5 out of 5 stars A Perfect CD   September 6, 2002

The Cure is one of those bands that I am very familiar with thanks to my older sister's love for them and especially for Robert Smith. I was familiar with some of their songs like "Love Song" and "Friday I'm in Love", but I really didn't know much more than that. Funny thing has happened to me as I have gotten older. I have found myself getting into the bands that my sister was listening to over 15 years ago like the Smiths, the Butthole Surfers, and the Cure. I knew that this CD was going to be good by reading all the positive reviews here, but my God, I did not know it was going to be THAT good!

From the first minute of track 1, "Plainsong", to the end of track 12, "Untitled", this is 72 minutes of some of the greatest music I have ever heard. "Plainsong" in itself, is a song that instantly gave me chills when I first heard it. Just a completely unreal song! It gets better and better (if that is possible) as the CD goes on. "Love Song", "Pictures of You", "Lullaby", "Same Deep Water as You", "Fascination Street", and "Disintegration" as well as "Plainsong" are all the top-notch tracks; however, the rest of the tracks are solid...there is really not a weak track on this CD. As others have said, it is a very dark CD, but it is one that you can listen to regardless of the weather outside (although it is appreciated better if the weather outside is rain). If you are getting into the Cure for the first time, you will definitely need to buy this CD (although buying "Staring at the Sea" and "Galore" would also be great starter-kit Cure CDs). After listening to this CD, you will want to get more Cure. There is no question in my mind that after hearing this work that Robert Smith is one of the greatest musicians of all-time. I have a substantial CD collection and this CD ranks right up there with "London Calling", "OK Computer", "Siamese Dream", and "Mezzanine" as one of the greatest in my collection. If you love music at all, you have to buy this CD. You will not regret it.

1 out of 5 stars An Epic Pity Party   January 8, 2004

The Cure is a close second to U2 in the race for being the worst band in rock history. It's astounding how horrible their music really is. Asking me to listen to the Cure or U2 is like asking me whether I would like to be shot in the gut or kneecaps.
"Disintegration" is nothing but a 71 minute and 42 second pity party. Heavily laced with cheesy '80's synthesizers the music and vocals are so fragile it's is sure to induce nausea at least. They add complex melodies just to show how pretensious they are.
It's not dark and gloomy album but rather a pathetic opus. Dark and gloomy is murder suicide, and child molestation, not universal life experiences. Middle class anxieties and broken relationships are not heavy emotions; it's normal life experience. The album, along with the Cure's whole career, shows how anything can be dramatized. It's surprised they don't whine about hangnails and bad parking spots.
The cherry on top of this sunday is Robert Smith's voice. If his pathetic whining voice is not the most annoying thing recorded, I don't know what is. How anybody could stand it for more than five minutes is a mystery.
There are not enough words to describe how awful the complete waste of time called "Disintegration" really is. Horrible, disgusting, nasty, wretched, and atrocious doesn't even to begin to describe the listening experience.

5 out of 5 stars Hits close to my heart.   June 11, 2005

This cd is wonderful. Disintegration itself stands as one of my favorite songs ever, along with Lovesong and Last Dance. With Lullaby, it could stand as a dance song. Fascination Street is unbelievably catchy yet dark at the same time.
If you're like me and you go around reading reviews to see if you would really enjoy a cd, i assure you that you will not regret getting it. All the songs are plain brilliant and it is a must-have for those into great lyrics & melodies.

5 out of 5 stars The Most Important Album Of My Life   December 3, 2005

I purchased this album when i was 16 years old. I was already a huge Cure fan, I already owned Boys Dont Cry, Three Imaginary Boys, Seventeen, Faith, Pornography, Japanese Whispers, The Top, Head on the Door (my 2nd fav), Kiss me kiss me kiss me, and the compilations. I loved them. But when Disintegration came out, It changed my perception of music alltogether. From the opening song, througout till the end there is not one throw away track, not a ONE! They all blend and shift and integrate themselves . It can be on permanent play in my cd player and i would never get tired of it, NO other album has ever had that distinction with me.

They just don't make music this good anymore. This is one of the few albums that I could listen to over and over and was one of the last great albums of the 20th century. Great stuff!
