an album not to forget... July 13, 2005 in my opinion, this album "Arcane Rain Fell" is the most true to doom metal i have ever heard. the music is depressing, and very vengeful, as are the lyrics. the music is very instrumental and not boring to listen to. the lyrics are truly meaningful and wonderful, with just a little bit of old english thrown in, just a little bit (like the lovely thy's and becomeths). the growls by Anders Jacobbson are AMAZING (he is personally my favorite vocalist). i have never heard someone growl so well, that it seems like he is actually depressed and really is screaming like an angry vengeful person would. another plus for the growls is that it is clear and not forced (Anders voice is truly wonderful). DRACONIAN is the best true-to-doom metal band out there... give them a try, visit their website, you will not be disappointed... this is my favorite doom metal band out there. I cannot say which bands are similar to DRACONIAN, simply because the so-called "doom" metal bands are completely off. No, Draconian is not like Tristania. Draconian makes doom music, TRISTANIA "Widows Weeds" makes gothic music. but anyway.... if you like TRISTANIA, give Draconian a try. hopefully you will have made the right choice... Besides DRACONIAN my other favorite true-to-doom metal is THE SHAPE OF DESPAIR (very depressing and slow funeral doom).
Wonderful April 18, 2008 After reading all the positive things that people had to say about Draconian and this album in particular, I decided that it was high time I too gave them a listen. This is the sort of album that makes you feel good - not in a sense that you'll want to go skipping down the street handing out candy, but rather in the sense of giving you that pensive contentedness that is so much needed after a long, stressful day. In essence, it is the sort of album that demands the listener's attention from beginning to end - and a magnificent album it is. Before reaching my final verdict, I had to give it several listens: upon the third, I got chills down my spine, and concluded that all the positive things I had hitherto heard about Draconian were entierly warrented.
Right from the opening sounds of rain and thunder it is clear that 'Arcane Rain Fell' is going to be an inveritable magun opus of doom metal. It would be impossible for me to single out any one track as being my favourite, as they are all quite exceptional, but especial mention should go, nevertheless, to the breath-taking fifteen-minute closer 'Death, Come Near Me', which has one of the greatest melodies I have ever heard. The instrumentation and the vocal preformances throughout the album are also outstanding. Anders Jacobsson has an unusualy clear, understandable death-growl, which is always a plus for anybody who is at all interested in what-the-heck a band is actually saying. And Draconian, indeed, are worth listening to; some of the lyrics here are worthy of another star in themselves. Lisa Johansson too, provides that essential melodic touch with her vocals, which compliment Anders' growls as well as can be desired.
This is the first album I have purchased by Draconian, but I'll certainly be putting the rest of them on my birthday wishlist. I thoroughly recommend 'Arcane Rain Fell' to anybody who considers themselves a fan of gothic/doom metal, or anybody with an appreciation for fine music, and a desire to expand their horizons.
Draconian first time listener June 1, 2008 I had never heard this band before, but having listened to the previews I decided to purchase the CD. I was not dissapointed. If you like this genre of music, you are really going to enjoy Draconian. I highly recommend this CD to anybody looking for good music.
Excellent gothic metal September 11, 2008 First of all, the album cover is gray, so it gets an automatic 3 stars. However, the last two stars are definitely earned. I got this in the mail and have listened to it like 9 times in a row! It's that excellent.
Is it hokey? Of course, it's GOTH! Is it gloomy? Absolutely. Is it metal? Definitely.
I've been listening to goth music since circa 1995, and I must say I'm not sure why I waited 3 years to purchase this masterpiece of despair. Get it; you will not be sorry!
Absolutely perfect October 24, 2008 I've been listening to doom metal for many years but I'd never listened to Draconian until some days ago. What a miss... This is a perfect album, with a dark atmosphere, full of emotion and with a good combination of clean and growl vocals. Every song is fantastic and the whole album is perfect, even the cover :-)
