Awesome riffs, lyrically weak July 11, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
The Exodus I loved was the Exodus that was firmly rooted in the real world - singing about social injustice on a serious and intelligent level. They lost it with Tempo, picked it up again with Shovel HKM, but here, completely descended into anti religious childishness.
Juvenile and sad is all I can say for the lyrics of this album. But hey, maybe you are a fan of that sort of stuff. I dug Exodus because, while 90% of other metal bands seemed to be lost in the esoterics or religion bashing, they were firmly rooted in reality. Not any more, unfortunately. Its as if the kids at school teased them so much they had to try and prove they can be as 'heavy' as the rest - a bit like what happened to Anthrax after "I'm the Man" came out. Why bother guys?? You were already the best!! You should have stayed innovators!
Aside from this perspective, riff-wise, they are powerful as ever, and any metal fan will hardly be disapponted with the ear bleeding sonic assaults offered here. Aggressive, powerful with excellent production values - but not one tune got the hairs on the back of my neck up and a put irresistable smile on my face, as happened with "Toxic Waltz", "I am Abomination" or "Sealed with a Fist" off their previous albums. Overall, a bit of a disappointment to this fan.
Another ultra-heavy quality Exodus offering! October 26, 2007 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Exodus is still one of the remaining QUALITY thrash bands out there. Good to hear the sound of Tom Hunting back behind the drum kit. (Gary Holt doesn't seem so 'alone' now:-...Oh and BTW after hearing the last 3 Exodus albums, I'd love to shake the man's hand) The sound is brutal and heavy as hell. These guys just go all out in venting all their worldly frustrations! The guitars are ultra-distorted and razor sharp, occasionally slightly overshadowing the sound of the drums, which to some extent is a good thing IMHO. The guitar chemistry between Mr. Holt and Mr. Altus is superb to say the least (on par or even better than that of the classic Exodus 'H-Team'). Mr. Dukes has settled in nicely as well with his brutal vocal chops. As for the lengthy songs, well, I personally enjoy these types of albums the most, so there!. Can't really pick out favorite tracks because they're all good. Anyone into that heavy & meaty guitar sound is in for a treat, as was the case with the last two Exodus albums following the 2004 comeback. What else can I say. Pick this one up with confidence and crank it!
Exodus continues it's glorious return! October 26, 2007 This is Exodus 3rd album in their most recent chapter (basically the band's return in the new millenium) & if you ask me this newer Exodus has never sounded better! I would have to say that the last 3 outings has shown a MUCH TIGHTER & HEAVIER band & each album sounds perfect in delivery & production. As for 'Atrocity...' specifically, it sounds like a cross of the last 2 CDs which makes for a great listen, but the only thing that sounds weird to me is that Rob Dukes sounds like Steve Sousa...like if he was forced to sound like the singer no one wanted to see leave the band. Maybe it's just me but it's just strange considering how different Rob sounded on 'Shovel Headed Kill Machine.' Anyway, that aside it's still a piece of Exodus material that can't be passed up!
EXODUS!!! October 27, 2007 wowwwww when i first picked this cd up i was thinking is it worth buying i loved shovel headed kill machine (many fans gave up on exodus after steve souza left) but this album is in your face thrash metal! but is it just me how come the last track says 19min? but theres only 3min of song and the rest is all silent?
EXODUS releases best cd of 2007...so far. October 23, 2007 Listened to it once through and it blew me away. Andy Sneap is the best producer out there...the sounds are crystal clear yet still retains the heaviness of the playing...if that makes sense.
I gather that Exhibit A is Religion?? Not having all the lyrics, I pick up a heavy anti-religious take and love it. there are only 8 songs...if you don't include the intro A CALL TO ARMS....and most clock in at over 6 mins each...it gives the band time to really explore the sonic brutality. Add in Rob Duke's vocals, which aren't as "cookie monterish" as were on SHOVEL...Rob's vocals are fairly clean with a killer aggro edge to them.
The drumming is frenetic, the bass heavy and thunderous...and the guitars and riffs are just intense. The lyrics seem to be very well thought out and even, dare I say, catchy?? hehheh.
Overall this is a razor's edge closeness to TEMPO, my fave thrash cd in decades...and that's on only one listen through.
Oh yeah...the title track, an epic 10 minute journey of just intense thrash shall be a classic moment in thrash history.
The boys have outdid themselves and I can't wait to see these songs done in a live setting...and then EXHIBIT B...mouth is drooling.
Congrats to all involved...another brilliant cd.
