5 out of 5 stars on the other hand....   September 29, 2005

I would have given it an EXTRA star just for introducing me to Died Pretty. Seriously, this box is every bit as good as the first two, plus it gives SO many new leads to follow. About a third of the tracks I have heard before, and like for sure. A third of them are bands I've never heard before, most of which are first rate and currently selling on ebay for 99c. This is a good thing for the voracious music accumulator. The other chunk are bands I *thought* I knew, but actually didn't, e.g The Hoodoo Gurus, who I am now going to pillage friends record collections for. Thats the deal here, these bands stuff is so much more available, but no less of a chocolate box. If anything, there are more outright surprises here than the first two boxes, of the "I didn't know *they* were *this* good" variety! Don't be put off by any thoughts of an "un-authentic" 80's-vibe, this is a solid stone classic collection. Well done, Rhino!

This sophomore collection holds no comparison to the more influential Nuggets collections-- Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era, 1965-1968; or Nuggets II: Original Artyfacts from the British Empire and Beyond. Those two box sets highlighted some unknown and early punk and pop rock influences and proved as influential as Harry Smith's folk collection. Not so here. I counted about an 1/8th of the songs decent, but have to ask how often will you return to these novelties? Not much.

No hair bands here. While the Cure and Jane's Addiction ruled the alternative airwaves, some of us preferred the good vibrations of XTC, the Lyres, Julian Cope, and the Rain Parade. These bands also inspired us Generation X'ers to seek out the Byrds, the Velvet Underground, the Beatles, and the Beach Boys. Radio shows are now getting in on the act, mixing the 60's originals, the neopsychedelic era of the 80's, and the new psychedelic & garage rock revivalists of today. Check out Little Steven's Underground Garage and also the Kaleidoscope Cafe on a web site called Radio Free Phoenix to hear all three periods together. Warning: these radio shows will increase your Amazon spending.

5 out of 5 stars BEST Box Set of the Year!   December 26, 2005

Whoever wrote the "Spotlight" review at the top...Half a Loaf? Are you kidding me?! This set is AWESOME!

I don't know what he was expecting! No Dirtbombs? Gories? White Stripes? Well, the booklet even says that they had to draw the line somewhere and some of these groups will have to be on the GRANDCHILDREN OF NUGGETS collection!!!

Don't let anyone tell ya otherwise, this set (100 songs) is awesome. The categories "Psychedelic," "Garage" and "Paisley Underground" describe exactly what this set seeks out: jangling guitars, Byrdsian melodies, and attitude!

I have two other Rhino sets, "Punk Rebellion" and "Left of the Dial," both of which I love. I find this one even better. I haven't heard of 90% of these bands (and I THOUGHT I was pretty knowledgable!), and even if I had heard of the band I had only heard a few of the tunes out of all 100 presented (most notably The La's, "There She Goes").

This is a superb set and I really recommend you give it a shot.

Half-Man Half-Biscuit--excuse me, Half a Loaf--has provided an excellent John Lyden quote (last show, Pistols, Frisco) as an intro, but the rest of the review? Well-worded, but, er, Rotten. This set's sublime, and I say that after dissing the last couple Rhino sets. I stuck wit' 'em, though, and, after wrestling Santa (one word: sooty) for this gift early Christmas Day and finally wresting the box from The Bearded One's grip, sat down, had a glass of egg nog, apologized to Santa, put a little more bourbon in his nogger, and then we sat and discovered what we busy sorts had missed that was Absolutely Superb about the 20 years documented herein. One word: MUCH. Perfectly balanced, track-placement-wise--Rhino's best effort at it--and, selection-wise, while not quite as far-reaching as Mr. Testy here would have absolutely liked, at least I found it FAR more unified than Fran Fried (a.k.a. Half a Loaf), and I must mind Half-Fried that EVERYONE IN THE WORLD AND HIS OR HER SECOND COUSIN, THE ONE WITH THE HARE-LIP AND THE TOUPEE, could sit here forever and pick apart the intricacies of Rhino's August Selection Committee and then sit and cry in his or her beer (or their second cousin's) at "what might have been." Sour grapes, spoilt egg-nog! Saying the Soft Boys don't belong on here is high treason and the utterer should be taken to the Tower forthwith; now, I AM in agreement with Franny Two-Star over the repetition of the Lyres's songs, but, with "Help You Ann," I could have that song on every single compilation I own and NEVER get tired of it, or feel I'd "been cheated" at its inclusion. (Same with The Lime Spiders's "Slave Girl.") Even if a bit miffed, three songs down, there's The Nashville Ramblers's "The Trains," a song Mr. Small Town for Most of His Life here would have NEVER heard, and their are dozens of such, er, "nuggets" within the box. Hey, I didn't think the Pandoras had all that much going for them the first time around; here, my evidently faulty ears have been made whole--they were superb. Ditto Plasticland's "Mink Dress," ditto this, ditto that--superb set.
