2 out of 5 stars Dark Disco   March 25, 2005

The last two outings by the Cruxshadows are the goth equivalent of Gloria Gaynor and/or The Village People.
Why do they even have a guitarist? Can't hear it most of the time.
The drum beats are the same through most of the album.
Having lived in their home town and attended college with Rogue and have run in the same circles with him I can say that he is egomaniacal and a control freak. The real reason he lost the only good guitarist in the band (Kevin) is because Kevin liked to have a beer after gigs (Rogue doesn't drink alcohol or caffeine). Just a beer. Rogue would freak.
I WILL give Rogue credit for being a very driven individual. He built that band up from nothing and pretty much runs the business side as well as the creative side. But make no mistake, the other band members are hired guns. Cruxshadows is Rogue and only Rogue.
If you are a fan of this music I would recommend The Last Dance.
They actually have guys that play instruments and not tons of programming with synths.

Having been a cxs fan for quite awhile I was excited when I heard the announcement of the release of this cd. Though it had arrived late, I popped it into my cd player and began listening. The listener is instantly transported into the cruxshadow's own little world from the second it begins. I've always loved the way they put the sounds together to make something incredible and new each song. There is much to be heard and absorbed from this CD-- a definate strong addition to your collection, and a good one for first-timers as well.

What can I say! The group just totally says it all with not just the words to thier songs but the music as well! One song will send my inner soul on a peaceful journey another will send it dancing into the Ether! Rouge's haunting voice and the bands mezmerizing harmony with each other makes this band one that I will follow for years to come! Keep up the good work and I cant wait to see you all again this year!

5 out of 5 stars The best album ever....   January 18, 2004

Ethernaut is by far the best album I've bought for years. Rachel's eerie violin/keyboard backed by the dramatic and unusually structured beats of Chris's synths gave me chills. Everything is topped off with Stacey's seductive and aggressive guitar and Rogue's beautiful, moving vocals. Each song on Ethernaut is so good, it's impossible for me to pick the best song. Although unquestionably dark, the Cruxshadows have continued with their genre blending, so Ethernaut doesn't fit into one catagory. And that's just what the music is like: flowing yet crunchy, ansty but romantic, beautiful yet sad. Rogue's presence through his vocals is so strong, it feels like he is singing directly to you. The sound feels much clearer and polished then their previous releases, the emotion a bit more direct. I can't think of anything wrong with this album. I say if you don't own it already, you have to buy it and support this incredible band. If you DO own it, then stop reading this and write your own review!

Looking forward to the next album-

Alyson

Giant growl of rage at everyong who reviews this album poorly on the basis that it isn't "gothic" enough. I don't remember the Cruxshadows ever claiming to be "gothic." Rogue never signed any pact saying he'd be true to any "gothic" creed when creating his art, nor I doubt, did any of the other members of this AMAZING band. There is no defined label I would put on the Cruxshadows, they are just the Cruxshadows, they have established their own unique and inspired sound that is all their very own. Ethernaut has fully surpassed everything they've done so far. The sound quality is fantastic, so many levels and layers and hours of time have gone into each and every song, and the lyrics are amazing as always. How anyone could listen to Cassandra or Winterborn and feel bored rather than inspired is beyond me. Listen to the sample tracks, they speak for themselves!
