Very Solid July 23, 2008 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
I think this is a very solid album, even more so than Year Zero. Old school NIN fans will find plenty to like here. There are nods to all the old albums, but more than anything this is a return to roots for Reznor. Unlike the experimental/noise concept album that was Year Zero, this record feels more like a mix of Downward Spiral and the more recent With Teeth. Overall, it's a great album.
DON'T buy this album July 28, 2008 2 out of 10 found this review helpful
Given Reznor's horrid relationship with labels and production companies I would highly discourage anyone from paying for an album that Trent is freely giving away. Trent once had his own label and then had to disband it and even sue his business partner for impeding on his creative ownership. With recent bashing that CD's are a redundant and outdated form of mass production and consumption.
to me its only a matter of time before someone finds a way to corrupt the current record label thats producing and distributing NIN's newest Halo to which Reznor will once again have to fight for creative ownership of his own work.
Nothing against Amazon but if Trent is giving this away as a gift to his fans for all our years of dedication, I'd say we should just take him up on that.
Not the greatest, but still has some decent tracks July 30, 2008 2 out of 7 found this review helpful
This album seems like it was rushed into production and had some left of tracks from past albums tossed in as filler. Overall, i would say check out other pieces of work from NIN's back catalog before diving into this one if you are new nine inch nails.
"Head Down" and "Demon Seed" are the two main highlights of this album. "1,000,000" is a good track too, but it doesnt hold ground like the other two tracks mentioned before. "Discipline" is a fun dancy kind of track with a good beat and "Echoplex" is a excellent track as well. "Letting You" is the heaviest track on the album and is a favorite of mine. The rest seem like the "filler" tracks to me. "Corona Radiata" (a track i skip just about every time i play this CD) is pretty much a left over track from the "Ghosts" series and the same can possibly be said about "The Four Of Us are Dying". "Lights in the Sky" is pretty much the "Hurt" for this album....boring and dull and is another track i skip just about everytime i listen to this CD.
Overall, its not the greatest NIN album to date. If you was some of the more excellent stuff TR has produced, look at getting your hands on "The Downward Spiral" or "The Fragile".
What a burn. August 4, 2008 2 out of 12 found this review helpful
Nope. Sorry, it's not that good. there are 10 tracks on this album, seven that actually have lyrics, one that is pretty much just an album filler of a single piano and Trent Reznor whispering some meaningless jibber jab along to. Maybe two really good NIN tracks on the whole record, and that's being generous. On top of that, this silly album is verry expensive....and the "bonus" video is just a repetitive practice moment between Reznor and his tour band. This album is a rip off....by far the worst NIN album yet made. Even With Teeth was better than this.
Another NIN masterpiece... August 5, 2008 2 out of 6 found this review helpful
I was a little disappointed with Year Zero, but not with The Slip, which I think is their best since, and on par with "With Teeth." Tracks like "Discipline" return to the pop sensibility of PHM, "Lights in the Sky" is a moving ballad, "Corona Radiata" a harrowing Fragile-esque instrumental which segues into another catchy instrumental "The Four of Us Are Dying." Here is my order as of now:
1. The Downward Spiral 2. With Teeth 3. The Fragile 4. Pretty Hate Machine 5. The Slip 6. Broken 7. Year Zero 8. Fixed 9. Ghosts I-IV
