5 out of 5 stars Way better than I thought it would be   January 19, 2008

I bought this CD because I have listened to Nightwish since 2000. I did not expect this solo CD from Tarja to be as good as any of the Nightwish material. But I was wrong. I have listened to it many times and find something new every time. The writing is very different than Nightwish, and Tarja's voice is better than ever. The writing is more mature than Nightwish in my opinion. It is difficult to try to categorize this album into one genre.

At this time, Amazon does not have any sound clips from the CD available. I suggest visiting the CD s site mywinterstorm.com and click the album link for samples.

I suggest to anyone that this is a great CD and worth getting. It will see a lot of play time in my player.

2 out of 5 stars Goddess of Heavy Metal   March 6, 2008

Tarja has gone from being the Goddess of Heavy Metal to the Mary Poppins of the Opera. After all those years with Nightwish I would have thought that she would have known what her forte is and how to exploit it, My Winter Storm is quite disappointing. There are some tracks on the album that show promise - Lost Northern Star, My Little Phoenix, Die Alive and Ciaran's Well, but the music is pushed way into the background. Tarja's voice dominates all and seems to result in the loss of fire and passion that characterized her performances with Nightwish. I love Tarja when she is competing on equal footing with the heavy metal music and not totally dominating, this is when she is at her best.

Most of the other tracks on the album are unobtrusive and almost somnambulistic at times, so much so that the album is only good for background music at dinner with friends. A complete remix by a heavy metal producer with free reign would work wonders with most of the tracks. I hope that this is something Tarja felt she had to do once or else the advice she is getting is way wrong.

Unfortunately, this album will probably be best remembered for the most appalling cover of Poison I have ever heard. I think that Alice Cooper fans the world over, myself included, cringe every time they hear this travesty. What was she thinking? I can only hope that her next album will have more of "The Rock" that she alludes to in the acknowledgements section. If you were thinking of buying this CD save your money and hope that the next album will be better.

1 out of 5 stars A tragic loss for Tarja fans!!   March 25, 2008

If it isn't Metal, it isn't music! At least, that's how I feel about things. Tarja, if you've read my review of the END OF AN ERA DVD, you know I once met you and personally thanked you for the touch of class you've brought to my music, HEAVY METAL! Metal is so full of power, passion, creativity, and drive. Yet your ballads with NIGHTWISH provided a positive and very beautiful contrast to the might and the power of hard rocking songs like SLAYING THE DREAMER and Metal epics like GHOST LOVE SCORE. Now you choose to create a boring album full of lack luster songs lacking in the passion, great musicianship, and the astounding compositions that Nightwish was famous for.

I said in my review of END OF AN ERA that the fans would be the ultimate losers. Sadly I was right on target eventhough I wanted desperatly to be wrong. Tarja, why do you strive to be so ordinary when you are the epitome of extraordinary? You have so much more to give the world!! Wake up and realize that in Heavy Metal, and ONLY in Heavy Metal, will the world truly be able to hear the full range of your voice and experience your incredible talents. Come back to us, Tarja. Tuomas has said, "we'll be waiting." So will I, my dear, for I love your voice and your music with the group. Your charisma with the band was astonishing! But MY WINTER STORM is like a slap in the face to me and ALL Metal fans. I think we all deserve much better than this boring new album. Don't you?

4 out of 5 stars I loved It!   January 8, 2008

I was so happy when I got my hands on this CD! I have been following Nightwish's career for some time, and Tarja's voice is what made me listen to them in the first place. Her voice is AMAZING on here! However, the album is not without it's flaws. I felt that the 18-track album was a little missleading because some of the songs are just intros. The album took a little getting used to. But now I love it! When I heard the cover song "Poison" I almost jumped out of my skin! Although, everyone else I've played it for, thinks it's horrible! (they are BIG Alice Cooper fans!) My favorite songs, are of course, the heviest ones, but I do apperciate what she is trying to do with the slower songs. If you are looking for Nightwish, you won't find much of it here. She has her own unique style and I think that it's wonderful! More 4.5 stars than 4. I just couldn't give it 5 stars because of all the "intro" tracks and one or two duds.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful   March 31, 2008

None of the reviews that I read seem to touch on the topic that this is a great album if you like opera/film/ or a big symphonic metal fan. It is a lame album if you want a Gothic rock or heavy metal experience.

As for me it was just what I was looking for. A few songs like lost Northern Star are heavy and resemble Nightwish. Most of the album takes on an atmospheric tone with lots of violins and acoustic sounds and limited drum patterns that are simplistic and in the background when they do occur. The entire album is dripping with emotion and feeling. Strong operatic tones mixed with some more contemporary singing is done in what I would rate as Tarja's best vocal performance to date.

While the song writing is great and the album takes on a much neglected softer side to symphonic metal I must admit that it lacks the complex vocal arrangments of say Therion and even takes a step backwards from the duet stylings of Nightwish. There is one guest appearance of male vocals that sound like Nightwish and one instance of a choir being used, but mostly the entire album is just Tarja singing. Though she sounds very good and puts a lot of feeling into it, she is not the most talented Operatic singer out there and seems to fall a little short (and I know die hard Tarja fans will disagree with me) just a little short of some of the competition (like Liv of Leaves Eyes). There are no guitar solos and what guitars are in the album (some of them acoustic, some rock) they are not bad, but not impressive either. The music is not beat based and the drumming is pretty simplistic as well. The violen scores are probably the most impressive aspect of the album besides the singing. So while I give it 5 stars it has limitations. If you are looking for an atmospheric operatic album heavily influenced by film music with only a few small rock elements for flavor this is a good album. If you are looking for a rock album with opera singing and screeching guitar solos this will disappoint. If you are a classical music fan you will also find it lukewarm because despite what metal fans think tarja is not the greatest opera singer, though she isn't bad either.
