Sarcastic Satirical Fun July 26, 2005 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
The reason why I bought this cd was to prepare for Voltaire in concert about a month after I purchased the cd. And the only way I was able to trust it enough was through other customer reviews. Let me just say that it is fantastic if you like satirical lyrics and ballad like tunes, especially if you like the use of classical instruments. I feel as if I've been cast into some medieval concert hall. Great fun, especially if you are a fan of dark humor.
"The Second Coming of Voltaire..." August 4, 2000 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
It's a shame that more people don't know about this guy...however, as a follower of the underground goth/darkwave movement, I (obviously) do, and was eagerly anticipating this second album from the wit that is Voltaire after hearing his first album, The Devil's Bris, which I....loved. (Think 18th-century-esque songs with mournful violins, cellos, Voltaire's rich voice, and his lyrics--both lamenting and hysterically tongue-in-cheek funny...and so on, if you haven't heard it). Then came Almost Human...and I like it. Now, to be completely honest...it's a bit too catchy and upbeat for my tastes (I know that sounds ridiculous, but wait). It's a good album. Very catchy. But it's more...pop (NO! Not pop in the sense of Backstreet Boys, pop in the sense of pop/rock, as in Bauhaus-who I like--but anyway), than the last. Voltaire himself says that he's bridging the gap between the time period that the music on Bris was set in, and the modern music (I mean the legitimate one--) scene. And he is, and he does it wonderfully. The musicians are in top form, and Voltaire's voice and lyrics are wonderful as well. But it's a different direction for him. I'm still partial to Bris myself (Five stars, friends)--but this album is still great, and the new direction (that sounds incredibly stupid) that the music has taken on this album is enjoyable as well. Hey, wait. I'm the first person to review this...I can feel my ego inflating already. Maybe Voltaire (who is excellent with his fans) will send me something. Heh, heh, just kidding.
Excellent Follow-Up August 7, 2000 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Hmmm...pop music?...gothic-ethnicity? What is this anyway? I don't know what to call it, and I don't like labeling, so I'll just call this excellent! Again, Voltaire delivers quality lyrics that cover more than the "dark side" this time. It's impressive when a second effort equals the first, and is much different in lyrical content and arrangements. I thought Devil's Bris was a one-time wonder, and I was very wrong! I look forward from hearing more from Voltaire. This is a must for any fan of the first!
Almost Human is Almost Perfect August 17, 2000 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Again, tongue in cheek, Voltaire makes another great CD here. Good club music, high energy darkly humourous songs. I love this CD, and I think that everyone else should too.Great Baroque and Roll music
Laughter at the Art Museum... December 31, 2000 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Picture (if you will) your standard Fine Art Museum dropped in the middle of a typical large center of population. There is an art exhibit that includes many works by John Singer Sargent and you weave your way through the crowd of art stiffs and critics to view the amazing painter's work. You pause to look upon the famous piece titled, "Repose." Then you have your mind suddenly overtaken by "Dead Girls" by Voltaire and you almost have a giggle fit amongst the art critics because you can't shake the fact that "Repose" suddenly appears to be about necrophilia. That happened to me, and I warn you that this CD is so good that it will stick with you and maybe happen to YOU too! There are a lot of things you might listen to over the years, but this will be the CD you come back to every time. Excellent work!
