Cure Prove They Rock February 10, 2007 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Throw away the synthesizers and crank up the amps. That's what Robert Smith and The Cure chose to do in the Summer of 2005. The result: a sound I like to refer to as 'rock'. No synth-pop or new wave dance stuff here. Robert Smith has always nodded to Jimmi Hendrix from time to time and in this compilation of festival appearances shows off Smith's guitar chops like no other live DVD available. The guy can play guitar.
Snooty video-philes and industry experts will tell you how horrible the editing job is and how terrible the video effects in this compilation turn out. I don't get it. After reading some of these reviews I expected some tortured, terrible creation that was barely watchable. Quite the contrary. The myth of its poor quality is just that - hardly relying on much of the 'amateur' footage from cell phones and what-not, the filming and effects capture the mood of each song nicely. If you have a Phd in film studies, you will not agree since you know oh so much better than the rest of us philistines.
Anyway, if you like The Cure, the price is nice and there is absolutely no reason you do not want this item. I'm glad I ignored the naysayers. You will be too.
One for the Fans February 24, 2007 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
On the plus side, this IS a great set list. The Cure are wise to haul out older songs like the Drowning Man and M. But I'll be the d-bag to just come right and say it - keyboards are sorely missed in many of these tracks. Many of these songs sound like they are being performed by a Cure cover band, and try as he might, Porl Thompson can't cover all the holes in the sound with all that guitar noodling. Very simply put, it's like eating cake that doesn't have icing on it - it's very good, but you KNOW something crucial is missing. And by the way, the camera work in this DVD is as bad as many people are saying it is, with a distinct "bootleg"-ish look and feel to it. Having said that, the Cure have never been terribly visually exciting anyway, so that alone doesn't flaw this set. I dock this DVD because of the before mentioned lack of keys , and because of the glaring lack of any bonus footage - interviews or some backstage things would have been nice, and I have searched in vain for those dreadful "easter eggs" that normally crop up on DVD releases like these. As it is, I can't rate this as high as the "Trilogy" DVD but I can recommend it for fans of the Cure.
Ah perfection! December 7, 2006 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
I recently tracked down "The Cure in Orange" DVD which I remember being the best show ever....It was good but I think this one is much better...Jason Cooper is a MUCH better drummer.... and Porl Thompson actually looks cool..... I disagree with anyone who says without keyboard parts there seems to be something missing.......I would state that the keyboard parts at times ruin the Trilogy DVD ( "Pictures of You" is almost brutal)
They dig out some of their best tunes here.... I bought it for "The Baby Screams".... and all of it is great!
a must have....
Enjoy!
Please don't expect another Trilogy December 7, 2006 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
First of all, I don't believe that I could give anything the Cure ever released anything lower than 5 stars, but this DVD does have some flaws. first of all, i will be the first to admit that I am not thrilled about this 4 man lineup. I love the return of Porl, but a Cure without a keyboardist is like chewing gum without any teeth.....well maybe not that bad, but you get my point. Don't get me wrong though, they sound wonderful in the songs they play, but something is just lacking. Now to the video quality. This is like a mix of home video and professional shots. By no means does this come near Trilogy visually. This is more of a raw, uncut version and probably more realistic. I can see why many people would not like watching something like this. The scenes jump clear to hazy, then back to clear, and could get annoying. Those would be my 2 biggest complaints. Otherwise, the DVD sound is beautiful, and song list is nice also. Of course, a lot of my favorite songs would be pretty difficult to play without a keyboard.
Overall: A must have for any Cure fans.
A DVD For the fans by the Fans February 14, 2007 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Well I have to admit when i found this new dvd here on amazon I was overjoyed and thrilled with the anticipation of a new Cure live Dvd.. After growing up with The Cure In orange and more recentley TRILOGY I have been in awe of there ability to capture there lush atmospheric textures and guitar ballads.. I felt a little let down with this one..as it says its shot by fans and crew and various people over a bunch of shows thru france/belgium/sicily/ switzerland. and more. the sound quality is good but the overall feel is a little cheap and a bit roughly handed but that does seem to be what they wanted.. a bare paired back rock and roll show.. and they never let you down on that.. its guitars andf feedback and simple lights and no special effects.... the last thing i would have expected from this band, But Obviously a lean towards where there maybe getting back to.. the list of songs is great but not each song is given over to its full effect, this mainly being to the bands lineup now being a keyboard-less one.. altho the audience singing the keyboard lines in one song really did lift make me smile. I'm a lifetime Cure fan so any live dvd is a great one but this does seem to be the " By the fans for the fans.." if you were to want to show someone a Slick polished live cure DVd then stick to Trilogy.. keep this for yourself when your turining the lights down and kneeling infront of the tv screen and wishing you were in the front row..Its still worth every cent to any cure fan.. lord knows they don;t release enough to film.. i.e. wheres the Cure in orange DVD?? Buy this, just be prepared. Its a world away from TRILOGY.. they both stand in there own right.
