Needs Work! January 28, 2007 3 out of 31 found this review helpful
This humble writer likes the Cruxshadows. Danceable, with catchy lyrics and a wonderful live show, she often wonders why this band hasn't made the mainstream.
That being said....
She wishes the good songs, like "Sophia" and "Windbringer" weren't so long. Good as they may be, not everyone as the patience to listen to a five or six-minute song, which is how long on average most of their songs are.
Also, this humble writer feels that Rogue should stop using mythological references in his songs. Not everyone unfamilliar with who Dido is, for example, wishes to have to buy a copy of Bullfinch's Mythology and page through it everytime they don't get it.
Some of the songs, also, like "Defender" were so stupid that this writer had to skip them halfway. There are just some songs that Rogue's Peter Murphyesque aren't suited for.
All in all, not a bad album, but not one this humble writer would want to listen to again.
I expected better June 24, 2007 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Let me begin this by saying that I love the Cruxshadows. I have seen them in concert twice and own all their albums. I can't imagine the band creating anything truly bad. However, I expected better from them. Don't think that I'm one of the fans who expects their favorite band to never change its sound. Previously, each of their releases just got better and better, evolving to greater perfection. Dreamcypher isn't a bad album, but in my opinion, it isn't nearly as good as even Mystery of the Whisper. It is blown away by both Wishfire and Ethernaut.
One of the main areas in which this album is lacking is Rachel's violin. Yes, it is present, but doesn't play nearly as prominent a role as in their past albums. Instead, her contributions are largely overshadowed by a more heavy emphasis on the electronic aspects of the music. Rachel's violin is one of the signature aspects of the band that sets it apart from the others. Without it, the Cruxshadows sounds much like a lot of other good goth bands, but not so distinctive.
The other area of disappointment was that so many of the songs were similar in tone and tempo. In their previous albums, there were a variety of song styles - driving, danceable songs, slower, more contemplative songs, soft, sad songs, and so on. In this album, the band seems to be going almost entirely towards dance. While I love it when they do songs like that, I want variety in an album as well. There are a couple of less dance-oriented songs ("Sleepwalking," "Memorare" and "Kisses 3"), but in general I didn't feel that the album was very balanced in this regard, or that the non-dance songs were very strong.
It's also true that most of the songs on this album are longer on average. I don't think this is a bad thing in general, though there are a few songs that I didn't think were good enough to really warrant the length given to them. My attention span is long enough that I don't see it as a real problem, though.
Despite the drawbacks mentioned, the album isn't terrible. I suppose an entire album could potentially be carried by Rogue's charisma alone, and his singing is pretty strong and passionate on this album. In my opinion, the highlights are "Perfect" and "Eye of the Storm." Rogue really shines in these songs, and I find their musical composition and lyrics to be quite excellent.
While it is true that this album is heavy on mythological references, I disagree with the reviewer that sees this as a bad thing. They are more prevalent in this album than previous releases, but mythological themes have always been present in the Cruxshadows' music. I don't think a band should have to dumb its lyrics down for the public. Even if you're not familiar with the myth being referenced, the basic idea of the song is usually still clear (i.e. whether it's a love song, a song about a war or whatever else).
In general, none of the songs on this album were specifically below the average standard of the band, but I don't feel that put together, they made a good album. If any of these songs had been mixed with a greater variety of non-dance tracks, and songs with more a little of Rachel's violin, I would have been satisfied with this release. I just feel that it was dance-heavy and unbalanced, which ended up making much of the album sound the same. Every song would have been much more distinctive if it had been accompanied by more variety as their previous releases have been.
Dreamcypher - Cruxshadows March 16, 2007 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I love this CD all of the songs appeal to me in their own ways, if you have ever listened to a Cruxshadows song and liked it there is a good chance that you will like em all.
Album begins on Track 6 March 18, 2007 2 out of 14 found this review helpful
Honestly, if tracks 1-5 had been scrapped in the studio, this album would not have been hurt in the slightest.
