A fine debut, but be mindful of your expectations. February 2, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
With reasonable expectations, a Nightwish fan should thoroughly enjoy a listening of this album. One should expect that on this album, the band does not display the song-crafting prowess that can be heard on later efforts like Century Child and Once. One should also not expect to hear the amazing production quality found on the Once record. Those who complain about these aspects are clearly ignorant about the natural progression of a great band.
A true fan of NW SHOULD own this record, and treasure it as the beginning of the Nightwish journey. To describe the music as a whole, it is mostly very dark and gothic, with tinges of power metal influence. The slower ballad-style songs, such as the title track, are impressive and moving.
The worst song on the record by far is The Carpenter, being drenched with some of the worst male vocals ever recorded (a fact that Tuomas Holopainen, NW composer now admits freely). In spite of these weak moments; however, Angels Fall First is a record worth owning. Fans newer or totally new to Nightwish; however, should start with Once (for symphonic/melodic metal fans) or Wishmaster (for power metal fans). Each of these records is more accessible and gripping than Angels'.
To conclude, if you are building your Nightwish collection, buy this album last, but DO buy it. I do not recommend it as a first exposure to the band. If you're a fan of dark, off-beat, gothic music, make your purchase.
Better than your average CD, but not as good as their others August 13, 2001 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This CD has a few good songs on it, but it does get boring in a few places as well. 'Elvenpath' is pretty good musically, but has some rather cheesy lyrics. After that, it gets rather boring up until you hit the title track, which is a nice ballad. Then 'Tutenkhamen,' 'Nymphomaniac Fantasia'(the best song on the album) and 'Know Why the Nightingale Sings' show up, which really make the album exciting. This is the only CD by Nightwish I own, but from what I've heard of the songs on the other ones, I wish I had gotten those instead. I'd recommend getting the other CDs first. Then get this one to round out your collection.
Their best. A refreshing change from typical metal. December 6, 2001 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Contrary to what most other people say, I like this one much better than their latest two, The Oceanborn and Wishmaster. Tarja's voice is beautiful and the instruments are played beautifully. Alanis Morissette absolutely brings shame to a flute; not these guys. -Jeremy
Great melodic metal February 2, 2002 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Although Oceanborn was trully better than this album, Angels fall first still has wonderfull music on it......later albums deteriorate, but thisone is still Nigtwish at their best. My favourite song on the album is most certanly the Elven Path, it is the most dynamic one. What I also liked was that they included a song in finish. I don`t understand a word, but they are finish, so I think at least one song on the album should be in their native language and they had the guts to put it there. It is a good choice if you like melodic metal with a very nice, clean female vocal.

When I bought this CD I also purchased Centuary Child, Ocean Born and the From Wishes To Eternity DVD and already had Wishmaster. Since this was the oldest of Nightwish's work I kind of let it sit around for a while. Recently it has become one of my favorites. Elvenpath: Elvenpath path is a Nightwish classic with fantastic (heavy)guitar work by Emppu and hard driving perfectly sung vocals by Tarja. Simply fantastic! I was kind of new to music this hard and initially didn't like Elvenpath. But it has become a favorite. Beauty and the Beast: It's ok. Tarja's voice is the best in the world and I would just as soon forget about any mediocare male vocalist who sings with her. I can tolerate Toumas because without him there would be no Nightwish... If you can slog through or like male vocals mixed with Tarja this song has some great synth work and guitar work. I'll take my Tarja straight (or neat as the Brits say) thank you. The Carpenter: Toumas's vocals are a little tentative but have a charming quality. Tarja vocals are good with good guitar and keyboard efforts by Emppu and Toumas. Overall I like this song and it has intersting lyrics. Astral Romance: Great although relatively short vocal section by Tarja (partly with Toumas) fantastic keyboards by Toumas and guitar by Emppu. From four minutes in to the end of the song are some of the best guitar work you can ever hear with equally fantastic accompanying keyboard work by Toumas. This is a fantastic song. Like usual from Nightwish. Angels Fall First: Kind of slower balady song with emphasis on Tarjas vocals accompanied with orchestral synths and accoustic guitar. Good song. Tutankhamen: This song is a little wearing to me. The Egyptian sort of tone just doesn't appeal to me very much. My son who is a supreme metal fan likes it though. I think it is a good creative effort. Nymphomaniac Phantasia: Lyrics at the end are a bit severe for a male... But very passionately done by Tarja. Great Song. Great Synth work by Toumas with a great flute accompaniment by Mr. Esa Lehtinen. This is a great song. Nightingale Sings: Fantastic Song. Great soaring vocals by Tarja. Emppu is fantastic with great keyboard support by Toumas. Lappi Series: Great relaxing vocals sung by Tarja with acoustic guitar by Emppu. You won't go wrong buying this CD. This, like all Nightwish CDs is well done. Tarja Turunen is the best female vocalist I have ever heard. My favorite songs on this CD are the Nightwish classic Elvenpath, Asral Romance, Nymphomaniac Fantasia, Nightengale and the Lapi Songs.
