5 out of 5 stars Wonderful   January 15, 2007

I really enjoy this CD. I have been a fan of Midnight Syndicate for several years, and I look forward to each release. When I heard this CD was going to be a retrospective, I must admit I was a little disappointed as I was hoping for new material. I bought the CD anyway and it has exceeded my expectations.

First of all, there is new material! There are four tracks that were previously unreleased, so that satisfied my need for something I hadn't heard before. Also, there are tracks from Midnight Syndicate's first release, which was self-titled and which I hadn't heard before - so that was new to me, too!

Second, I very much enjoy listening to how the tracks have changed from when they were first released on "Born of the Night" and "Realm of Shadows". They seem to have a bit more depth - to be more finely tuned than they were before, but not changed so much that they're too different to enjoy if you liked them the first time around.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent retrospective   November 30, 2006

I am a big Midnight Syndicate fan. That being said, I really enjoyed this disc.

It is what it is. It says right on the cover "Retrospective 1994-1999," so if you own "Born of the Night" or "Realm of Shadows" you don't really need this disc. However if you are a fan, in my opinion, there is enough here to merit the purchase. If you do not own both "Born of the Night" and "Realm of Shadows" then you are in for a real treat and I cannot recommend this disc enough.

As someone who owns all their discs, I was happy with the new versions of the songs. There's no reason not to like them. They haven't changed the songs, they just sound more full, more clear, and generally better. Comparing the versions you can hear the development as musicians in my opinion. Certain songs like "Nightstalker," "Vampire's Kiss," "Solemn Reflections," "Masque of Sorrow," and "Into the Abyss," sound significantly better. For some of these it was like hearing them for the first time. "Masque of Sorrow" is one in particular. Wow.

As far as new material, there are five tracks. "Prisoner of Time" is excellent and sounds very much like where the band is at today, "Scenes from 'The Dead Matter'" and "Return of the Apparition" are good atmospheric pieces. "Journey Into Dementia" is an older track with some vintage sounds. "Druids" is a cool drum-driven track off of the first self-titled CD.

As always, Midnight Syndicate's CDs are great background for gaming. I actually prefer this disc to the originals for gaming purposes because there are no voiceovers. I would recommend "Out of the Darkness" for any darker scenarios or gothic, horror, mystery-themed RPG adventures. It's a very consistent disc for a steady level of dread.

I'm looking forward to the next disc of new material!

5 out of 5 stars Great way to start your Midnight Syndicate collection!   January 19, 2007

Since I don't own any of this band's CD, I figured this one would be a great choice to become aquainted with them since it has songs from their other CDs.

If this CD is any indication of what their other music sounds like, I'M IN! I wish I'd heard of them sooner. My only problem now is trying to decide whcih CD of theirs to buy next.

5 out of 5 stars Deliciously Dark Music   May 17, 2007

OUT OF THE DARKNESS is a collection of tracks from three early Midnight Syndicate albums of mid to late 1990s. For those unfamiliar with the band, it is composed of Edward Douglas and Gavin Goszka. Their music is a horror lover's dream; its eeriness and atmospherically creepy notes will please even the most demanding Halloween music or Gothic symphony aficionados.

Back to OUT OF THE DARKNESS. The songs (they're really instrumentals, save for one) have been re-mastered and re-recorded for this release, making them sound even better than they must have sounded originally now that they've grown musically. Some of the standout tracks include "Born of the Night" (my personal favorite), "Eye of the Storm" (the piano in these songs is haunting), "Legions of the Night", "Eclipse", and "Darkfolk".

All in all, this album has a total of 24 songs and also includes some previously unreleased tracks as well as two songs from Edward's short horror film, The Dead Matter (which will become a feature-length horror film in 2008).

This one's a winner. Everything these guys put out is simply awesome. I'm a horror writer and I always seek out good atmospheric music, such as horror film scores, when I write; Midnight Syndicate have become regulars in my player. If you don't have any of their albums yet, this is a good place to start. Then get THE 13TH HOUR, their masterpiece, in my opinion. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars I CAN'T get ENOUGH of this CD!! Kudos, Ed and Gavin!   July 25, 2006

Yes, Out of the Darkness is a Retrospective CD of the past works of Midnight Syndicate. The remixes of past efforts of tracks from "Born of the Night" and Realm of Shadows" are notably cleaner and fuller on this CD showing a growth as artists that Edward Douglas and Gavin Goszka truly are. I must admit that my favorite remixes are 'Solemn Reflections' (the Harpsicord at the end is most luscious!)'Into the Abyss' is much stronger than the original as it flows so freely that you can imagine yourself flying with the music over crashing waves! 'Masque of Sorrow' has an extra emotional quality to it that is brought out in the new arrangement as well. There are also some previously un released tracks on this CD worth mentioning. A new piece by Gavin Goszka called "Prisoner of Time' has a forelorn but beautiful sadness to it that is probally my favorite track on this CD. However, the tracks by Edward Douglas, 'Scenes from The Dead Matter' and 'Journey into Dementia' from his previous forays in movie making give me insight as to what we can expect later this year from this Dynamic Duo as they are set to score two new Horror Movies! This, to me, has been a long time coming and is about to come full circle for them and I couldn't be any happier! AS far as the previously mentioned "Born of the Night" and "Realm of Shadows" CDs...seeing how these two are no longer available, "Out of the Darkness" provides the best of these two CDs into one! I have both and in my honest heartfelt opinion, the new arrangements of the tracks (from the first two CDs) upon this Retropective surpass the effectivness from the first two!!
Bravo Gentlemen! You are true Artists to the end! I will always be true BLUE Midnight Syndicate Supporter!! I look forward to ALL your future endeavors...
