5 out of 5 stars WOW - From not a goth metal rocker   May 30, 2007
3 out of 3 found this review helpful

For quite a while I had been searching for this kind of music, my first experiences were with Nightwish and Evanescense and I really think that Within Temptation tops them all!

I do not know why this kind of music is not aired in the radio or on TV, it is surely far, far better than the garbage we watch and everyday from teeny bands that beleive they are rockers.

I have only listened to this record once, but so far the best songs are: The Howling, What have you done, Frozen and All I need (a very pop-style song that could hit high on the charts if it had a chance).

Finally, if you like the combination of sexy, hipnotizing and scary female vocals, buy this record.

When I first heard 'What Have You Done,' I wasn't sure I'd be into the new CD. I LOVE Within Temptation, and to me that wasn't WT. But after hearing the entire CD several times over (because I couldn't stop listening to it)...I have to say it's AMAZING! HIGHLY recommended. Whether you're a first time listener or a long-time WT fan.

5 out of 5 stars A whole Different take on Within Temptation   March 20, 2007

Ok, so ill be the first to admit it, Mother Earth did not have the same impression on me ( gasp!!) that " Silent Force " or The Heart of Everything has. Mother Earth is a beautiful album no doubt, but i feel this band took a different turn in their career when the Silent Force hit the mainstream, as it did in fact hit #1 on almost every European chart. Silent Force is a very complete album from beginning to end, with stories and epics. It by far is one of my favorite albums in the entire orchestrial metal/goth genre.

Then WT comes out with The Heart of Everything. IMO, a rather large turn in sound, and im not sure its experimental or permanent for them. Its heavier, which was my first impression. Not only that, the over the top epic orchestrial power hits are toned down for me, more rock oriented. Now, thats not to say it isnt a beautifully sung or written album, some of the interludes are straight off of Silent Force, which is more of an established sound for WT. To sum it up, The Heart of Everything is a different animal than anything else by WT, and i think any fan of this genre could enjoy this album, from people who are new to WT to veterans who have been following the band since the later 90s.

I agree with other people and saying the " what have you done " is different and a little odd on this album. This would technically be the first duet with a male ive seen Sharon do. I dont agree it should be the single on the album, nor should it be track #2, but it is a pretty strong track, albeit a little too evanescence-esque.

My favs on the album owuld have to be the title track, " forgiven", and probably " Hand of Sorrow ". Dont get me wrong, id feel fine letting the album spin from beginning to end, but i think " Final Destination " could easily be omited off without any crying about it.

My only gripe is that this album is a bit too short. some bands can pull off 11 tracks and make it sound complete. to me, a few more standout tracks would be welcome, and would put this album in the awesome category. It has been Three years after all. Its gonna take alot to oust " the silent Force " from my fav orchestrial metal album list, but this album definetly can hold its own.

If you are thinking of picking this up as your first WT album, go for it. The album stands on its own fantastically, and is a great representation of what i think WT does best, represent itself as a staple in goth/orchestrial metal. Two thumbs up.

5 out of 5 stars This cd has more to offer...   March 26, 2007

Silent Force was a good cd. However, Sharon did little to change up her voice from song to song which made it difficult to listen to the cd all the way through without getting bored. The Heart of Everything has more variety with the vocals, is a bit heavier on some songs, and the lyrics are certainly darker. I was afraid that I was going to be wasting my money on this purchase but was pleasantly surprised to be proven wrong.

This is yet another great album from Within Temptation! Even though I don't like this album as much as the Silent Force, I still give it a five star review.
The music is heavier than both The Silent Force and Mother Earth, but it is still melodic.
My favorite songs are the following: Our Solemn Hour, The Truth Beneath The Rose, Frozen, and The Howling. If you are thinking about buying this album, do it, you will be happy you did!
