5 out of 5 stars Great Album   May 1, 2003

This is by far the best album I have heard in years, and being over 40 this goes back quite aways. Not being a big fan of the so-called nu-metal bands, which all seem to follow the "let's see how loud and angry we can sound formula" I was very surprised by this band. I was curious about them after hearing the single, "Bring me to Life". I think the comparison to Linkin' Park is way off. Just cause they put a male metal/rapper in the song everyone says, "Hey Linkin' Park Jr.". I think there sound is much more diverse and full. With the combination of strings, piano, synths, and heavy guitar you would think this would be one big sonic mess, but they pull it off quite well. Make no mistake, all of the various instrumentation and arrangements, are there for one purpose, and that is to support Amy Lee's amazing vocals. Even in their heaviest moments they make sure her voice is front and center and not obscured by anything. I just have to say, where did this girl come from? She is by far one of the best female vocalists to come along in years. She has the dynamic range of Pat Benetar with the melodic voicing of Ann Wilson, and she manages to eclipse both of them. I think the real test of her vocal power are on the 2 ballads, "My Immortal", and "Hello". I think these songs show that Amy could sing the phone book and make it compelling. I have listened to this album at least 30 times in the last 5 days, and I have not tired of it yet. I can't wait to see what they do next.

5 out of 5 stars A+ debut album   May 3, 2003

This CD is absolutely brilliant! I wouldn't call it heavy metal, though (which I equate with Metallica, Pantera, etc.) It is rather a perfect fusion of darkwave lyrics and melodies, metal guitar with strings, piano, and oh, yes, the voice of an angel "fallen" from Heaven. My favorite part is the seamless segue from the end of "Tourniquet" into "Imaginary", it sends chills up my spine. This is my new favorite band and I also can't wait to see what they do next. However, despite their spiritually meaningful lyrics, they are not Christian rock (check out the article at MTV.com "Evanescence's Label Tells Christian Outlets to Yank 'Fallen'") which makes it easier for my pagan sensibilities to enjoy.

My only question is, when are they coming to Denver??

1 out of 5 stars Unique? Give me a break....   July 13, 2003

I appreciate the fact that Evanescence are as popular as they are, being a female fronted metal band and all, but what they're doing is really not as cutting edge as most MTV-fed teeny boppers would have you believe. As opposed to the "Goth Gods of the Linkin Park Generation" or whatever other names have been slapped on them by Teen Magazine, they end up sounding more like a poor man's Lacuna Coil. Only whereas Lacuna Coil's "Comalies" is complex, sweeping, and beautiful, Evanescence's "Fallen" seldom manages to rise above boring nu-metal tunes that we've all heard a thousand times before.

2 out of 5 stars Three words - overproduced, uninspired, banal   March 4, 2003

While 2003 looks like it's going to be a good year for rock music thanks to the many true artists playing today, Evanescence offers little more than boring, commercialized movie music. Wind-Up Records, who have signed other spectacularly shallow groups such as Drowning Pool and Creed, are going for a trifecta with Evanescence and are making all the same mistakes. Coming across as one part nu-metal, another part pseudo-goth, 'Fallen' falls short in all aspects and sounds like a bad mixture between Linkin Park and Type O Negative. The only shining element of the group, the female vocalist Amy Lee, does have quite an angelic voice. Unfortunatly her musical counterparts can't seem to write appropriate music to back her up and instead go for the same cliche chord structures and nu-metal riffs. Also, we can't help but laugh when the rapping starts; it just sounds completly ridiculous and out of place. It's as if the producer told them that due to the success of Linkin Park that they need a rapper, and the band sheepishly abliged. In general, 'Fallen' sounds completely overproduced in most parts, causing it to lose any emotion and drive that it might possibly have otherwise.

Ultimatly Evanescence brings nothing new or interesting to the musical table. The lyrics are silly, the album is vastly overproduced, and their entire act screams 'wanna-be'. All the black, metal-studded clothing and photoshop filters can't change this band from being anything more than two former church-camp kids. Pass on this Clear Channel "buzz band".

5 out of 5 stars An amazing debut! Finally something good out of Arkansas   March 5, 2003

When I first heard the single "Bring Me to Life", I was immediately taken by surprise. I heard a dark, guitar-driven music much like early Nine Inch Nails and current Linkin Park, but, what's this - with the haunting vocals of a female (Amy Lee)?! This duo out of Little Rock is about to explode on the scene in 2003. I had the pleasure of seeing them play live here in Chicago, and what a show they put on! With their heavy guitars, excellent use of sampling, light echoing pianos and even some orchestral music (with some background choirs even), you will be drawn into their dark (yet NOT depressing like Marilyn Manson) world. From the openings track "Going Under" to the last chorus on "Whisper" you will live in their world, if only briefly, a world I didn't want to leave. Standout songs to check out are "Bring me to Life". "Tourniquet" and "Whisper". FALLEN is quite a debut album, one of hopefull MANY to come from this talented duo. Finally something to talk about from Arkansas besides Bill Clinton!
