5 out of 5 stars stark and beautiful   June 20, 2001

Bauhaus' first 4 albums are all great, but especially this one. The '98 reissue includes singles not available on the original lp, so get it if you can. Highly recommended for fans of Joy Division or early Cure.

5 out of 5 stars C'mon. They were great.   March 5, 2003

A lot of people I've spoken to, including snotty gother-than-thou elitists, say that the Sisters were brilliant and Bauhaus [was not]. I don't understand these people. Yes, I do love the Sisters very much. But I have a stronger connection to Bauhaus for some reason. I personally think they were more interesting, there was more of a rich, theatrical sense to them. This is my favorite Bauhaus album, containing the classics "Double Dare" and "In The Flat Field". Really, if chills don't run down your spine when you hear the fuzzy guitars of "Double Dare", there's something wrong with you.

4 out of 5 stars Black hymns of squealing nonsense.   September 12, 2003

I love it. I do admit, though, that if I were to sit down and listen to this album expecting any profound technical ability (from ANY of the members), this album would be spear-tackled into the nearest bin.

It's all punk in attitude. None of these men care. There is no convention here. They just churn out dark squealy little detuned hymns about vampires, dancing, killing, hair of dogs etc to inspire the black masses of the early 80's. It doesn't sound at all scary, angsty or foreboding. I find myself laughing at this music more often than not. Some of those guitar lines...seriously....they have to be mistakes! I mean, who TRIES to play like that????

Yuck.

I love it. Buy it. Or steal it. GO!

5 out of 5 stars The first goth album   September 19, 2003

I feel honored to even review this album.

This was one of my first goth CDs when I first got into goth at 15 or 14 I can't really remember, anyway it blew me away instantly. Each song stands on its own and Peter Murphy's voice is out standing. If you are just getting into the goth subculture I would buy this album first. Ignore Marilyn Manson, Slipknot, and that EBM stuff. BUY THIS ALBUM. Make it your first goth album you won't regret it.

4 out of 5 stars Great first album, probably their best effort.   January 30, 2005

Although the tracklisting is similar in many places to the "Singles Vol. 1" album, I'd choose this one between the two. You get all the memorable songs from that disc (outside of Bela Lugosi's Dead, which is probably their most well known song).

I'd just ignore the Cure-fanboyish rant from "whatever (lost)" below. The Cure and Joy Division are very respectable bands but Bauhaus deserves just as much credit as any band for moving this "style" ahead. Just because some simpler brains won't be able to tolerate something beyond your standard oh-so-glum goth stuff from those other two aformentioned bands doesn't mean Bauhaus isn't outstanding. Just because Bauhaus throws in a few curveballs here and there doesn't mean they're any less respectable or less worthy of their lofty status among fans.
