and so is Nicole's voice. I never could've imagined how good she can sing.

9. Diamond Dogs . Beck - I've never been a big fan of Beck's music, but Diamond Dogs is better than most of it.

10. Elephant Love Medley . Nicole Kidman, Ewan McGregor and Jamie Allen - I love this! It combines many great love songs from the past decade into a wonderful medley supplied by Nicole and Ewan's voices. These two have great talent. And neared to the end, the background is full of, I guess, Jamie Allen's operatic vocals, with Nicole and Ewan harmonizing together. It's wonderful.

11. Come What May . Nicole Kidman, Ewan McGregor- Another song with Nicole and Ewan. Although it doesn't live up to Elephant Love Medley, it's still great. It's more of a ballad here, and really shines.

12. El Tango de Roxanne . Ewan McGregor, Jose Feliciano and Jacek Koman - I can't wait to see how this song is done in the movie. Ewan really shows off his vocal skills here, and the tune to El Tango de Roxanne is great.

13. Complainte de la Butte . Rufus Wainright - A very soft, happy like song. The beginning of the song is sung in French, I believe. And the accent of Rufus Wainright is great.

14. Hindi Sad Diamonds . Nicole Kidman, John Leguizamo, and Alka Yagnik - This is one wild song! The beats are right out of India, and Nicole Kidman's voice is used superbly! It's a fast and wild song.

15. Nature Boy . David Bowie and Massive Attack - This is a remix of the first track, and is done to the tune of a more hard rock song than the first haunting tunes.

Moulin Rouge marks itself as one of my favorite CDs, and will probably do the same to any fan of musicals, Nicole Kidman, or any music lover.

4 out of 5 stars AMAZING movie - but what happened to half the songs?   June 12, 2001

I loved Moulin Rouge. The movie was a cinematic masterpiece as far as I'm concerned. I loved every moment and every song -- which is why I must admit to being somewhat disappointed with the CD. There were so many wonderful music moments left off of this recording, not to mention that this isn't truly the soundtrack to the movie since the artists on here in several cases never actually sing in the movie (the extremely popular version of Lady Marmalade doesn't appear in the movie at all). Although I liked the song, how did the producers of this CD justify Bono's "Children of the Revolution" which appears for literally 10 seconds and then leave off "The Sound of Music," "The CanCan," "Like a Virgin," and "The Show Must Go On" -- all significant moments in the movie. What IS on this CD, though, is great. "I'll Fly Away," "The Elephant Love Medley," "Come What May" and "Your Song" are especially beautiful. A Moulin Rouge Vol. 2 is a necessity. It's a shame they couldn't get it right the first time around.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing pop version of a fantastic soundtrack   June 21, 2001

I thought Moulin Rouge was a fantastic film, in large part because of its very inventive soundtrack. Unfortunately, much of the brilliance of that soundtrack is burried under pop renditions which diminish the character of the original motion picture versions. The tracks which most closely preserve the original presentation ("Because We Can," "Your Song," "Elephant Love Medley," "El Tango De Roxanne," and "Hindi Sad Diamonds") also inherit the movie's emotion and power. I wish the rest of the disc were as true to the original.

I've had my cd for over 3 months now and I do love what music from the movie they decided to put in there, but like many others I'm disappointed there wasn't more. I too have been looking (for THREE months) for a second (more songs from Moulin Rouge) soundtrack to come out. I was hoping there would be the "lady marmalade" remix that they played in the movie. (it's much more tolerant than the original) I'm also disappointed that the soundtrack version of "Come What May" wasn't even ONE of the film versions. In all actuallity I was hoping they'd have both film versions on the CD. (I love the version @ the end of the movie) I was also looking for the remakes of "Like A Virgin," and "The Show Must Go On." One other one that I enjoyed a lot that wasn't on the soundtrack was the "Spectacular Spectacular" song. In all honesty I believe they wasted their money putting Beck, Fatboy Slim, Valeria, etc. on the soundtrack beacause the only tracks I listen to are "Nature Boy" (while David Bowie is no John Leguizamo.....lol just kidding) "Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friend," "Your Song," "One Day I'll Fly Away," "Elephant Love Medley," "Come What May," "El Tango De Roxanne," "Complainte De La Butte" and "Hindi Sad Diamonds."
The sad thing though is that none of the songs that I actually listen to (with the exception of Elephant Love Medley) are as they are originally in the movie.
While the soundtrack will hold me over until the DVD is released, I'm still sadly disappointed in the big wigs who decided to edit this CD.
