3 out of 5 stars Average album from P.O.D. - maybe 3.5 stars   April 15, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

The boys from San Diego return after a little over 2 years with their original 4 man group and their 7th album. When I finally got to listen to this album, I was a little disappointed. This is the 5th album of theirs I have (everyone since "Fundamental Elements of Southtown"), and this is probably my least favorite of the 5. Of the 12 songs on here, I'd say only about 5 are good (and they happen to be 5 of the first 6 songs), with none of them being great, and the other 7 are average. The tempo is much slower than the majority of their albums and very few of the songs are upbeat and party type tracks. I'd probably pass this one by unless you happen to be a huge fan.

#1 - 9 (Upbeat song)
#2 - 9
#3 - 8
#4 - 7.5
#5 - 8.5 (f. Mike Muir)

3 out of 5 stars not the old P.O.D. anymore..   September 12, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

Hi. I preordered this album, and I thought I would get something similar to what P.O.D. used to be before Truby came in.
I got a little dissapointed.

Here I'm not gonna talk about the lyrics, cause I'm a musician, and the first thing that I notice in an album is the musical part.

Please, with the 3 stars don't get me wrong. It's probably not a bad album, it has some good songs, and a lot of them are really enjoyable, there's "Shine With Me", "Condescending", "Addicted", and some others that people like, and I have to say, those are actually good songs.

The 3 stars are simply because, it's probably good music, but IT'S NOT P.O.D.

I expected some more heavier stuff, more clean effects and riffs from Marcos, and I expected the CD to be musically a little more complex. It's not what you'll find here. Don't expect the old P.O.D., cause i have to say, the old P.O.D. is gone, and I can talk this way cause I've been a fan since Southtown, and the older albums were good as well, I've listened to them all. Even with Truby in Testify, songs like "Roots In Stereo", "Lights Out" and "Strength Of My Life", and if we go back to "Satellite", "Alive", "The Messenger", "Southtown", "Rock The Party"...... THAT'S the kind of sound I'm expecting from P.O.D.

There's only one song that I really like on this album, and it's "Tell Me Why", it's an acoustic, but beautiful song, and I'm glad I have it with me. I don't remember any acoustic song previously released by P.O.D., not counting Guitarras de Amor, or Eternal, I'm talkin about songs with lyrics.

Give the CD a try, you'll probably enjoy it. But don't expect the old P.O.D.

4 out of 5 stars Not sloppy, just fun!   April 9, 1999
Okay, the previous reviewer is entitled to his opinion, but this is one of my favourite CD's. The whole thing has a loose, relaxed feel, and there are some excellent songs, such as "Favourite Girl" and "The Refuge Tree".

I like Tim Finn's work, and Hothouse Flowers, but I'm mostly an Andy White fan (a rare breed). Maybe Andy's quirkiness takes some getting used to. But I think it's worth the effort. He's brilliant!

I've also seen ALT live and I'd rate that as a five-star performance for the great energy and wonderful music. But I'll just give them four stars for this recording. It catches most (but not quite all) of their magic. I'm looking forward to hearing more from them.

1 out of 5 stars Maybe it sounds good if you're drunk and/or stoned?   August 17, 2005

On paper or in theory Alt probably sounded like a sound concept, Tim Finn (ex-Split Enz, Crowded House) along with other notable Australian musicians. The end result is too many chefs and not enough broth as this stew is pretty thin and not very tasty. On the whole it sounds like these songs were cobbled together bits hastily assembled over too many drinks and I've heard drunks singing karaoke that were more enjoyable and memorable than anything here. This sounds like it was recorded in one take on a crappy tape recorder while they were all drunk, not in tune or in key. The sound is very muddled and the singing is off-key at times and mumbled so as to render everything slight and confusing. For all the quality work these individuals have done over the years it's astonishing they would put out such crap as this. There's literally nothing I can say to recommend this for any reason. As a fan of Tim Finn, Crowded House, Finn Brothers, and Split Enz I had high hopes for this and they were dashed completely. I'd sell it here if I'd get anything for it. At $1.00 (USD) it's WAY overpriced! Utter rubbish!

5 out of 5 stars Not glossy, but glorious   March 16, 2007
This album certainly divides people. I think it's superb. I bought it because I'm a fan of the Finns, but the album is its own entity. I've since bought a second copy to give as a gift to a friend, who also loves it. It's a great shame these guys never did anything further together.

Many tracks are very beautiful -- especially 'I Decided to Fly' (I'm in full agreement with the earlier reviewer on that one), but also 'The Refuge Tree', 'Favourite Girl' and 'The Day You Were Born'.

Further, the album is really not as sloppy as some reviewers here manage to imply -- from what they say, you'd think you'd be able to hear the band constantly slurping their beers!
