4 out of 5 stars Very Good Tribute Album   September 25, 2005

I mainly bought this cd because of the band Failure being on here. But there also some others on here that I like as well. Never Let Me Down Again is done by the Smashing Pumpkins and it is a standout on here. Enjoy The Silence by Failure was the main reason I bought this and it is an amazing version.Another standout for me was Moster Magnet covering Black Celebration and Deftones covering To Have And To Hold. Overall the album may appeal to people differently but those were the standouts for me being that I am a fan of all of these bands and it was nice to hear their interpretations of these songs.

5 out of 5 stars This has become one of my favorite albums   April 2, 2000

Having read the previous reviews, my mind is simply boggled by all the negative feedback from Depeche Mode fans. I've never been a big DM fan myself, and sought this recording after hearing the *incredible* cut by the Smashing Pumpkins, which absolutely blew me away the first time I heard it. I was unfamiliar with some of the bands on this CD, but think every track is just fantastic. When I first heard the Rammstein track, I thought "What the hell is this?" but grew to love it after a few listenings. This prompted me to seek a recording of DM doing "Stripped", which I found to be incredibly dull and lifeless. Depeche Mode should feel truly honored by this masterful tribute.

This was far from a tribute. It was, however, a collection of no-name bands using this project as a means of advertising themselves, not as a tribute to anyone. The Cure and the Smashing Pumpkins gave the best efforts here, although one wonders what made Cure-god Robert Smith decide to do a DM song. Is this the same guy who openly criticized DM for many years?

5 out of 5 stars Awesome for people who are DM and techno fans   January 31, 2000

This CD is great! We have some great bands like `The Smashing Pumpkins' and `The Cure'. But in my opinion the best tracks comes from `Gus Gus' and `Rabbit In The Moon'. All bands made personal versions to DM songs, so many fans will not like. Just for people with open minds.

4 out of 5 stars These tributes prove the greatness of the original songs.   July 12, 2000

Someone said that Depeche Mode fans might not enjoy thisrecord. I consider myself a fan, and I love most of the songs onhere. But as I said, even the lousier covers make it obvious that DM's greatest strength is the songwriting of Martin Gore. I wasn't too impressed with the Smashing Pumpkins cover, which seems lifeless to me. That's not surprising, since it first appeared as a B-side around 1994, before the Pumpkins acquired a more electronic sound that would have served them well here. There's some surprisingly good stuff, though, like the GLU track, The Cure doing "World In My Eyes," and Failure's version of "Enjoy The Silence" - one of the best pop songs ever written, for my money. I'd never heard of Gus Gus before, but found their version of "Monument" very moody and interesting. And Rammstein's "Stripped" cover is so hysterical I can't stop listening to it. So if you like Depeche Mode for their slippery synth-pop sound, this record might not be for you. But if you just love the songs themselves, as I do, you should definitely give it a shot.
