3 out of 5 stars good effort but not as SOAD   December 10, 2007
2 out of 3 found this review helpful

Few tracks stand out and the CD is not strong and heavy as SOADs. The absence of typical SOAD (Daron) sound can be seen, more effort is put in the lyrics and less on the music quality.
Anyhow, I still await a next SOAD CD with both Serj and Daron on board.

3 out of 5 stars Love SOAD, especially love Serj, but this is honestly 3.5 stars   December 29, 2007
2 out of 4 found this review helpful

After having this album for a couple months, I give it 3.5 stars. I honestly want to give it more stars so badly because I'm a huge fan of SOAD, especially Serj, but this album just doesn't deserve it. Almost every song has at least moments of brilliance, but there's just too much mediocrity mixed in. I feel like Serj may have taken on a little too much with doing all of the singing and playing most of the instruments and producing. There are excellent songs, like "The Unthinking Majority" and "Empty Walls" and very good songs like "Money" and "Honking Antelope," but there are others that are a little more hit and miss, sometimes even within the song.

Even his lyrics suffer at times. While there are some of his brilliant, biting lyrics, there are also multiple songs where he just repeats the same lines over and over, as if he's too overextended doing everything to spend as much time as he usually does on every verse and chorus. Here are a few examples from different songs:

FROM "BABY":
Baby oh baby,
Baby my baby,
Baby ooh babe
I miss you, lalalala,
Baby oh baby,
Baby my babe,
Baby ooh babe
I miss you

FROM "LIE LIE LIE":
Lalalalalalalala lie lie lie
Lalalalalalalala lie lie lie
Lalalalalalalala lie lie lie
Lalalalalalalala lie lie lie

FROM "SAVING US":
Tearing us,
You're tearing us,
You're breaking us,
You're breaking us,
You're carrying us,
Carrying us,
You're saving us,
You're saving us...

You're tearing us,
You're tearing us,
You're breaking us,
Breaking us,
You're killing us,
Killing us,
You're saving us...

FROM "THE SKY IS OVER":
Even though you can't afford
The sky is over,
Even though we can't afford
The sky is over,
I don't want to see you go,
The sky is over
Even though we can't afford
The sky is over,
I don't want to see you go,
The sky is over
Even though we can't afford
The sky is over,
I don't want to see you go,
The sky is over
Even though we can't afford
The sky is over,
The sky is over us.

FINAL THOUGHT:
I still recommend this album because the good outweighs the mediocre. But I think his next solo album will be even better. While he does surprisingly well on the guitar, it isn't quite at the same level as SOAD, but it's so good to hear his voice and creativity, that this album is certainly worth purchasing, but I truly believe that too many of the reviews are giving in to what they want the album to be instead of letting the whole album speak for itself. Serj is amazing, and this album is a very good solo album, but I look forward to the next one building on the strengths of this one and being even better.

1 out of 5 stars Absolute Garbage   December 30, 2007

Serj Tankian has to be one of the worst singers ever in the history of Rock. If you have listened to any songs done by System Of A Down it is the exact same thing with listening to his solo album without his band behind him. Why waste your money when you already heard his songs with System Of A Down? Now the only thing that makes System Of A Down more bearable is because of the other members of the band you remove them and you get absolute garbage spewed out by the worst singer in Rock. This guy has absolutely no talent!

5 out of 5 stars "Love is not about the prophet nor the riches in your dreams." Without a doubt, the best album of 2007.   June 3, 2008

"Nelith is a prophet, from the prophet came the king, from the king came the prophet, from the prophet came the swing, from the swing came creation, from creation came love, you don't know what this life is all about!"
-Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition

As a metal fan, this album is refreshing. I listen to bands like System of a Down (Serj's former band), Iron Maiden, old school Metallica, Children of Bodom, Coheed and Cambria, The Mars Volta. THis album is amazing, and my favorite album of 2007. It's #3 on my favorite albums, and this may be the "Powerslave" of the 2000's.

On this album, Serj takes a direction similar to his SOAD stuff, except this time, in a personal way. "Empty Walls" is about his family dying in the Lebanon riots. "Money" is very reminiscent of Chop Suey- one of those songs that's fast in the chorus and slow in the verse. You can feel the emotion in these songs off the album. "Saving Us" is a song with lots of emotion, great music and lyrics too. "Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition" is a wierd, but great track nonetheless. And of course, the best song, "Beethoven's C***". A duet between Serj and a backup singer, with great music and lyrics.

Overall, this is an amazing album, and worth it if you like System of a Down. Yeah, SOAD is one thing, but Serj by himself is another. Be sure to buy this album!

5 out of 5 stars a very good solo album from serj   October 24, 2007

very deep and strong lyrics from serj, which we all know u can pull off.
i was very ify about his solo cd but i poped it in and i said wow.
if u are expecting hard core soad this isnt what you are looking for. this plays smooth with some signs of metal. but it to me is a classic album from serj, it reminds me alot of toxicity (lyric wise)
for all soad fans it is a must buy.
