Worth every penny (must purchase since the promos floating around have monologue spoken through the songs)

5 out of 5 stars Majestic and Marvelous   May 17, 2008

This is by far the best goth-doom-metal album I have bought this year. I have listened to it over and over again and I never get tired of it. If you like Opeth, I think you will dig Draconian!

4 out of 5 stars the most beautiful color, black   June 22, 2008

For those unfamiliar with their style, Draconian specialize in relentless metal riffs driven by a pair of guitars and led by the growls of Anders Jakobsson, but superbly followed by the slow, orchestral serenades of Lisa Johansson. Their music isn't quite as complex as that of Theatre of Tragedy (of Velvet Darkness days), nor as diverse as that of Tristania (beyond the veil days) but the overall effect is quite similar: mesmeric, inspiring, dark, beautiful music.

In Seasons Apart, it's business as usual for the band. There are no departures from the style which brought them success; however, they have concocted several pieces of amazing music on this album. Earthbound and Morphine Could stand out for me in particular.. the right balance between driving percussions, ripping guitars and airy melodies is achieved and the roles of the two vocalists are superbly cast.

Despite the pervasive lyrical themes centering on insanity, suicide and death (as is appropriate in doom metal), the feeling I get when listening to this album is not one of despair. My brain hears the words.. [in Earthbound: "Would you help me slit my wrists? Would you help me... DIE!!!!"] but my mind is processing the music behind it and reveling in its glorious melodies and not caring about what are much more than suicidal overtones. If you are prone to depression, or like happy music, maybe this album is not for you. But if you are enraptured by dark, beautiful melodies and the variety between growls and female vocals, this is the album for you!

5 out of 5 stars Buy It If You Like Doom/Goth   September 16, 2008

I'll keep this succinct. I am glad you can't wear out CDs. I listen to this one a lot. If you like things like the old CD by Tristania, "Widows Weeds", get this.

Honestly, it is one of my favorite Doom/Goth metal CDs of all time. Anders could easily do Death metal if he chose to do so, and Lisa just sounds angelic.

Some of the songs on the CD are simply epic. It's; dark, driving, powerful and often oddly romantic.

My favorite tracks on the CD are: Seasons Apart, The Failure Epiphany, Morphine Cloud, Bloodflower, Earthbound, and When I Wake.

I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Cutting Edge   November 13, 2008
The theme of this music is existentialism. It rolls all significant Western philosophies into now. So it is cutting edge and would do Kant, Schopenhauer, Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, et al., proud. I love it. It is not only beautiful but moving as well. Long live Draconian!
