one of my faourite albums ever June 11, 2001 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
The first thing you'll notice when you listen to this cd, is their singer Sharon den Adel, who's (in my opinion), the best female singer in the world. She can sing like an angel but can also sound angry, she sings with pretty much variety. If I have to describe this cd, I would call it metal with some very sweet influences. Caged, for example, or Deceiver of Fools are metalsongs, but Never-Ending Story and In Perfect Harmony are more ballads. I can recommend this album to everybody, it's one of my favourite cd's ever. Buy it and you'll fall in love with this band, just like I did.
Within or Without Temptation? January 19, 2002 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I first saw (the Dutch band) Within Temptation play live at the 2001 Pinkpop festival, but back then i didn't know much about their music. After the festival i started downloading one song of their latest album; "Mother Earth". I was quite surprised by what i heard because there's nothing like this kinda music over here in Holland. So basically the next day i went to the music store and bought the album and i discovered the one song i downloaded (also called "mother earth") wasn't even the best song on it! The second song on the album is "Ice Queen" (which is also their first single) is briliant. Ice Queen is kinda like Mother Earth, a gothic/metal song with amazing vocals by their lead singer, Sharon den Adel. On their two previous albums, guitar player Robert Westerholt did a lot more vocals than on this one but for sure Sharon can do the job alone. Following Ice Queen there are four songs that are less outrageous than the first two songs; "Our Farewell", "Caged", "The Promise" and "Never-ending Story" all of them are great songs with Caged and Never-ending Story being amazing. The last three songs are "Deceiver of Fools", "Dark Wings" (which according to me is the best song on the album due to it's energy and amazing vocals) and "In Perfect Harmony" (which i think is the only disappointing song). Within Temptation describe their own music as "celtic and gothic-metal/rock". WT obviously decided to put quality first and quantity second on this album (as they did on their previous albums) considering there's only 9 'real' songs and an intro on it, although most songs are about 5 minutes and none less than 4. My final conclusion: DEFINITELY WITHIN TEMPTATION! Great band, great album, so if you can get this album, get it!
Buy the Original Version February 15, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I brought this version thinking it would sound awesome since it's "Remastered", the problem is, it sounds too good, the music is really amped up, sure that's nice, but not when you want to hear the singer's voice mostly, also the track, "World of Make Believe" is NOT on this Version, even though it says so above. You do get four Live bonus tracks but I'm not one for Live songs on CDs, id rather have the two bonus tracks you get with the Original Version. Bottom line, even though this CD has a cooler cover, what's on the inside isn't that great, don't waste your money like me, Buy the other version.
WOW! September 7, 2003 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Who the heck is 'Within Temptation'? Hey, I'm 57 years old...how would I know? I listen to Matt Drudge, who does a radio show on Sunday nights. He plays snipets of songs at the start of each program segment...and he kept playing (I know now) a song I didn't recognize but was kinda haunted by...after hearing it month after month, he finally identified it as 'Mother Earth.' I bought the CD for bucku bucks, but I wouldn't sell it back to you for double what I paid. Is Sharon den Adel the best singer in the world? NOPE! But I'd put her in the top 10. There are a lot of painful and nasty things happening all around us, but listening to Sharon sing reminds me that there is also a great deal of beauty too. This is a SUPER A+ CD! Texture, melody, hard, angry, sweet, soft, tear-evoking, heart-skipping, dreamy, beautiful.. the list goes on. This is now one of my favorites...a really unique group with talent galore. The shame of it all is that so few in the US are aware of them. So, now that you know, please spread the word. 'Within Temptation' with the incomparable Sharon den Adel is music that your really, really, really need to hear. Happy listening!
Very special October 3, 2003 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I normally don't write reviews, but I listened and enjoyed this album so much, that I thought it really deserved a good review. I like fantasy books a lot, and this music reminds me of them. Each song is a magical story on its own. This album is absolutely worth listening, and I hope to see a new album of them soon.
