5 out of 5 stars Ghosts is an instrumental delight   March 3, 2008

My favorite NIN tracks are usually the moody instrumentals, so this new album is a treat for the ears. After completing the download, I used the songs as background music to set a mood while working, as I'm sure many listeners will do for years to come.

Ghosts I-IV reminds me of Radiohead's OK Computer in the same sense that you can let it play while your mind wanders to other things besides the music itself. When you're a writer, most of the time music can be too great a distraction to concentrate on what you are trying to do, but not with this album. For the casual listener, this is the kind of album that lets you close your eyes and melt into your favorite recliner to chill out after a long day.

Several of the tracks have a slow pace or a movie soundtrack quality, which is no surprise considering Reznor's past work contributing music to films like Seven and Lost Highway.

In theory, I love the idea of an all instrumental Nine Inch Nails album. Trent Reznor's tortured and perpetually adolescent lyrics don't have the same effect on me that they had when when I was 13 or 14. They used to scare the crap out of me, but now they seem more childish every day.

However, Reznor always makes fascinating musical backdrops. Reznor's music is challenging and accesible at the same time. I love his layered and meticulous production. The music on Ghosts I-IV is almost like a sampler of the various musical styles that he's been through. You have songs that sound like The Fragile, songs that sound like Year Zero, and songs that sound like With Teeth. It all features Reznor's typical deft production, except it has more of an ambient slant.

So Ghosts I-IV is Reznor's version of Music for Airports. Having listened to this album closely as well as using it as background music while i'm working, i've got to say it functions better as background music. Just like Music for Airports is suspose to be the musical equivilent of art hanging on the wall, Ghosts I-IV functions in much the same way. I wish a close listen was more rewarding, but Ghosts just doesn't bear out close examination.

I have to comment on the distribution, which takes the In Rainbows model to the next step. Instead of paying what you want and getting some low quality MP3s, Ghosts is avaliable at different price levels and the MP3 quality is much better. You can also get it lossless format. This is the future of musical distribution.

After getting sober, Reznor has either rediscovered his ambition or is bored as hell, because this is his second album in as many years, opposed to twice a decade releases fans have had to endure in the past. The packaging on the deluxe editions is quite lovely, and the slide show and booklet that come with the download are interesting, especially if you're a fan of musical gear.

Ghosts I-IV will definitely please fans of Nine Inch Nails but isn't going to win over any new converts. It's an interesting experiment, both musically and in marketing.

nine inch nails: ghostsI-IV--the story behind the album (edited for content)

Trent Reznor, 43, wearing an all black jumpsuit like 2 piece with patterns on it a la Elvis, scowling, eating a chocolate strawberry, enters a room straight out of the crate & barrel catalog. there are several chocolate fountains and plates of fruit around the place and the sound of several small internal combustion engines. Reznor's belly hangs out from under his shirt. He picks up a cordless phone and dials while dipping a piece of pineapple into a chocolate fountain and then taking a bite.

Reznor: Hey Tommy, how's it going?

(VO from phone): Who is this?

Reznor: Its me, Trent. (After a moment) Trent Reznor.

Tommy: Oh, Trent. Long time no hear. What's going on, buddy?

Reznor: I'm in a bit of a fix, Tommy. I've got a huge bill to pay and I need to come up with some money. (Reznor dips a piece of apple into one of the chocolate fountains).

Tommy: Bill? What bill? Don't you already have tons of money?

Trent: I do, but running all these chocolate fountains is getting really expensive. (Dips a piece of pear into a chocolate fountain). And with the price of fruit these days, the sub prime mess, the credit crunch and the fact that those stingy jerks in the federal government didn't send me a $600 check, well . . .

Tommy: What the heck are you talking about? What chocolate fountains?

Trent: The ones in my house. The special order ones that I run on gasoline. Remember.

Tommy: I thought that was a joke. You ordered hundreds of those.

Trent: 4,764 to be exact.

Tommy: Gee whiz, Trent?!? What the heck, man?

Trent: (Dipping a piece of orange into a chocolate fountain and biting it) Its a big house, dude. Anyway, I need some cash. Any ideas.

Tommy: You could release a new album.

Trent: Nah, sounds like work.

Tommy: What are you talking about, work? You wrote and recorded most of "The Fragile" during a 2 week bender in Tijuana where you refused to leave that place with the donkey show. I think there's actually a sample of you taking a piss on that recording.

Trent: Hmmm, you do have a point. But still, I can't afford a bender in Tijuana right now. And the airlines are terrible. I gotta come up with something more affordable.

Tommy: Hmmmm. . . .well here's an idea. Take a casio into the bathroom with you every time you take a dump and just play some stuff and record it.

Trent: Hmmm, that's not a bad idea. . . . (picks up a cherry, dips it into a fountain and starts eating it, spits out the seed). I'm gonna get started right now.

Tommy: Should I book some studio time?

Trent: No, I mean I'm gonna go take a crap.

Cut to black, same room, 1 week later. Trent's on the phone. He is eating a peach that has been dipped in chocolate.

Trent: Tommy, that was a great idea about playing the casio on the crapper. I got 2 whole discs done? 36 Tracks!

Tommy: Gee whiz, Trent, how the heck did you get that much done? Another double album?

Trent: Well, I was thinking about Tijuana, so I went to this local mexican joint, and, well, lets just say I got a little case of Montezuma's revenge.

Tommy: Ohhh, man, I don't want to know. Just send it over.

Trent: By the way, Tommy, I didn't sing on any of it.

Tommy: What do you mean?

Trent: (Dipping a piece of plum into a chocolate fountain) Well, I couldn't use the mic on account of I was taking all these craps and farting a lot and I didn't want to record that, so its all just me playing a casio.

Tommy: Well i guess it doesn't matter. People will buy any piece of junk with your name on it.

Trent: Damn skippy.

Fade to black.

Every cell in my body exploded when I learned about the release of this album tonight. The NIN site was completely overloaded with traffic so cheers to Amazon for being available to provide this album for us at blazing speed! As for the album I completely dig it in every way, it's quite a trip to sit back and listen to. 36 masterful tracks for $5 is one hell of an offer, and I hope with this Trent will set the trend for the music industry and how such work is distributed. As for me, I'll be purchasing the hard-copy when it's available in April.

Buy this album, support independent artists.

I take it back. Although short and sweet, many of these tracks are already beginning to stick in my head. The only problem is remembering what number coincides with what music. This may not be a "CD", but it's hella handful of music. No groundbreaking radio hits but a few hours of cutting floor gold that could have been their own disks. Can't beat $5 bucks to download.
