What's so 'Dark' about Dark Light? October 13, 2005 7 out of 21 found this review helpful
I am extremely disspointed with this album. For starters I bought the Limited Edition Internet version of Dark Light. The two bonus songs aren't even good at all. Let me start by saying that I have been a fan of HIM for a long time. I think I knew HIM longer then Bam Margera became a fan! But the reason why I am so disspointed is because almost all the songs sound the same! Some of their best work is buried in the heaviness of the older albums if you look. To say that the sound of this album is not poppier than usual is a complete delusion. Of course whether it be coming from the band or the record company, its a deliberate decision to make the album a little more marketable to the adolescent alternative scene here in the USA. I live here and can recognize the intention almost immediately. Take for example the front page endorsement by Hot Topic, and the soon to be incessant promotion on MTV. Their association with Bam is also something which can be lucrative in the adolescent market. As far as I believe, HIM was picked up for this purpose alone, as well as the fact that they already have an existing fanbase which makes promoting them a hell of a lot easier. Whether you want to think of it or not, they are a cash cow now. To me Dark Light sound too much like pop...by pop I mean mainstream...as pop is short for popular music...I don't mean bubblegum pop. Of course if you ever heard Deep Shadows and Brilliant Highlights, that album was also pop, but it had a very beautiful gloomy atmosphere in that album. Songs like 'In Joy and Sorrow', 'Love you like I do' and 'Close to the flame' are perfect examples. In Dark Light, the songs just sound the same one after the other, have no passion, boring, dull and bland. There are only two good songs in the album and that's 'Play Dead' and 'Night side of Eden'. Everything else is just dull. If you are a new fan of HIM then you won't really see the different. Go buy Love Metal or Greatest Love Songs 666 and you will see. This is the first time I have ever given a HIM album 1 star. It's too bad that Dark Light had to be the album to introduce HIM to the USA. I think Love Metal should have been the one. When I first heard of the band, I percieved them as goth-rock, or at least goth-inspired rock. When I bought their albums, I percieved them as goth rock, much like the earlier music by the 69 eyes, but more 80's than that. What I am concerned with is that it took 24 listens of Dark Light and I still don't like it. This is highly unusual for me, and for that I am curious as to where this era is going to go. I know that they are going to be heavily promoted here, but I am not sure exactly what all of this will result in. If HIM keep making albums similar to Dark Light and giving Sire Records the 'hits' that they want, they will be gaining alot of new fans but losing alot of the old ones who were there from day one. I recommend to buy instead: Razorblade Romance, Greatest Love Songs 666 [Import], Love Metal, Deep Shadows and Brilliant Highlights or even And Love Said No: Greatest Hits 1997-2004. Also check out Love Metal Archives Vol 1 DVD or The Video Collection for more.

Suppose to be rock/metal, sorry attempt at either. Wannabe's hopefully soon will be has beens. Only sorry can't give negative stars. Only gave one cause you have to. Ugh. My ears/brain hurt from hearing them.
What Happened to H.I.M. ?!?! October 21, 2005 4 out of 8 found this review helpful
I happen to adore Ville Valo, but even I have to admit that this album was a complete let down. It really is such a shame, because anyone hearing them for the first time, is just not going to hear how good of a group they really are. All of the edge, all of the awesome catchy rhythms, all of the dark but unbelievably sexy vocals and lyrics.......they're just gone. Even his new haircut makes me want to cry. Sorry to say it, but I think I am going to go on with my life, keep enjoying the old H.I.M. albums, and pretend this one never existed. :(
