Voltaire, my friend... October 25, 2001 2 out of 10 found this review helpful
I personally know Voltaire and am sitting here laughing hysterically at all of the reviews that have been posted. While some of you have made very perceptive observations, others just put me on the floor laughing. Goth music? HA. Read his writings and you will get a better understanding of the man behind the music. Almost Human is definitely a great album, and I look forward to the release of his next album on February 14th, 2002.
A fine follow-up to Devil's Bris August 4, 2000 Adam Selzer (Chicago, IL USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Voltaire has described this one as "what new age would sound like if electricity was never discovered." That pretty well covers it. The basic sound from Devil's Bris, only with slightly modern, more inventive rythms. The first few songs, especially, really showcase Voltaire's abilities as a vocalist, which don't seem to get the attention that they deserve. The subject matter tends to differ from the songs on the first album, but there's never any doubt that they're by the same guy. Some highlights include "Dunce," "The Headless Waltz," and "Almost Human," (and, as an added bonus, babies seem to love "El Barquito.") I'm not sure that I'd consider this quite the masterpiece that Devil's Bris was (there are a couple of points at which a couple of songs are a bit uneven, but never badly so.), but it's certainly a worthy follow-up,(sophomore slumps be damned) and shows beyond all doubt that Voltaire isn't simply a fluke or a gimmick - he should be able to crank out great records for years to come. This should definitely help him cast off the shackles of being labelled "The Goth Weird Al" and get him appreciated as an artist in his own right. I was able to buy a copy at Dragoncon a month ago, and it hasn't been out of my cd player since. It gets better with each listen!
Almost Human Is A Worthy Successor to Devil's Bris August 3, 2000 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Voltaire has succeded in creating another great album! "Almost Human" keeps the same gothic feel as Voltaire's previous album, "The Devil's Bris", yet, the new album offers a "dark angelic" feel as well. The lyrics are sharp and witty (especialy the song God Thinks) and Voltaire's vocals are as incredible as ever. "Almost Human" is definatly a worthy follow up to Voltaire's last album and is definatly worth a listen.
Very good music August 4, 2000 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Voltaire has his own way of speaking to people. That way is singing. He does it very well. From what I've heard it speaks straight to the heart. That is a good thing.
There's no pulse August 5, 2000 Rosie (San Luis Obispo, CA) Top hats off to Voltaire. Like his first album (The Devil's Bris), this one leaves you wanting more. I've had it for 3 weeks and haven't been able to put it down. I highly recommend it to anyone with a twisted sense of humor or just anyone who loves songs about beheadings, fallen angels, lost loves, or (dare I say it) infatuations with dead girls.. Give it a try, you'll thank me in the long run.
