4 out of 5 stars 'Bad' Is Now Even Better   June 17, 2008
4 out of 8 found this review helpful

The folks behind the scenes of pop/R&B singer Rihanna's marvelous career are truly doing a spectacular job. The sweet-voiced 20 year-old from Barbados has a listenable but limited vocal talent, yet in less than three years she has amassed a string of hit singles to her name, each one more memorable than the last. Solid songwriters churning out solid radio-ready compositions as well as her image - sexy yet classy, thoroughly everywoman - have turned Rihanna into a world-conquering superstar. "Good Girl Gone Bad: Reloaded" continues that success by giving a facelift to her 3rd studio album which debuted at #2 on the Billboard albums chart last year and easily outsold her first two LPs due to international smash "Umbrella," an endlessly listenable, steamily sexy summer scorcher courtesy of songwriting marvel The-Dream, as well as catchy, uptempo follow-up hits "Shut Up and Drive" and "Don't Stop the Music." "Hate That I Love You," an emotional duet with R&B singer/songwriter dynamo Ne-Yo, has also gained deserved praise, peaking at #7 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Never before has Rihanna landed a tremendous, instant smash in the form of a ballad, but thanks to "Take a Bow" she has added that feat to her list of accomplishments. With its classic he-done-me-wrong style, the song is instantly relatable to women of all ages. With a simple backing track of poignant piano and rhythmic handclaps, the stark composition lets Rihanna's vocals guide the way and the results are surprisingly impressive. It is a perfect vehicle for her voice that soars straight out of the ballpark. It is not only fantastic, but a classic that is sure to grace radio waves deep into the summer.

"You put on quite a show/Really had me goin'/Now it's time to go/Curtain's finally closin'/That was quite a show/Very entertaining/But it's over now/Go on and take a bow."

"If I Never Never See Your Face Again," a duet with Maroon 5 lead singer Adam Levine previously released on the band's 2007 album "It Won't Be Soon Before Long," is an intriguing listen due to the unlikely pairing of Levine's elastic, sexy vocals combining with Rihanna's, although it is a shame that it was not paired down in post-production; the track is listenable, but the production is too loud and busy with far too many bells and whistles, burying the vocals too deep in the mix

Scintillating dance floor romp "Disturbia," however, is a faultless new addition to the proceedings. Sure to get plenty of attention in the clubs with its sizzling, percolating beats and Rihanna's confident delivery, the song embodies solid contemporary dance-pop.

"Throw on your break lights/We're in the city of wonder/Ain't gonna play nice /Watch out, you might just go under/Better think twice/Your train of thought will be altered/So if you must faulter, be wise/Your mind is in disturbia."

The rest of the album is generous with ear candy and moderate on the filler. Cute, sing-songy affairs such as the bouncy "Say It" rub shoulders with overtly sexual rhythmic pop such as "Sell Me Candy" and "Push Up On Me," while the Justin Timberlake-penned "Rehab" (not a cover of the Amy Winehouse hit) and the title track are lyrically intense. "Question Existing" is by far the most soul-searching, with Rihanna singing of intense insecurity, even outlining the pitfalls inherent in living in her famous skin. While she is not a songwriter, the lyrics are so tailor-made for her that many are sure to check the liner notes expecting to see a writing credit for her on the track.

The title song, however, sports the best verse on the album: "You'd better learn how to treat us right/`Cause once a good girl goes bad/We gone forever."

"Reloaded" contains a bonus DVD with three live performances and a behind-the-scenes documentary.

2 out of 5 stars Weak, even for a re-release.   July 10, 2008

By now I hope everybody has figured out that re-releases usually don't benefit anyone except the greedy people at the record label headquarters. It gets them more money, and may even boost the album to the next RIAA certification. It also allows their artist to remain relevant for a little while longer, I guess. It's no secret. But still... couldn't Def Jam make it a little less obvious with this "Reloaded" edition of Rihanna's third album? The CD and DVD are housed in the same type of foldout digipak that the original came in and the artwork has been left virtually unchanged, which I think is extremely lazy. The album was already very good, and hands-down the best of Rihanna's career. The three new songs slapped on the end of the tracklist really don't add all that much. "Take A Bow" is just alright. It was mildly entertaining and catchy the first time I heard it, but by now it's overplayed--and I don't even listen to the radio much--and the Ne-Yo and Stargate collaborations are getting very tired and formulaic. "If I Never See Your Face Again" was originally just a Maroon 5 song, but apparently Rihanna was invited to join in for this "duet." Rihanna should not try to do rock. It just doesn't work, and her vocals and Adam's just do not go together. It's as simple as that. "Disturbia," which will be the set's seventh single, is by far the best. It follows the new trend of Euro-pop inspired tunes and it's pretty catchy and even a little bit creative. It's co-written by and features background vocals from her supposed boyfriend, Chris Brown. The DVD is lame, simply put, and its only purpose is to get us to buy the Good Girl Gone Bad Live DVD that's going to be coming out later this summer. It's nice to see what Rihanna is like as a person in the documentary bits, but the performances are extremely subpar and not very entertaining. In conclusion, this is weak, even for a re-release. Rather than releasing rip-off discs, Rihanna should just go back in the studio to record a whole new album of fresh material. Good Girl Gone Bad has has seven--yes, seven--singles and counting! Talk about overexposure. And the album has only gone platinum... inexcusable, even in today's harsh industry. Even though the album is great, it's time to put it to rest and move on to a new era. Do not buy this unless you are a die-hard fan or completist.

4 out of 5 stars CD companies suck   June 30, 2008

The real fans purchase the albums in the first few weeks of their release & 6 months down the track the casual fans get expanded (better) editions. The record companies are trying to get money out of the fans twice for just a little bit of extra content. Every one feels sorry for the record companies with all this illegal downloading going on at the moment. Why should we feel sorry for them when they are ripping off the real fans. Someone mentioned that we should purchase the 3 extra tracks on mp3. RUBBISH. It would be only fair that these extra tracks should be available free for download even if it meant somehow proving that you purchased the inferior release. I'm sure 6 months down the track there will be an expanded version of Usher's new CD like there were for his last 2 CDs. Chris Brown, Fergie etc are all releasing expanded versions. It wouldn't bother me if the record companies released both an expanded & standard version at the same time, but they don't. Anyway this CD is really good. Love the Maroon 5 duet.
To the CD companies. A big fat GET STUFT!

2 out of 5 stars Again, what was the point?   June 28, 2008

As with my review of the Forever Edition of the Exclusive album, I say 'What's the bloody point?' Other than 'Disturbia' which is a fantastic song, why re-release an album that took a year to sell a million copies of??? She gave us a good soundtrack to get our dance on last year, but instead of adding 3 odd songs on the same album, why not work on new material for a new album? It's very disappointing. Please do not get me started on 'Take a Bow', is everyone listening to the same song as me, or has "Rihanna" put cotton-wool in your ears?

People need to stop the madness and bring us some more fresh music, not the same old song and dance. And stop going to 'Stargate' for music PLEASE!
