4 out of 5 stars Not spectacular, but still a more than solid release   July 31, 2008

Since his divorce from Interscope in 2007, Trent Reznor has wasted little time in making new material available to the public, with the latest Nine Inch Nails offering being "The Slip". Coming only two months after Reznor's release of the instrumental "Ghosts I-IV", "The Slip" is a riveting album that borderlines perfection, but never quite gets there and seems to almost meander as it winds down to it's conclusion. Standout tracks, including "1,000,000", "Discipline", "Echoplex", and "Demon Seed" are pure Nine Inch Nails all the way, while "Corona Radiata" just comes off as a little too predictable for my tastes. The album as a whole seems to go by a little speedier to expected as well, and doesn't quite leave the lasting impression that one would hope compared to nearly everything else Nine Inch Nails has released over the past few years. However, all flaws aside, "The Slip" is still a more than solid release that delivers the goods that NIN fans expect, and while it isn't spectacular, "The Slip" is a success purely thanks to the fact that Trent can now do what he wants (and when he wants) without being handcuffed by a label. And that alone is reason enough to celebrate.

5 out of 5 stars "Limited"   July 23, 2008

"The Slip" is marked "Limited Edition." I ordered my LE on its release date and received the numbered edition, 146,903/250,000. A DVD rides on the hip of the CD. I like it! A required buy for all NIN fans.

2 out of 5 stars What is Trent thinking?   August 6, 2008

I am so dissapointed in this album. I'm one of those fans who choose not to listen to an album until I have the complete package in my possesion. What a mistake I made by buying this album. I should have just downloaded this one for free, because that is what this album sounds like...free music. It's nothing I was hoping for. There are only two good songs on the whole album, and the "whole" album is way, way, way, too short, and further more way too expensive. Trent Reznor has finnaly lost his mojo. Don't listen to all of these die hard NIN fans...they don't have the huevos to dis on Trent...trust me, this is a poor NIN album.

1 out of 5 stars wow what happened   October 13, 2008

i don't know whats happened to nin as of late but the music (and i use that very lightly) they have been putting out has been garbage.maybe i got to used to the good stuff like head like a hole. this "music" doesn't fill me with any emotion or feeling at all.it makes me sleepy as a matter of fact. spend your money on something a little more worthwhile.you'll see reviews about how this is so good because he's not restricted by the recording company...bull it seems as he needs someone to tell him when he sucks instead of just putting anything out there...the title the slip really fits on the other hand as this "music" has slipped right down the toilet

3 out of 5 stars The beat is still vital, but the melody is fading   November 18, 2008

The downward spiral indeed. Reznor continues his artistic liberations via no record contracts, although it is becoming more and more clear that, unlike Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails used that platform to capitalize on its popularity and fan base by releasing sometimes less restrained, but almost always less detailed songs. The Slip works well enough to provide ample counterpoint to his last snooze-fest of industrial ambiance, Ghosts I-IV, with a way more uptempo, rocking vibe, but still continues down a path of sagging mediocrity. Reznor will always be a perceptive producer and offer intriguing soundscapes- even at his most generic or derivative, but it feels like the overall compositional quality has indeed slipped.
