4 out of 5 stars Something Missing?   October 10, 2006
6 out of 10 found this review helpful

I recently purchased the new Evanescence cd and upon listening to the whole thing I came to the conclusion that it was missing something. That something is Ben Moody. The former Evanescence guitarist' hard yet melodic guitar play is replaced with an imitator who does not quite live up to his predecessor. Don't get me wrong, this is a very strong album. But not the album I have been waiting the last three years for. While a lot of you feel as though the album harkens back to the Origin album, I cannot relate as I have not heard Origin. I never thought I'd say this about an album, but I think the album is softer than it should be with the abscense of Moody on guitar. I get annoyed when people accuse albums of going soft, but the first 6-7 songs are fairly harder and then Amy Lee kind of dominates with her piano.

I lover her voice mind you, and it is as strong if not stronger than ever, but I think the reason for that is because the lack of influence from Moody's guitar wail. I am sure I will be accused of being a Fallen fan and not a true Evanescence fan because I was expecting Fallen part 2, but this album to me actually seems more of an Amy Lee album than Evanescence. I still have to give it a 4 out of 5 though because it has a quality all its own. Just not what I expected.

3 out of 5 stars A great single...a mediocre album.   October 10, 2006

I fell in love with Amy Lee and Evanescence shortly after the release of Fallen for three reasons. 1) She can sing. 2) She can play an instrument. 3) She writes her own songs. A tri-fecta that is found less and less in the music industry of the 21st century. So needless to say that after fallen I scourged the internet to find the tracks off of "Origin" and other long lost and out of print EP's from the group. These tracks combined with their live album "Anywhere but home." Provided me with countless hours of excellent music, while I eagerly awaited a new release.

When Call Me When You're Sober was released in August, I knew I immediately had to own this album when it came out. But upon obtaining it I was disappointed to find out over half of the songs on "The Open Door" are nowhere to the caliber of "Sober." At least half of the album is slow and sloggy and sound very similar to one another.

To me it seems as if Evanescence blended a little more Pop influence with the open door as is made evident by the use of Christina Aguilera's NASA's induced voice enhancer in Sweet Sacrifice and Lacrymosa. (I cringe every time I here Lacrymosa.)

Despite the fact that most of the guitar work on the album is similar to fallen, former guitarist Ben Moody's presence is sorely missed. Moody and Lee were able to work excellently off of one another and produce a plethora of excellent music.

While "The Open Door" may not be spectacular it does have some good tunes on it. Songs like Call Me When You're Sober, the Only One, Lithium, Lose Control, Good Enough and even after a few listens Sweet Sacrifice are good additions to my ever growing Evanescence playlist.

The Open door is not Evanescence's best work; I give it a solid C+. I wouldn't recommend buying it new unless you can't find any copies at used CD warehouse, but even then it may just be worth paying a few dollars on iTunes for the few tracks that make this album worthwhile.

4 out of 5 stars It's good but...........   October 10, 2006

For all the real fans (real being people who like Amy and Ben not just Amy)you will deffinitely notice Ben's departure. I will say that I didn't expect anything good to come after Ben left but this cd is quite good.
1. Sweet Sacrifice: It's very good, the chorus is awesome and the drums are amazing!
2. Call Me When You're Sober: This song is good but a little more commercial than you'd expect from the group. Almost made me pass up the album.
3. Weight of the World: Really easy to pass up if you're not carefull but after a rotation or two you'll love it.
4. Lithium: Not the type of ballad I expected, but I try not to compare it to My Immortal. It's okay but not one of the best tracks
5. Cloud Nine: I don't really like this song. They tried too hard, the music works but the lyrics just don't.
6. Snow White Queen: The title is better than the song, but the song isn't bad. It's got a pretty good melody to it.
7. Lacrymosa: It's a good song but not really distinctive.
8. Like You: My personal favorite. The melody is great, the music is great and I love the lyrics. A perfect song.
9. Lose Control: Another track I don't really care for. I can't really put my finger on the problem.
10. The Only One: Another perfect track. The guitar is great here and the lyrics are powerfull.
11. Your Star: Once again another fallen track. Just doesn't work at all.
12. All That I'm Living For: Deffinitely one of the best! The moment the track starts you'll love it!
13. Good Enough: This is one that I just can't seem to like no matter how much I try. I hope it grows on me.

That's pretty much the rundown. Like others have said, the album is nowhere near as diverse as Fallen was. That's how you can tell Ben is gone. There is no balance anymore. It's all Amy and as great as she is she can't carry the group by herself. Terry is good but I feel like he's trying too hard to sound like Ben. It's not his fault, he just doesn't have a choice because that's the Evanescence sound. I feel it's worth a buy because it's still a really good album. This album is great but Fallen was PERFECT. I'm still waiting to see what Ben will do! Also I suggest Origin if you don't have it. It'll show you what's missing!!!

1 out of 5 stars Terrible album   October 10, 2006

Sadly I was really looking forward to this album, how one group could go from "Fallen" to this heap of manure is really suprising. First of all this isn't a gothic album, heck its not even a rock album. You could easily place Christina Aguilera's picture on the front of this CD and sell it as her latest work without any problems.
If youre a fan of pop (Britney Spears, Aguilera, Ashley Simpson etc) then try listening to a sample of it, otherwise if you have a decent taste in music steer clear of this.

5 out of 5 stars Ethereal vocals..   October 14, 2006

Amy Lee's voice is like a siren song in the midst of a dream. This album is an emotional epic sweeping through a stormy landscape of theatrical lyrics and thundering guitars.
