Their best record July 3, 1998 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
While Bauhaus' other records were often pretentious and uneven, this is one of the best gothic records ever. It is dark and spooky, but not too artsy. The lyrics are beautiful and deal with loneliness and ennui. My favorite tracks are the strong title track "In the flat field", the haunting "Nerves" with a piano in the backround of heavy guitars and "Crowds".

I think this is the best album I've ever heard! everyhing about it is perfect. the songwriting, that spectacular 'notchy'guitar sound, Peter Murphy's vocal slay me everytime. I only recently began listening to Bauhaus and I wonder why I waited so darn long. A MUST HAVE

For die-hard fans or anyone who wants a Bauhaus sampler September 11, 1998 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Most of the songs are identical to the ones on the other albums, so this is either an album for the fan who wants everything or this one makes a good introduction to early Bauhaus for someone who's not looking to buy a lot of albums. Solid general Bauhaus (with the lyrics!) without the playful side that came out of the later albums.

That's just the way it is. This is without a doubt the best example of what Bauhaus was all about.
