5 out of 5 stars Nightwish:The beginning of the best band ever!   October 17, 2004

I was reading the other reviews and I thought I would add my opinion. This Cd was their first effort adn I loved it. Although Tuomas' voice may not be as melodic as Tarja's I wouldn't call it awful. It's just not polished. Elvenpath is one of the best songs ever. Tuomas adds Lord of the Rings into a song. What other band could pull that one off? This cd gives way to the startings of metal you find in their other Cd's. Oceanborn is an acievement, often hailed as their best(Don't hurt me but I d no agree, although I do love the album). Wishmaster was my favorite until Once. I love the songs on Wishmaster, there are no bad tracks. Century Child breaks the mold, as they add in heavy guitars and Marco's voice. Once tops them all. Nightwish started with this and has worked their way to the top. Every band starts somewhere. Nightwish started on top and stayed there.

4 out of 5 stars Nice acoustics, but still no Oceanborn   June 19, 2005

It's good for what it is. It's no surprise that Nightwish's presentation isn't quite as confident as on later releases. After all, who could've guessed that they would become one of Finland's most successful musicians in history? But Angels Fall First still delivers, and anyone who has heard their later material owes it to themselves to go back and pick this gem up.

Like any other Nightwish album, the music is clearly driven by Tarja's heavenly operatic vocals. The woman sings like no other, and she's what makes such songs as "Elvenpath" and "Tutankhamen" stand out from the typical power metal mold. Emppu, one of the guitarists I respect most, once again fails to disappoint with his fast and harmonious riffs. What makes Angels Fall First stand out from later releases, however, is the frequent use of acoustics. They are done quite beautifully, if I must say, and fit the songs very well. It is no surprise that the band originally started out as an acoustic project. Jukka's drumming and Tuomas' keyboards are once again well done, but the thin production isn't exactly to my liking, particularly the keyboards, which often blend in too much with the guitars. My main problem however, is Tuomas' vocals. I notice others have the same irritations - he sounds way off-key, can't harmonize with Tarja, has too strong of an accent, etc. I'm glad he doesn't sing on any other albums, if I must say so myself.

I'd say the highlights for me include the driving "Elvenpath", the beautiful ballad "Angels Fall First", the Egyptian-oriented "Tutankhamen" and also "The Carpenter", which is far from perfect (bad vocal parts, annoying clicking noises) but still manages to be a decent Nightwish single. Their first, actually. =)

Once again, get this if you've heard the other albums and like them. I still don't think I'd recommend this as a first Nightwish experience, let that be Oceanborn, or maybe Century Child.

9/10

3 out of 5 stars Good introductory work by this FINLAND band   March 9, 2001

THis is a solid album, full of good moments, but also full of boring metal cliches. The female singer is amazing, but not all the songs are good. Teir latest work, "WISHMASTER" is a master-piece. THis here is not.

5 out of 5 stars Not a masterpiece, but not far away from one.   August 25, 2001

Nightwish is as close to perfection as any band can be. It has splendid female voices -- not like Tristania, where the female is second to the male, but where most songs -have- only female vocals to them. Oceanborn would be their best work -- and my favorite CD. But Angels Fall First is still wonderful. There isn't a song in it that I don't appreciate, even if they might take a few listens to enjoy. Tuomas -- the piano player, and the band member who comes up with the lyrics and music -- actually sings in some of the songs. In later albums, his voice is absent. In addition, the first Lapland song features Tarja (the vocalist) singing in Finnish -- absolutely beautiful, if not comprehensible to someone who doesn't speak the language. The "theme" of this CD seems to be the fantastic -- the titles alone of Elvenpath and Beauty and the Beast support that, as well as the contents of many other songs. It might not be the masterpiece that later albums are, but Angels Fall First is still better than most. If you take the time to appreciate it.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!   July 16, 2002

Angels Fall First doesn't seem to be given nearly enough credit as Nightwish's other albums. Oceanborn and Wishmaster are usually considered better CDs. However, Angels Fall First is also a masterpiece -- and, in my opinion, better than Wishmaster. It has Tarja's beautiful alto, establishing Nightwish as the leading female-vocalist metal band. Tuomas, the keyboardist and the songwriter for the band, also has a singing part, although Tarja clearly dominates. The songs are generally quite good.

ELVENPATH is probably one of the most popular Nightwish songs -- at least, it is one of the most downloaded. An upbeat, clearly fantasy song.

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST is not one of the most outstanding songs on the CD. It's a bit too long. However, this does not mean that it's a bad song.

THE CARPENTER refers to Jesus -- another song where Tuomas has a singing role.

ASTRAL ROMANCE is also very good, if not the best on the CD. There's a better version of it on the mini-CD Over the Hills and Far Away, however.

ANGELS FALL FIRST seens to be the favorite of most reviewers. I don't know why. I never really liked the song much.

TUTANKHAMEN is a fun, upbeat song, one I've sung along to several times. Very good.

NYMPHOMANIAC FANTASIA is my personal favorite Angels Fall First song. Rather scary, but beautiful, and quite interesting.

KNOW WHY THE NIGHTINGALE SINGS? It's alright, but not one of my favorites.

LAPPI is made up of four different tracks -- all of them beautiful, but only one in English.

This is a must-have CD for any Nightwish fan, and one of the best CDs in my collection. It's not as good as Oceanborn -- but still worthwhile. To put it mildly.
