if you like The Cure, do yourself a favour and get this DVD!!! October 10, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I just wish I were in one of those concerts because they really played their music, I mean, not only their hits and singles but also the great b-side songs. There is just one little detail I would complain about, and is the fact that I missed the keyboards. Other than that this DVD is a compilation you need to have and as they say: "Enjoy it in the dark"
I've Seen Better Cure Bootlegs April 22, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The Cure have only two live DVD's - both recorded post 2000; 20 years after they began and at least 5 years since their prime. "Trilogy" - a three hour set which includes Pornography, Disintregration, and Bloodflowers in their entireties; and this DVD - "The Cure: Festival 2005".
Released in late 2006, it was shot during the band's headlining shows at 9 European music festivals in the summer of 2005. The video features a variety of angles "captured by a mix of fans, crew and 'on-the-night-big-screen cameras'. It is noted by the return of former guitarist Porl Thompson. Festival has 30 songs taken from most of their albums so it provides a much wider range of material than Trilogy. It is also heavily waited towards the material that Porl Thompson was involved in - from 'The Top' to 'Wish'.
"Open" (from Wish) "Fascination Street" (from Disintegration) "alt.end" (from The Cure) "The Blood" (from The Head on the Door) "A Night Like This" (from The Head on the Door) "The End of the World" (from The Cure) "If Only Tonight We Could Sleep" (from Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me) "The Kiss" (from Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me) "Shake Dog Shake" (from The Top) "Us or Them" (from The Cure) "Never Enough" (from Mixed Up) "The Figurehead" (from Pornography) "A Strange Day" (from Pornography) "Push" (from The Head on the Door) "Just Like Heaven" (from Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me) "In Between Days" (from The Head on the Door) "From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea" (from Wish) "The Drowning Man" (from Faith) "Signal to Noise" (B-side to "Cut Here") "The Baby Screams" (from The Head on the Door) "One Hundred Years" (from Pornography) "Shiver and Shake" (from Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me) "End" (from Wish) "At Night" (from Seventeen Seconds) "M" (from Seventeen Seconds) "Play for Today" (from Seventeen Seconds) "A Forest" (from Seventeen Seconds) "Plainsong" (from Disintegration) "Disintegration" (from Disintegration) "Faith" (from Faith)
Although it is an excellent collection of songs, there isn't much variety in terms of the visual experience - a byproduct of festival touring. I don't mind the different camera techniques but I don't think the sound mix is very good for this day and age.
It seems a little strange that The Cure's best live video - the full concert "Live in Orange" has not made it to DVD, yet an average live DVD that is no better than some Cure bootlegs gets an official release.
Fat Bob and the old boys play out December 6, 2006 Okay, in case you're not a fan, this is the most recent version of the Cure, just Robert Smith, his long-time running mate Simon Gallup on bass, and Jason Cooper on drums, a 12 year veteran. Joining them for the moment (and maybe longer it seems) is Porl Thompson on guitar, who hasn't been around since the 90's. Because these guys know each other and the music so well, there are no rough spots here, this is very familar territory. Personally I don't think Porl adds that much, his guitar is accomplished, but it lacks a distinctive voice to my ears. And I really think a keyboard is necessary to fill out the Cure sound. As a result I think this feels a little spare (they do "Plainsong" and it sounds okay, but . . . odd). It does force Bob to play guitar a lot, and that's a good thing, he was handing off a lot to Perry in concert when I saw them last.
Other than that, it's just a pure concert piece, very familiar camera angles, not that there's anything wrong with that, I just want to see them play anyway. But the recording is a little grainy in places, like it was trying for a pixelated special effect look (see the opening frames) and some other silly effects like in "Heaven", which also make Bob look like a vampire who just lifted something heavy. It even gets black and white in places. Compared to the sparkling look of "Trilogy", this is a real letdown in quality.
My final comment is that the setlist is very . . . settled. I sure would like to see them play something absolutely new some day, why not a Join the Dots concert? Something like that. I mean, how many times can you watch Bob do "A Forest"? Okay, lots, me too, but a fresh set would be nice (an exception is "Push", which I've never seen them play).
So, I'll give it a 4, because it is the Cure, and there's never enough material as far as I'm concerned, and there's 30 songs here, very generous. And because this is priced remarkably low, like Trilogy. That makes up for the $20+ prices on the "enhanced" CD's, so the ledger's square again. Thanks Bob.
Lots of Great Music January 16, 2007 I've seen better concert footage but if you want to hear the Cure with Porl Thompson on guitar again, here is an excellent selection of songs to see & hear a 4 piece Cure band. The price is right for what has been released and the band looks like they are enjoying themselves again.
Okay but not Great January 16, 2007 This DVD is okay. I'm watching it on a Sony Bravia XBR2 1080i LCD and a Pioneer DVR-533H. It is really grainy most of the time. The actual film footage is not that good in comparison to the "Trilogy" which is short one star of being a five because it isn't in HD. A lot of the back lighting totally blinds out the band members at times. The night cameras were just not setup for going from really dark to blinding light. The audio is good and plays awesome. It has a great song list of most of my favorite Cure songs. Not all the trendy songs like on most tours. My favorite album is Bloodflowers. I was kinda disappointed that there weren't any song off of this classic cd. That's okay there's plenty to make up for this. Overall this is still a good dvd for real Cure fans. It's pretty cool seeing Porl back and nailing all the songs. Even a few off of "The Cure" cd. What this dvd lacks in video it makes up for in audio. That's probably why the price is so low. Regardless it's still a good dvd to have in your collection. I'm glad I got it and I always buy whatever they dish out. Crank it up!
