Good music - Defective CD February 17, 2004 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
I would rate this collection as very good, except for some serious reservations regarding the CD quality. In terms of the tunes, the inclusion of shortened radio edits of songs like "Rio" is ultimatley balanced out by inclusion of versions of "The Reflex" and "Ordinary World" that are actually superior to the original album versions. So, no big problems then with the song selection. What is TOTALLY pathetic about this CD is its manufacturing - it only plays correctly thru to the end on certain CD players. I'm on my second copy of it already and it has the exact same problem as the first one did... "Come Undone" (the last song) skips so badly on most CD players that it's barely listenable. They cut it way too close in terms of time/data limits on this disc; there is apparently more music on here than a (mass produced) CD is meant to hold - consequently the CD skips. Great music. Crap manufacturing.
Great '80's (and some '90's) rock and dance-pop! January 31, 2000 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
I bought this CD at a Dixon's in Heathrow Airport in London, mostly on an employee's recommendation. He even asked me while I was looking at it if I liked '80's music, and I had to answer "Well, yes, I suppose I do." Anyway, there sure is a lot of quality material on this collection, which could have been made a little better if the very funky "Too Much Information" from 1993 and the equally funky "White Lines" remake from 1995 had also been included. However, I still like the majority of the selected songs, including "Is There Something I Should Know?", "The Reflex", "Save A Prayer", "Rio", "Hungry Like The Wolf", "Girls On Film", "Planet Earth", "New Moon On Monday", "Wild Boys", "Notorious", "I Don't Want Your Love", "All She Wants Is", and especially the 1997 dance-pop tune "Electric Barberella", done because that's where this group got their name from, the 1968 Jane Fonda movie. So, for the ones out there who still appreciate the classic '80's sounds, pick this cool compilation up soon. It'll be great, be sure of that!
THE GREATEST!!! May 4, 2003 8 out of 10 found this review helpful
the BEST band ever. Why? because if you really think about it-no one has EVER sounded like Duran Duran or even come close. Without a doubt, the most original band, ever! They wrote the catchiest songs, produced the best albums (does anyone know of any DD albums that are only good for their singles? - NO.)were the trendiest dudes in their day and still managed to survive the 80's. This collection is like a Bible for music lovers. Full of classics and there could have been more, had this been a double album. From their debut of "planet Earth" to the sexy "Union Of the Snake" and including Duran's most underrated single "I dont want your love". If you dont have this-get it. and catch up on old memories (because they will come back with these songs)and get ready for the reuinion tour and album. Younger people need to get this cd and familiarize themselves with Britain's greatest export. This cd includes MTV's first ever banned video,"Girls on Film", the best Bond Theme ever-"A View To A Kill" and one of the most beautifal ballads ever-"Save a Prayer"
Bastards!! October 29, 2004 8 out of 15 found this review helpful
I can deal with this album for the most part and I think they picked a fan-worthy ensemble of songs... HOWEVER - why in the hell would you use the cut radio version of songs on a "Best Of" CD!?!!!!??? I was pissed. For "Rio" and "Ordinary World" I ended up having to download them so that I could enjoy the sax solo and extended guitar solo from OW. That pretty much destroyed the album for me, but that's the way it goes, I guess.
80's synth-rock comes alive! April 2, 2002 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
Come with me and take a journey back in time to when great music ruled the air-waves. This is synth-pop rock at it's finest, this is without a doubt a true greatest hits collection. A complete retrospective that covers all of their hits. If you remember the 80's, these tracks should be instantly recognizable. 'Hungry Like The Wolf', 'The Reflex', 'A View To A Kill', 'Notorious', 'Wild Boys', 'Union Of The Snake', 'New Moon On Monday', 'Is There Something I Should Know', & 'Rio' are here. The early 90's comeback hits are also here: 'Come Undone' and 'Ordinary World', as well as the '97 hit 'Electric Barbarella'. I can listen to all 19 songs on this CD and rarely skip a track. Brings back some great memories from growing up in the 80's listening to the radio and watching MTV(when MTV actually played VIDEOS). Grab this one and enjoy great 80's music. ROCK ON!
