Whoaaa....now THIS is music! May 30, 2007 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
WOW!! Pretty much sums it up. I can't get enough of these guys. I'd been hearing about Nightwish for the last couple of years, and now I understand the buzz.
They've created a sound all their own, blending classical, keyboard-based composition, crunchy guitars, and a truly gorgeous operatic female voice into a very heady brew. Some people have said the combination doesn't work. To each his own. For me, it works amazingly well. The talent is topnotch.
Two songs I especially love: Kuolema Tekee Taiteilijan - - simply enchanting. Sung in Finnish by the amazing Tarja (now departed from the band to pursue opera in Germany, I heard), it's like nothing I've ever heard before. Dark Chest of Wonders - - can't stop singing or humming it. Impossibly catchy.
This band has it ALL: class, style, musicianship, songs, stunning vocals, and, for those who appreciate a bit of eye candy on the live stage (I do, and won't apologize for it) - - that celebrated beauty which denizens of the cold Viking north seem so effortlessly blessed with. I'm excited about the debut of their new singer, this current tour stateside. Following on the heels of a voice like Tarja's, she's got her work cut out for her. I wish her all the best!!
Somethin' for everybody, here. I warn ya, this music will grow on you.
I call it Viking Rock!!! This Album is Awesome!!! December 23, 2004 5 out of 8 found this review helpful
My friend's dad came home with this album one night and suprised the heck out of me cause i didn't figure him for the metal kind of guy. I had a litsen, and bought it the next day and plan on ordering the other albums. I've read in the reviews here that people say you shouldn't listen to this one first if you've never heard them, i disagree, i've probably listened to this thing 100 times in the past week, its incredible!! I can't recommend this album enough. And if your looking for a reference, Night Wish is like Evanescence but more metal and the lead singers voice is more operatic. Enjoy!
left me in awe... March 8, 2005 5 out of 8 found this review helpful
To start out, i have only listened to one of Nightwishs cd's. That would be Oceanborn. That is pretty good. Since i heard that cd i have been a Nightwish addict. I just had to get there latest album, Once.
Within 10 min of arriving at my house i put the cd in the computer, ripped it, and put it on my mp3 player..and i havent been able to stop listening to it since.( about 3 or 4 days now) It is that good. The song structures are breathtaking. MY favorites so far are all of them. Every single song on Once is like listening to a different cd.This cd is going to be one of my all time favorite's.
I recommend getting this cd if you are a Evanescence fan. Nightwish is like evanescence...except with a lot more energy.
Nightwish does it again March 28, 2005 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
when buying this album, i was expecting something like their earlier album, "Oceanborn", but when i popped this into my CD player i got everything thats on "Oceanborn", and more! this album is heavier, the guitars are refined, but sadly enough, Tarja doesnt sing quite as operatically, which first got me into the band. Dont let this stop you though, this is a very powerful album, with my favorite song being the ten minute orchestral masterpiece "Ghost Love Score". so if youre a returning Nightwish fan, dont hesitate and buy this, but if youre a newcomer to the band, check out their older stuff first.
Great album, good writing, but more of the same... May 2, 2005 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
The blockbuster sound and totally unique and innovative sounds that this band created on albums like Wishmaster and Century Child is now a signature, and each time Nightwish puts out a new release, I always expect something earth shattering, something that pushes the envelope further. Not so with Once, though. It is vintage Nightwish. Tarja has never sounded better, the woman is a miracle of modern vocal presentations. Other than Floor Jansen, there is no one else with the range, immaculate precision, and depth of this woman; She is angelic.
This recording is well written, and performed, but not groundbreaking the way many of their earlier albums were. Not all recordings can be as significant as some of their others, where they were clearly inventing a new sound. My personal opinion is that the material was tailored to the more commercially acceptable side of the band's writing and performing style, and rightfully so, as they are having a commercial breakthrough, which is great for the whole genre. They are one of the few BIG acts in symphonic metal.
It is without a doubt more metalic in its symphonic landscape, but not to the detriment of the melodious flair that they always have.
I do like this record, for me though, it does not reach out and grab me by the throat the way many of their other collections have. I'm definitely not lamenting that "the earlier stuff was better", as I always like to follow skilled and creative musicians down a path when they are changing. Maybe thats what's missing for me here, the growth in songwriting and outrageous sounds and passages (although it is present on 'The Siren', and to some extent in Ghost Love Score). But despite all my ramblings, this is still vintage Nightwish, solid, beautiful, bombastic, symphonic, and nearly perfect.
