a few good tracks... September 19, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I've been a NIN fan for years, but am continually disappointed when each new album (post-spiral) is released. There are always a few too many mediocre songs, cliche lyrics and formulaic song structures which get in the way of an otherwise brilliant album.
Of course I'm incredibly pleased to have just downloaded the new 'slip' album (not so new anymore though) and ill be playing it for the next week or so. But it always annoys me when Trent doesn't reach his potential. The main flaws of this album are also characteristic of 'With Teeth' and 'Year Zero' - too many cliche lyrics which Trent has been using for over a decade, and heavy songs which all sound identical (or else lack the artistry and experimental edge of Spiral and Broken). He also needs to put more effort into the drum beats in his songs (they tend to sound way too standardised), which is a surprise considering he's been influenced by guys like aphex twin.
I still hope NiN will one day create an album which does justice to Trent's skills. but even if they dont, they remain a long-lived band with an awesome assortment of great songs (alongside the crappy ones).
marginal at best October 21, 2008 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
Following revolutionary works like ghosts and year zero, the slip brings nothing new to the table. For a band known to reinvent itself on every album, this one feels like a rehash. If you have every halo, of course you'll buy it. Otherwise, download for free and see how much you actually listen to it.
Good But Not Memorable July 24, 2008 1 out of 7 found this review helpful
The funny thing about this album is that although every song is good, not one song stands out as something you would want to go back and listen to again.
After Year Zero, I was excited about another album coming out so quickly after, but you get what you wait for. The Slip is without a doubt a well-made album, it's just not memorable.
Just Go with It July 24, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have no idea what Trent Reznor is doing anymore, and I don't care. Weather you think The Slip is more of the same or not, if your fan, you have to appreciate it. Why? Because Nine Inch Nails is still one of the only bands out there doing creative material and pushing the limits of what we accept as good music. Incidentally, he is still breaking new ground. Name one other rock band who released an instrumental CD, let alone something as experimental as Ghosts. And we get some of that on The Slip with Corona Radiata and The Four Of Us Are Dying.
At this point, it's as if we get to watch the entire creative process in action. Every little musical thought or notion Reznor has is now shared with us. Some of it's good, some not so much and some you will truly love. You have to grow with your favorite bands.
Personlly, I think The Slip isn't as good as Year Zero. It can't be compared to Ghosts, that album was an anomaly. It seems a little random, almost like a summary of all the different styles he's been dabbling in for the last 10 years. I have no problem with Trent working out hi musical shops and letting his fans tag along for the journey. Just go with it.
What a generous gift! Thank you Trent!!! July 31, 2008 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
Well as most of you know, this album was initially (and continues to be) released via a free download from nin.com as a gift to the fans for all our support over the years. And wow, what a generous gift. THANK YOU TRENT!
This album in it's physical from is also well worth the money. The DVD with performances and exclusive sticker pack make this worth the purchase. Each copy is individually numbered as it is a one time release. This is definitely a must have for any NIN fan.
Every track on here is great in it's own way. None of the tracks depend on each other which is great. This album is great for the NIN fans, but I don't think casual music listeners will be smart enough to "get it".
