3 out of 5 stars New Nickelback?!! Nope, just Theory of a Deadman   April 2, 2008
2 out of 2 found this review helpful

I heard "So Happy" on the radio and thought it was either Nickelback or Puddle of Mudd. It turns out to be a new single from Theory of a Deadman. This band has matured over the years musically, but still takes its songwriting style and vocal arrangements directly from Nickelback. Vocally, Tyler Connolly has really come a long way. I would say that lyrically they surpass Nickelback by offering songs of more substance and maturity in their writing. Musically there are a lot of similarities to Nickelback, and I mean A LOT! You could put Chad Kroger in as a vocalist and you would think it was a new album from NB. The production quality is of excellent quality and kudos to Howard Benson. You can hear a lot of Seether and Daughtry (which he also produced) in the music. This isn't a bad thing if you enjoy that sound, its just not very original. Who knows, stick with the sound you know sells.

The Songs:

1. So Happy: A rocking tune similar to Puddle of Mudd/Nickelback
2. By The Way: A Little Seether here, sort of slow. Good song.
3. Got It Made: Another rocker, steady, fast - could be a single
4. Not Meant To Be: I swear, does Nickelback sell songs to bands?
5. Crutch: Getting heavier
6. All or Nothing - Could have been called "How You Remind Me Part 2"
7. Heaven (Little By Little): Slow ballad. Highlights vocals. Nice.
8. Bad Girlfriend: Nothing special here. Sounds like they ripped off the Cult on the guitar.
9. Hate My Life: Lets take NB's Rockstar and change the lyrics. Hated it.
10. Little Smirk: Getting bored of the CD now.
11. End Of The Summer: Another nice ballad.
12. Wait For Me: What?? Another ballad. Slower.
13. Sacrifice: End of the CD, and it appears the band has run out of ideas, its all starting to sound the same.

Summary: Overall a great sounding CD, production value is really up there. Lyrics are good, mature. Songwriting from music point of view, gets repetitive, sounds A LOT like Nickelback. Hints of Seether in there.

Buy it, worth listening to, and most of all, doesn't sound like all the EMO/Screamo music out there and is a breath of fresh air to see that a band, though ripping off others somewhat, can come out with something somewhat original.

I agree with one of the other reviews in that all the songs on this CD are good!! No fillers! Great rock band with a unique sound of their own. My best music buy this year so far.

Change your name to Theroy of A Nickleback. A cheap rip off of a good talented band. Nuff said.

1 out of 5 stars Holy Sh@t! What a blatant ripoff!   September 17, 2008

I dare anyone to listen to TOAD's "Bad Girlfriend" and The Cult's "Fire Woman" and tell me that's not a rip-off. I hope The Cult takes TOAD to the cleaners.

5 out of 5 stars Theory Rocks Hard!!!   April 4, 2008

Excellent follow-up to their Sophomore Album, Gasoline...they are growing as a band, evidence by the cleaner sound. I like almost every song on this album and saw them in concert in March - they sound better live!!! Other than rocking hard I do not know why people say they sound like Nickelback...if that is the case you are not doing Theory and Nickelback justice. If you are a Theory or Nickelback fan, this is a must own! Favorite Song: Bad Girlfriend
