5 out of 5 stars GREAT COLLECTION   October 8, 2007

Although a lot of the songs come from one hit wonders, anyone who lived in the Bay area of the sixties or enjoyed the "hippie" music scene will love this collection. Even the lesser known groups are well recorded and the journey covers the era and the San fransisco sound very well. Just put it on and have fun. It also comes with an awesome book..

5 out of 5 stars The Best !!   September 24, 2007

Prehaps the best cd collection that RHINO has ever put together.Notice I said cd set not 'boxed set ' as this collection is housed in a magnificent book configuration that is almost worth the price on it's on. I cant think of a better set to introduce one to the SF scene than this. But to tell the truth ( and i'm not knocking it here) it's kindve a giant sampler for UK ACE/BIG BEAT NUGGETS FROM THE GOLDEN STATE series. If you like this sets you need to buy these cd's too . If your like me and have most of the BIG BEAT cd's there's still enough obscure ditties to warrant buying this set. Not sure if the sound quality is any better or aout the same but it's real good. This is a must have .

5 out of 5 stars A great set of discs   October 9, 2007

5 stars for the content, 5 stars for the book. Why, with all the experience Rhino has, would they think it was ok to house the discs in cardboard sleeves on the inside cover of the book?
The remastering of these obscure tracks is second to none. To leaf thru the pictures in the book is a throw back to some great memories. Well worth the money!
Just remember to be careful pulling your discs out the first time and to keep them housed in seperate cases rather than the book.

3 out of 5 stars Nostalgia   October 25, 2007

Pop music has come a looong way---if this set is anything to go by, very few 60's bands knew how to play an instrument!
Still, this music is powerfully evocative of a certain place and time, and I imagine a lot of people old enough to remember the Summer of Love (or some that wish they'd been there) will enjoy it very much. The four CDs (be warned, the sound quality is all over the place) are housed in a huge book, with lots of interesting commentary and plenty of pics (bands may not have known how to play, but they sure knew how to dress).

4 out of 5 stars Was it really a golden age? You decide.   November 23, 2007

As a twenty-year collector of psychedelia and longtime fan of the major San Francisco acts, this latest box set celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Summer Of Love was welcome. Even the most avid collectors will be hard-pressed to have heard every one of the obscure acts in this set, especially the ones represented on disc two. The box comes with an outstanding booklet featuring many rare photos and comprehensive liner notes, although the real focus is the music itself. After so many decades of being recognized as a "golden age", one gets to hear for oneself if all those dozens of obscure hippie bands produced anything of lasting worth.

For starters, it must be stated that this box only covers one aspect of the SF sound; the 20-minute guitar jams do not appear, although the single version of "Dark Star" does. The verdict on what is there is mixed; the major San Francisco acts were all great, although the ragbag
of more obscure acts, while incredibly diverse in sound and style, run the gamut from incredibly dated to surprisingly listenable. This is essential for any fan of the period, but for the cream of the SF sound I'd buy releases from the major acts (Dead, Airplane, Big Brother, Steve Miller, Santana)before this.
