4 out of 5 stars Slips between Commercial and Alternative   May 24, 2008

This band has been through a lot over the years, by switching record companies, losing an important member and playing show after show but they've maintained enough to release this seventh album. The first track is definitely Sevendust, but when vocalist Lajon Witherspoon is heard it changes things. His voice doesn't quite fit with the music. being heavy metal due to it's more soulful sound.

Sevendust now kinda straddle between being commercial/mainstream and more underground/alternative metal. The album starts with the song "Inside" that hits you with a hard force then is followed by "Enough" which has a long instrumental intro (several songs on the album do) that builds tension then ends on a low riff side of things. What makes Sevendust standout though is their way of mixing Witherspoon's vocals (never going to the screeching mode) with the hard-driving guitars. His voice is full of emotion, which is heard on the track "The Past"(a more ballad type of song). With that said, in my opinion, none of the songs on Chapter VII are stand out hits like those from past albums , but it's still very decent. Not quite five stars though.

5 out of 5 stars Chapter VII...   September 2, 2008

The seventh outing by Sevendust was out within a year since their last one. I have been a fan of the band ever since i heard Black and own that album. I wasn't thrilled with the stuff that came out in between Home and Alpha. This album however seriously got my attention. Have been playing it non stop since i got it. It is a more mature, experimental Sevendust. True that their sound has evolved but none of it points in a direction where they've totally mellowed down or anything. The album, simply out, rocks... and rocks hard. From the first track on its one rocky ride. Sevendust have moved in the right direction... kept it heavy.. but at the same time experimented well. This is a good album i highly recommend. Morgan Rose is a great drummer. Stand out tracks include - Inside, Prodigal Son, Scape goat, Lifeless, Contradiction.

I love this band and this new album is amazing!! I've had the opportunity to see these guys live, meet them a few times, and own every album! I think this is probably the best album since 'Animosity'! Although it's too bad Sonny Mayo departed as soon as the album was completed, at the same time, it's good to see Clint back in the lineup! These guys NEVER dissapoint me!!

5 out of 5 stars Best of the Sonny Mayo Era   April 1, 2008
Just as the third album of the Clint Lowery era saw Sevendust at their strongest with ANIMOSITY, three albums into their new (and now abruptly ended) era with CHAPTER VII: HOPE AND SORROW, Sevendust find themselves sounding more comfortable than ever. While ALHPA was heavy and had great riffs, it was for the most part one-dimensional. That's not a bad thing, if that's what you like Sevendust for. But for me, I like when Sevendust is epic, which they were on ANIMOSITY and are now once again on this effort. I say epic, because melodic might make one think of SEASONS, but this album has much thicker textures than SEASONS and definitely comes off much heavier than SEASONS and most of NEXT. If you like your Sevendust with orchestral flourishes, progressive tinges, harmonized vocals, moderate amounts of Morgan screaming (but much less than on ALPHA), and huge production and emotion, this will rank among your favorite Sevendust albums, and perhaps be your favorite.

And the song "Hope" has the most brutally intense chorus of Sevendust's career to date as far as I'm concerned, and ranks up with (and above in some cases) "Trust," "Denial," "Waffle," "Xmas Day," "Hero," "Disgrace," and "Black" among my favorite Sevendust songs. Not to mention that Mark Tremonti rips a solo in the bridge, and the orchestra overlayed with the Sevendust riffs sounds amazing.

So go out and support the boys that have brought us some great music, and buy this record this week, and bolster their first week sales. This is the album that SHOULD make them legendary. It's up to us to get it off to a good start. They deserve it after all these years of serving us.
