3 out of 5 stars Not quite there   April 3, 2008

I have mixed feeling about this release. One on side, there is Tarja's incredibly beautiful voice. Not much you can say to dispute that. On the other end, the songs are substandard. Tarja is not a songwriter, and her song selections are poor. At least for veteran Nigthwish fans.
As "Dark Passion Play" makes clear, the success of Nightwish is due to the great songs written by Tuomas. Insert another outstanding vocalist (Anette) and Nightwish continues. Tarja needs to get over being so pretentious and self-important.

5 out of 5 stars Very impressed...   December 26, 2007

What an amazing album! One of the best from this year from what I've heard. I'm not too fond of the cover of "Poison", it may have been better suited for a single track, but oh well. Overall though, these songs blow me away with their depth and power. If you're looking for fast-paced stuff, you'll have to pass on this one, but if you always liked the softer or more mellow Nightwish songs, where Tarja's voice and beautiful music compliment each other, then you will love this album. Furthermore, The track "Oasis", which Tarja composed herself, is stunning and brilliant, and it's one of the best songs I've heard in a long time. Five stars. Congratulations, Tarja, and best of luck to you.

2 out of 5 stars Tarja is just average without Nightwish   January 16, 2008

Okay, so maybe average is a little harsh. Her vocals are amazing as always, and the song "I walk Alone" is pretty good. After that though...the music is pretty boring. Ballad after ballad...and the only rocking out parts feel forced - as if she's only doing that to entice Nightwish fans into buying into her.

All in all, I'm not going to buy this, or other CD's from her until the music songwriting quality steps up a few notches. It's a decent effort, but feels flat...and like she's just trying to appease old Nightwish fans with something that isn't what they want.

5 out of 5 stars Progressive Music   February 3, 2008

It's rare to find an artist that isn't afraid to be progressive. 98% of music today is processed pablum. Being a Nightwish fan I eagerly awaited both Dark Passion Play and Tarja's CD. I was majorly dissapointed with Dark Passion Play but not with this CD. Tarja was able to bring the emotion and mystery of the old Nightwish songs to life and she does the same here. She creates the imagery of mystic goddess no matter what she sings. I would not recommend this to someone who isn't willing to open their minds and ears to a different sound. It is unique. If this is about her experience with Nightwish - so be it - she carried the band to some great things and she is entitled to express is just as the band is entitled to express their feelings with Dark Passion Play. Great artists conjur great emotion, that's what makes the music enter your soul. Nightwish no longer touches my soul. Tarja's does. If you thinks she's lost the gothic goddess don't be fooled and check out Die Alive on YouTube. I recommend this for those who like progressive music. Buy the CD, put it on, sit back close your eyes and let the goddess take you on a journey.
