Tis a good album November 16, 2003 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
Let me start by saying that I would reccomend "Ocean Born" or "Wishmaster" over this cd, but all the same, it is an excellent album for anyone who enjoys symphonic metal, and is fully worth the cost.Another reviewer mentioned the male vocals are awful - I would disagree. They really are not bad, Marco can sing pretty well. They do however take something away from the music, if you're like me and just really love Tarja's vocals. But trust me, the male vocals on this album are much superior to any on "Angels Fall First" ;). I'm a huge Nightwish fan, and as such, I loved this cd. For your benefit, I'll list tracks I most enjoyed: 2 "End of All Hope" (very opera-ish, excellent song), 3 "Dead to the World", 4 "Ever Dream", 6 "Forever Yours", 8 "Feel For You", 9 "The Phantom of the Opera" (Nightwish's version is great) and 10 "Beauty of the Beast". I didn't much like "Slaying the Dreamer", and "Ocean Soul" and "Bless the Child" were good, but average as far as Nightwish songs go. So, you've heard my opinion. Buy "Ocean Born" over this (and be sure to get the cd with "Sleeping Sun" - best. song. ever.), or "Wishmaster". If you already have those, then go ahead and get this one next, and if you find you really love nightwish, wrap up your collection with "Angels...".
Nightwish has turned it up a notch! December 6, 2003 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
First of all, I'm very surprised about this cd! I purchased Wishmaster over the summer, in Florida, while on vacation, and I liked what I heard. For what I'm looking for in a power metal band, Century Child hits a homerun! Tarja, as usual, is a fantastic vocalist, but along with that, the band just flat out packs a heavy PUNCH! Nightwish offers more than just a bunch of boring, fast riffs, like many other bands seem to be obsessed with! Nightwish's Century Child offers a great balance of lead and background vocals, moderately paced, heavy songs, and great all around musicanship! After listening to this cd, I'm finding myself wanting to buy their live DVD. I'm looking forward to seeing what they come up with in the future. Buy it, turn it up, and enjoy...stay heavy!
Band geek likes this!!!!!! October 1, 2004 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
Hey they are awsome. Sounds like Evanescence stole some ideas from them... But WOW! They're from Finland and so is HIM but Nightwish is much better. There are strings and percussion and woodwinds galore in this album. If your a band geek i would recomend this album if you want to get back to some "real" music.
"Bless the child" is good it gave my friends the chills ;-).
"End of Hope" is definately one of my favorties
"Dead to the World" awsome keyboard parts and i hear a hint of keyboard percussion like xylophone maybe....
"Ever Dream" slow song perfect for a loved one...
"Slaying the Dreamer" Heavy one of my favorites :-D
"Forever yours" Beautiful vocals at first and a nice pan flute in the second half of the song .. very much a ballad ( in Band Geek opinion)
"Ocean Soul" i'm still trying to figure out what Ocean soul is... good song semi heavy good.
"Feel for you" i like this one... awsome string parts. I love Tarja's voice!!!!!
"Phantom of the Opera" Tarja could give Sarah Brightman a run for her money, though she doesn't hit the high C in the last quarter of the song but hey it's metal. Their rendition made my jaw drop and i had to wipe drool off my chin when i first heard it.
"Beauty of the Beast" I definately hear some Keyboard percussion... This is how i spend my time inbetween World History and College Pre-Calc and then Programming.
Hope this helps and i don't offend any one.
A good CD... with a solid 4 stars July 10, 2005 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I had just gotten Nightwish's first CD "Once" and I soon rushed out to get another by the band. I picked out Century Child and was not disappointed...
Bless the Child- 4/5: This song is a pretty good introduction track. There is a guy's voice in the beginning and end that adds some more character to the already beautiful music.
End of All Hope- 5/5: One of my favorite songs on the CD, this song continues directly off of Bless the Child with a really fast beat and interesting lyrics
Dead to the World- 5/5: This is also pretty fast paced with both Tarja and Marco singing in it. The tune is very catchy and the lyrics are also pretty good.
Ever Dream- 4/5: This song is a little slower than the others and seems to be more of a love song. Tarja's voice sounds very nice in this track and I like to listen to it over and over, not getting bored of it.
Slaying the Dreamer- 4/5: This song starts out pretty good, but I don't like the song at the end. It's like the band didn't know which direction they wanted to song to go in and they split it in half. Both Tarja and Marco sing in it.
Forever Yours- 3.5/5: For some reason starting at this song and through the next two, the three songs never caught on with me... Forever Yours is good and catchy but it never really captured my attension like the others did.
Ocean Soul- 3.5/5: I first I didn't like this song at all, but it eventually grew on me. The lyrics felt ackward with the music but once I listened to it a few times I got the beat better and the song wasn't as bad.
Feel For You- 4/5: I liked this song the best compared to the two previous. The lyrics were strange but I liked them. When Marco came in and began to sing, it added some more to the song as well.
The Phantom of the Opera- 5/5: I liked this more that the original. I wasn't really a fan of the Phantom of the Opera but when I heard this song, I was captivated. I ersonally think it sounds better than the original.
Beauty of the Beast- 5/5: This is undoubtedly my favorite song on the album. I normally don't like really long songs, but this one kept my attension the entire ten minutes. The lyrics and the music is wonderful, and the guy from the beginning in "Bless the Child" comes back for a few lines at the end of this song.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this CD and would recommend it to fans of Nightwish.
Get Nightwish CENTURY CHILD NOW!!! September 25, 2003 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
First of all... Nighwish is the best band ever!!! I will talk a little about their newest album CENTURY CHILD.... For me its their best ALBUM so far... you can see how much they have grown with the years , you can see a lot of maturity on the lyrics and everything.... its their most agressive album so far... also they has a new Bassist Marco Hietala who is one of the best male singers I ever heard!!! you know , 2 powerful vocalist on a band??? isnt that great?!??? damn...I loved Wishmaster , Oceanborn and Angel's fall first... but CENTURY CHILD for me its better in a lot of ways... the only bad thing about it , its that Tarja has toned down a lil bit , but it is ok because it fits with the lyrics.... there is NOT any changes between the import version of CC and the USA version of CC.... if you dont have it , go and GET IT NOW!!!!!
