NO PISTOLS? NO THANKS IS RIGHT! October 31, 2003 3 out of 10 found this review helpful
I assume because of contractual obligations and/or greed, the Sex Pistols aren't on here, but how complete can it be without Mr. Rotten and co? There are in their place the usual overrated supects like Television, Patti Smith, Jonathan Richman, Buzzcocks, etc...but fortunately there is also a decent representation of the REAL punks - Iggy (a/k/a God?), Dolls, Thunders,Ramones,Damned,Clash,Dead Boys,Cramps,Jam, etc...but the most glaring omission is that the greatest song ever recorded (a/k/a "One Track Mind" by the late great Johnny Thunders)is not included. There are also a lot of one hit wonders that you have probably often wondered why you never heard more of. A few spins of some of these will explain why. All in all, well done as only Rhino can do it, but without The Pistols, Mr. Vicious (My Way) and the Steve Jones post-Pistols (Professionals, etc.) it is incomplete. Also, the artsy fartsy N.Y. bands and the L.A. stuff pales in comparison, and the best song of the Dead Kennedys(Too Drunk To ...)should have been included as well...get L.A.M.F., the two Dolls albums, the first four Ramones albums, the first two Dead Boys albums, The Pistols "Never Mind", the Clash's first album and "London Calling" and of course, "Raw Power" by Iggy and find out what its really all about...
a dog's breakfast or badly programmed radio December 2, 2003 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
Whilst it is great that this collection exists, and I admit it contains many of the best singles from that era, I agree with a lot of the criticsim that others seem to have made that it has been put together with too little thought. The track sequence doesn't make much sense and as such may discourage listeners from listening all the way thru. It has the same unsatisfactory feel as a CD changer in the boot of the car. However, I have few criticisms of the content, the person who did compile it was at least familiar with the songs that everyone was into in those days.

I may only be 16 but in order for me to know my music I must know the past as well as the present. And by past I don't mean five years ago. This box set opened a whole new world to me when it comes to punk. I could be concerted a 'new age' punk because I like Rancid and Good Charlotte but I'm also a fan of Sex Pistols and Social Distortion. This box set seems to have something for everyone. For me it was like a collection of some of the worlds greatest bands during that time. I really enjoyed it. I think that the kids with the pink hair or the kids that spike their hair and even the ones that shop in Hot Topic would enjoy this collection. But I one thing I didn't get out of it was how it seemed to label the listeners even more. If I remember right the reason most people became punks was because they where tired of being labeled. But its sad to see such a great thing label people. But even with the bad side to it I still love the box set.
Excellent collection of the famous & the obscure December 21, 2003 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
What can I say? As someone who grew up on this music, someone whose brain was forever molded by these songs, I cannot help but gush with praise for this fine compilation.Sure, the absence of the Sex Pistols is unfortunate, but just about every other important band of the period is represented by at least one track. This compilation takes me back to my youth in the late 70's.... when I was an eighth grader in San Antonio, TX ....always scouring the record stores for ANYTHING coming out of London or NYC...it was an exciting and exhilirating time and Rhino has done a superb job of capturing it for newer generations (and also for old punks like yours truly). So if you are at all interested in the early days of punk & new wave, you must purchase this collection. To me it's one long non-stop musical orgasm.
Perfect replacement for some of old vinyl... October 31, 2003 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
The first reviewer makes a great point about punk on old vinyl. One of my favorite Punk collections, "Burning Ambition", a double album, has never been re-released as a CD as far as I can tell. And much/most of it has never appeared as digitized MP3s on the net. This new one comes pretty damned close, so I'm on board. I still intend one day to try to digitize a few of my old albums -- but this is a lot easier
